Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to analyze the effects of the components of absorptive capacity (ACAP) – potential absorptive capacity (PACAP) and realized absorptive capacity (RACAP) on inbound and outbound open innovation (OI). In addition, this study investigates the moderating role that knowledge-oriented leadership (KOL) plays in the relationship between ACAP and OI.
Design/methodology/approach
This research adopts a quantitative approach, using structural equation modeling, in a sample of 218 companies in the Brazilian manufacturing sector, using a random sampling technique and self-administered questionnaire.
Findings
The results indicate that while PACAP positively influences inbound and outbound OI, RACAP has a significant relationship only with outbound OI. In addition, KOL moderates the significant relationships between PACAP and RACAP and OI, indicating that the development of a leadership that fosters learning and interaction between employees and sectors of the organization impacts the innovation results of companies in the manufacturing sector.
Practical implications
This study also shows that managers must have an active role in the construction of an organizational context that supports learning through initiatives that encourage the process of trial and error, teamwork and cooperation between employees.
Originality/value
This research advances previous studies by relating the two components of ACAP (PACAP and RACAP) with the two OI models (inbound and outbound), in addition to analyzing the moderating role that KOL plays in this relationship between ACAP and OI.

Abstract
Purpose
Peer-to-peer accommodation (P2PA) has witnessed remarkable growth across the globe recently. However, acceptance of P2PA among residents in developing economies is still fraught with several challenges. The paper aims to extend the constraint–negotiation framework to examine the motivations, perceived constraints, negotiation strategies and the role of learned helplessness of local residents to host tourists.
Design/methodology/approach
The data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire by using cluster random sampling technique. In total, 454 usable questionnaires were collected through on-site research. The structural model was tested by using survey data by applying PLS-SEM 4.0.
Findings
The results suggest that while perceived constraints can inhibit residents from hosting, negotiation strategies can reduce helplessness and encourage residents to host tourists.
Practical implications
Theoretically, this study advances P2PA literature by integrating learned helplessness in the constraint–negotiation framework and it offers insights for the P2PA providers as well as policymakers.
Originality/value
This is a pioneering study to examine the role of learned helplessness using constraint–negotiation framework in the context of P2PA, thus paving the way to advance P2PA-related research from the residents’ perspective.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing from the literature on internationalization, higher education marketing and place branding, this paper aims to link the internationalization of higher education to country branding. It explores the impact of internationalization within the higher education system on Egypt’s destination brand equity. This investigation offers insights for decision-makers in both the higher education and country branding sectors.
Design/methodology/approach
This empirical paper adopts an exploratory approach and serves as an initial step for researchers. It utilizes a quantitative methodology, employing a survey with 366 responses, to examine the effects of internationalization efforts in higher education on country brand equity.
Findings
The results reveal a direct correlation between student engagement and the brand equity of international branch campuses (IBCs), as well as a link between IBCs and Egypt’s brand equity. Notably, the study highlights the mediating role of IBC brand equity in the relationship between student engagement and the overall brand equity of Egypt.
Originality/value
This paper is innovative in its method of assessing the impact of internationalization efforts in higher education, specifically at IBCs in Egypt, on Egypt’s destination brand equity. Additionally, the study identifies student engagement as an antecedent to IBC brand equity.

Purpose
By using a wide range of macro and micro factors, this paper aims to provide a new assessment of the recent literature on inbound tourism demand models.
Design/methodology/approach
This study examines the determinants and spatial effects of inbound tourism using Hausman–Taylor and spatial econometric models.
Findings
Several important factors were identified, including local economic growth, openness to the outside world, regional size, geographic distance, foreign direct investment, level of innovation and average annual temperature. In addition, the study found strong cross-city competition effects on tourism resource endowment and hotel infrastructure.
Originality/value
Inbound tourism is a crucial link in achieving high-quality economic development. However, previous studies have mainly focused on the analysis of single influencing factors, ignoring the spatial spillover effects of factors.
