Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine if companies in the modular and offsite construction (MOC) industry are agile or not and its level of application for agility principles, which allows for quick responses to the increasingly dynamic nature of industry environments.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes an agility assessment framework for MOC that uses 48 assessment attributes organized into four categories: metrics, drivers, enablers and capabilities. A questionnaire approach was used to disseminate the framework globally in 19 countries and synthesize its relevance to the MOC industry. The questionnaire had 55 complete responses, majority of respondents work in managerial positions for MOC manufacturing facilities and onsite general contractors.

Findings

It was found that the lowest metric score for adapting to change was for cost since controlling cost would be difficult for any changes required after the design freeze stage. The top agility driver was found to be the need to respond to the wide variety of customer expectations, while the lowest driver was the existence of competing priorities. The top agility enabler was vendor partnership, which can be related to current postpandemic supply chain disruptions. Regarding technological capabilities, Europe and the USA acquired better scores compared to Asia, Latin America and Africa.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the MOC body of knowledge by creating an agility assessment tool for MOC firms to analyze their agile approach and environment, identifying the preliminary importance of agility assessment attributes and determining significant agile differences between the main MOC industry groups.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the impact of personal, organisational and innovation capability on technological innovation and further impacts on small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs') performance during uncertainty. Moreover, the moderator role of social sustainability orientation on the relationships of technological innovation, innovation performance and organisational resilience is also examined.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative approach using 524 SME responses and Smart PLS 4.0 are adopted in this research.

Findings

The results indicate a correlation between three types of capabilities with technological innovation and further conversion to organisational resilience. Additionally, social sustainability shows a negative moderating effect between innovation performance and organisational resilience. The research findings advanced the resources-based-view (RBV) by proposing three capability dimensions as platforms for SMEs' innovation success, which later generate resilience possibilities. Specifically highlighted in this study are the personal capabilities of managers, organisational capabilities and innovation capabilities in setting business objectives and resource allocation towards economic and sustainable goals during turbulence and uncertainty.

Originality/value

This study investigates the role of technological innovation and innovation on SME resilience. Notably, we deploy the social sustainability orientation as moderators towards the relationship between technological innovation, innovation performance and SMEs’ resilience. SMEs employing social sustainability orientation might negatively inhibit the translation from innovation performance to SME resilience, providing novel insights into navigating uncertainty in modern business. It has no effect on the relationship between technological innovation and its consequences.

Abstract

Purpose

This study employed technological frames of reference (TFR) theory to explore officer attitudes toward body-worn cameras (BWCs) in the Chicago Police Department (CPD), identifying frames that may undermine compliance.

Design/methodology/approach

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 officers, focusing on their perceptions of the BWCs’ purpose, adoption catalysts, effectiveness metrics and benefits and drawbacks.

Findings

Officers viewed BWCs primarily as tools for oversight and cited external influences and the department’s desire to be perceived as progressive as key catalysts for BWC adoption. There was widespread uncertainty regarding the criteria CPD uses to gauge BWC effectiveness. The protective feature of the cameras was cited as the primary benefit of the technology, while privacy intrusion and discretion were identified as key drawbacks. Noteworthy nuances were observed across these perceptual domains.

Research limitations/implications

The study focuses on a single police agency, limiting its generalizability. Nevertheless, it holds value for departments experiencing BWC policy compliance issues and those preparing to implement the cameras.

Practical implications

Insights into officers’ technological frames help identify perspectives that threaten desired use of BWCs and highlight necessary training and policy interventions that align officers' BWC readings with departmental goals to enhance policy compliance.

Originality/value

This study is among the few that employ TFR theory to examine officer perceptions of BWCs in a large urban police agency.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the factors that lead to the failure of some rewards to induce knowledge sharing behavior among employees, with much focus on employees’ attitudes and leadership’s knowledge of employees’ preferences, and presents a model that depicts the linkages.

Design/methodology/approach

To investigate why the provision of some rewards fails to induce knowledge sharing behavior among employees, this study uses the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses framework to identify and analyze 56 articles published from 2000 to 2021.

Findings

Knowledge sharing is positively linked to organizational performance. Further, employees’ negative attitudes toward a reward system negatively relate to knowledge sharing behavior. Furthermore, management’s lack of knowledge of employees’ preferences regarding rewards leads to the provision of incorrect rewards that do not enhance knowledge sharing behavior. Finally, a conceptual model depicting the linkages among the variables under consideration has been presented.

Research limitations/implications

Through the present study, employees’ attitudes toward rewards and leadership’s knowledge of employees’ preferences have been presented as critical factors that can lead to the failure of some rewards to induce knowledge sharing behavior. Further, the conceptual framework that can guide managers and leaders in strategizing on how best to develop and implement correct reward systems has been presented.

Originality/value

The present study is a significant contribution to the literature by focusing on the negative side of rewards toward knowledge sharing behavior with a focus on employees’ attitudes and leadership’s awareness of employees’ preferences regarding rewards.

Abstract

Purpose

Despite the growing literature on business model innovation (BMI) and its implications for firm performance, the research on the antecedents of BMI is still at a budding stage. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to bridge this gap by examining the causal relationships between knowledge management, BMI, competitive advantage, and firm performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A purposive sample of 300 micro, small, and medium enterprises was collected with more than 500 employees and total revenue between 50 and 500 million Indian Rupees, according to the Development Act, 2005. The collected data were analyzed using structural equation modeling through smart PLS 3.

