Abstract
The library is the only social institution whose main ethical underpinning is the collection, preservation, and dissemination of all manner of information. This, at any rate, is the library's avowed goal. It rarely becomes a reality, and for good and sundry reasons: budget constraints, space limitations, personnel shortages. The danger is not so much that the library often falls short of its heady and laudable goal, but that librarians are sometimes seized by an almost pathological smugness. In short, they come to believe that the goal is actually being realized.

Abstract
Since the passage of the Smith‐Hughes Act of 1917, which established vocational‐technical education, more than 17,000,000 students annually are served by some type of vocational school program. In spite of this impressive figure, vocational schools are still considered by many people as a place to send students who are “good with their hands” and who are less academically inclined than their counterparts in comprehensive schools. Yet, the simple hands‐on training experiences, so commonly employed as the main method of instruction, no longer assure that one will have the necessary knowledge to be a competent and employable tradesperson or technician. With advances in technology in all areas (e.g., automotive mechanics, data processing, printing, electronics, aviation, agriculture, etc.), it is now necessary for students in vocational schools to study the related technical sciences and mathematics and the continuing technical developments in an area in order to gain employment. With these advances in technology there has been a large growth in the literature, but no one up to this time has examined collection development.

If ethical or legal mandates have failed to compel organizations to manage diversity in meaningful ways, competition has emerged as the new impetus to do so. A recent cover story in Nation's Business by Sharon Nelton, “Winning with Diversity,” outlines successful business experiences with a diverse workforce that responds more effectively to developments in the marketplace. Nelton reports that a 1992 survey of 578 companies indicated that over one‐third of the organizations polled felt that employees with multicultural communication skills were necessary for doing business in other nations and communicating with a diverse workforce.

Abstract
Provides an historical perspective for the fight for diversity in US libraries, defining diversity, describing the changing demographics and discussing problems of implementing diversity. The lack of diversity in middle management posts in the US Government is noted. Work within the American Library Association, including recruiting initiatives and the Spectrum Initiative, a Diversity Fair, the establishment of a Presidential Committee on Library Service to Minorities are described. Concludes with examples of services provided by public libraries and considers prospects for the future.

Design/methodology/approach
The paper introduces and annotates periodical articles, monographs, and audiovisual material examining library instruction and information literacy.
Findings
The findings provide information about each source, discusses the characteristics of current scholarship, and describes sources that contain unique scholarly contributions and quality reproductions.
Originality/value
The information may be used by librarians and interested parties as a quick reference to literature on library instruction and information literacy.

Presents an overview of recent empirical research findings and a brief description of the theoretical rationale of the research. Looks at the 2000 Employment Research Unit Annual Conference held at the University of Cardiff in Wales on 6/7 September 2000. Spotlights the 76 or so presentations within and shows that these are in many, differing, areas across management research from: retail finance; precarious jobs and decisions; methodological lessons from feminism; call centre experience and disability discrimination. These and all points east and west are covered and laid out in a simple, abstract style, including, where applicable, references, endnotes and bibliography in an easy‐to‐follow manner. Summarizes each paper and also gives conclusions where needed, in a comfortable modern format.
