Abstract

The challenge presented by advanced package development in the past five years has further accentuated the constant need for package quality and reliability monitoring through extensive laboratory testing and evaluation. As pin counts and chip geometries have continued to increase, there has been additional pressure from the military and commercial sectors to improve interconnect designs for packaged chips, including chips directly attached to the printed wiring board (PWB). One of the options employed has been tape automated bonding (TAB). However, this assembly technique also presents new standardisation, qualification and reliability problems. Therefore, at Rome Air Development Center (RADC), there is regular assessment (through in‐house failure analysis studies) of parts destined for military and space systems. In addition, Department of Defense (DoD) high tech development programmes, such as very high speed integrated circuits (VHSIC), have utilised all present screening methods for package evaluation, and have addressed the need for development of more definitive non‐destructive tests. To answer this need, two RADC contractual efforts were awarded on laser thermal and ultrasonic inspection techniques. Through these package evaluations, a number of potential reliability problems are identified and the results provided to the specific contractors for corrective action implementation. Typical problems uncovered are lid material and pin corrosion, damage to external components and adhesion problems between copper leads and polyimide supports, hermeticity failures, high moisture content in sealed packages and particle impact noise detection (PIND) test failures (internal particles). Further tests uncover bond strength failures, bond placement irregularities, voids in die attach material (potential heat dissipation problems), and die surface defects such as scratches and cracks. This presentation will review the specific package level physical test methods that are employed as a means of evaluating reliable package performance. Many of the tests, especially the environmental tests—e.g., salt atmosphere and moisture resistance—provide accelerated forms of anticipated conditions and are therefore applied as destructive tests to assess package quality and reliability in field use. In addition to a manufacturer's compliance with designated qualification procedures, the key to package quality lies in utilising good materials and well‐controlled assembly techniques. This practice, along with effective package screen tests, will ensure reliable operation of very large scale integration (VLSI) devices in severe military and commercial environment applications.

Abstract

This paper explores the political and legal issues contained in the law and jurisprudence surrounding missing American service personnel. It argues that the Missing Service Personnel Act of 1995 is an effect of the legacy of the Vietnam War rather than a response to a particular legal problem. The essay further contends that we should be suspicious of the effort to transform the balance sheet of war into a justiciable legal question, primarily because the requirement to produce a body fails to disarm the representational economy in which the absent body constitutes a continuation of Vietnam War hostilities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to categorize industrial clusters, and then compare three industrial clusters of three countries from the perspectives of hard environment, soft environment, factors from supply and demand sides, and the network mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected through interview with cluster coordinators. Qualitative case studies were conducted.

Findings

The center of excellence behaves well in nearly all aspects, while the spatially narrowly distributed specific center of innovation mainly exploits benefits from its concentrated sector. For the Chinese comprehensive technology incubator, relatively limited geographical space and broad sectorial distribution endow it with unclear strengths, implying the inadequacy of interconnectedness and industry relatedness mentioned by Porter.

Research limitations/implications

Data were collected mainly from cluster coordinators, implying further data collecting and more comprehensive analysis.

Practical implications

It only makes sense to compare industrial clusters that are comparable with each other. Elements must be matched to facilitate the network interactions, and hence the innovation performance of clusters.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the theoretical basis through it analyzing and clarifying the scales to measure industrial clusters, and answers the question: what is the situation of industrial clusters behaving in several aspects including hard environment, soft environment, supply, demand, network interactions and innovation performance?

Abstract

Our paper discusses the need for continued focus on ethical leadership and the importance and benefits of ethical leadership development. We propose integrating ethical leadership development, that uses cognitive development theory, into the Center for Creative Leadership’s Assess, Challenge, and Support (ACS) leader development model to help address the continued failures of ethical leader development. Our extended framework includes values and morals as a component of the model, and ethical organizational culture as its backdrop, thereby incorporating an examination of ethical leadership into each component of the ACS model. We conclude with practical implications and suggestions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of extended reality (XR) to create memorable experiences has attracted considerable attention, especially in tourism. Multisensory XR offers a new way of virtually previewing a destination before physical holidays. This study aims to explore how multisensory XR can be used at each stage of the tourism experience journey. This study established a model for how destination-image formation is affected by multisensory XR in each phase of tourism experience.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors followed the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines to review studies published between 2013 and 2020, gathered from four research databases. The authors identified the predominant XR technology and sensory stimuli based on the characteristics of various tourism domains. The authors synthesized the previous studies to explain destination-image formation by using multisensory XR.

Findings

This study summarized the XR study distribution among the three stages of the tourism experience journey. The authors identified the predominant sensory stimuli and dominant XR application and developed a destination-image formation model by using multisensory XR.

Originality/value

This study highlights the holistic approach of multisensory XR in the tourism experience journey in relation to various tourism domains. It also contributes to destination-image formation in the virtual environment by providing multisensory experiences of predominant sensory stimuli at each stage.

研究目的

运用扩展现实(XR)来创造令人印象深刻的体验在旅游领域得到了瞩目。多感官XR提供了用虚拟方式预览景区的新途径。本研究探讨了多感官XR是怎样在旅游体验的各个阶段进行运用。我们建立了一个关于目的地形象行程是怎样收到多感知XR在每一个旅游体验阶段影响模型。

方法

本研究遵循了系统评价的首选的报告项目对由四份数据库综合提取的2013 到2020 年间发表的文章用系统文献综述和荟萃分析方法进行了梳理。基于不同旅游领域我们发现了首要的XR技术和感官刺激因素。本研究综合了之前文章用多感官XR来解释目的地形象的产生的文章。

研究结果

我们总结了XR 基于旅游体验三个阶段的研究的分布. 我们确定了主导的感官刺激因素和主导的XR应用技术并且用多元感知XR研发了目的地形象形成的模型。

研究原创性/价值

本研究突出了多元感官XR在旅游体验跨越多层旅游领域的整体性方式。本研究并且通过提供每阶段的主打感官刺激元素在多感官体验过程中对虚拟环境下的目的地形象产生做出了贡献。

Abstract

Purpose

The deployment of assistive technologies affects well-being and productivity at industrial workplaces. Augmented reality (AR) is one of these technologies that has become increasingly deployed in manufacturing facilities to assist employees on the shopfloor. This paper aims to shed light on users’ experiences with AR-based assistance systems, specifically on the sense of autonomy users experience during an AR-assisted assembly task. Based on that, this paper draws implications for the design of future industrial workplaces to improve workers’ health, well-being and productivity.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors conducted a laboratory experiment with 117 participants. Within semi-structured interviews, the authors asked the participants about their general experience, as well as their sense of autonomy and responsibility.

Findings

The study results indicate a limited perception of autonomy. Connected to this, the participants took over a passive working attitude and experienced a limited sense of responsibility concerning the output of the AR-assisted assembly task. At the same time, however, the participants still attributed assembly errors internally.

Originality/value

AR-assistance holds both benefits and risks for worker’s health, well-being and productivity. With this study, the author aims to increase the understanding about the perception of autonomy and control at industrial workplaces. Thus, the authors conclude with design implications for developing and implementing assistive technologies in a way that beneficial effects for employees can be achieved.