Findings

The study’s findings show that knowledge management significantly influences BMI. This study also highlights the synergic impact of Knowledge management and BMI on firm performance. Furthermore, findings highlight the mediating role of competitive advantage in the relationship between knowledge management, BMI, and firm performance.

Practical implications

Understanding the impact of BMI and knowledge management is crucial for business owners, managers, and other stakeholders to plan for the continuous improvement of their businesses. Managers can secure a favorable position in the competitive market and improve organizational performance by paying attention to effectively managing their knowledge resources.

Originality/value

The study is one of the first few empirical efforts to investigate the causal relationships between knowledge management, BMI and firm performance. The study adds to the scant literature in this area by highlighting the mediating role of competitive advantage.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the growing interest in the topic of knowledge management (KM) in family firms (FFs) and the subsequent increasing number of papers published, this study aims to review the field to identify and analyze the main themes and trends.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies bibliometric techniques to a sample of 146 papers published from 2007 to 2023 and their 8,126 unique cited references. Bibliometric coupling is performed on the sample papers to explore the current intellectual structure of the field of KM in FFs, whereas cocitations analysis is performed to investigate the different literature streams that served as roots for the development of such a field.

Findings

Bibliographic coupling reveals that sample papers can be grouped into four clusters, and, through papers content analysis, the author identifies their core themes as knowledge sharing, innovation, knowledge-based dynamic capabilities and intellectual capital. Cocitation analysis of the cited references revealed four main clusters that can be considered the literature streams that served as roots for the development of the field, i.e. knowledge-based view, socioemotional wealth, strategic management and social capital (as a theory and as a resource).

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on KM in FFs by extending prior systematic review efforts with bibliometric analyses and combining these results to highlight connections between the main research themes around which scholars have debated (i.e. the clusters identified through bibliometric coupling) and their theoretical foundations (i.e. the clusters identified through cocitation analysis). This study also has practical implications by synthesizing and informing managers about FFs’ advantages and weaknesses in the KM process.

Abstract

Purpose

Firms in emerging economies are generally at a disadvantage in terms of resources, which may limit their digital transformation. The Chinese government has designed and promulgated a series of wind power policies from the perspectives of support and regulation. The former provides scarce resources for enterprises and thus alleviating financial constraints. While the latter increases the demands for advanced technologies, thereby triggering resource bricolages. This study aims to clarify the impact of industrial policy on the digital transformation of the Chinese wind power industry, and the role of financing constraint and resource bricolage in the above relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the data of listed companies in the Chinese wind power industry from 2006 to 2021, this study clarifies the impact and mechanism of industrial policy on firm digital transformation with fixed effect regression models.

Findings

Empirical results indicate that both supportive and regulatory policies are the cornerstone of the digital transformation of the Chinese wind power industry. Financial constraint and resource bricolage, respectively, mediate the impact of supportive and regulatory policies. However, the mix of supportive and regulatory policies inhibits digital transformation. Moreover, industrial policies are more effective for the digital transformation of state-owned enterprises, as well as enterprises in economically underdeveloped regions.

Research limitations/implications

This study investigates the path of government intervention driving firm digital transformation from the resource-related perspective (i.e. financial constraint and resource bricolage), and its analytical framework can be extended based on other theories. The combined effects of cross-sectoral policies (e.g. wind power policy and digital infrastructure policy) can be further assessed. The marginal net benefit of government intervention can be calculated to determine whether it is worthwhile.

Practical implications

This study emphasizes the necessity of government intervention in the digital transformation of enterprises in emerging economies. The governments should align the policy targets, clarify policy recipients and modify policy process of different categories of industrial policies to optimize the effectiveness of policy mix. Given that the effectiveness of government intervention varies among different categories of enterprises, the competent agencies should design and promulgate differentiated industrial policies based on the heterogeneity of firms to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of industrial policies.

Originality/value

This is one of the earliest explorations of industrial policies’ effect on the digital transformation of the renewable energy sector in emerging economies, providing new evidence for institutional theory. Meanwhile, this study introduces financial constraint and resource bricolage into the research framework and attempts to uncover the mechanism of industrial policy driving the digital transformation of enterprises in emerging economies. Besides, to expand the understanding of the complex industrial policy system, this study assesses the effectiveness of the industrial policy mix.

Purpose

Digital technologies open up unprecedented opportunities for the Chinese wind power industry to make rapid and comprehensive decisions. However, the relationship between digital technology adoption and radical and incremental innovations has not been empirically assessed. In addition, reconfiguration capability is the ability of firms to transform and respond to changes. How such an organizational capability influences the effectiveness of digital technology adoption is a black box. In response, this study aims to assess the relationship between digital technology adoption and radical and incremental innovations in the Chinese wind power industry and elucidate the moderating role of reconfiguration capability.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the data of listed companies in the Chinese wind power industry from 2006 to 2020, this study constructs regression models and validates the hypotheses.

Findings

The correlation between digital technology adoption and incremental innovation in the wind power industry in China is significantly positive, but the relationship between digital technology adoption and radical innovation is not significant. In addition, reconfiguration capability significantly enhances the incentive effect of digital technology adoption on incremental innovation.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the earliest to explore the heterogeneous relationships between digital technology adoption and radical and incremental innovations in emerging economies, advancing the theoretical insights into how digital transformation can foster different categories of technological innovations. Moreover, this study embeds dynamic capability theory into digital transformation research by exploring the boundary conditions for the effectiveness of digital technology adoption from the perspective of organizational dynamic capability, thereby expanding the boundaries of existing knowledge.
