Abstract

Adsorption parameters (e.g. Langmuir constant, mass transfer coefficient and Thomas rate constant) are involved in the design of aqueous-media adsorption treatment units. However, the classic approach to estimating such parameters is perceived to be imprecise. Herein, the essential features and performances of the ant colony, bee colony and elephant herd optimisation approaches are introduced to the experimental chemist and chemical engineer engaged in adsorption research for aqueous systems. Key research and development directions, believed to harness these algorithms for real-scale water treatment (which falls within the wide-ranging coverage of the Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) ‘Clean Water and Sanitation for All’), are also proposed. The ant colony, bee colony and elephant herd optimisations have higher precision and accuracy, and are particularly efficient in finding the global optimum solution. It is hoped that the discussions can stimulate both the experimental chemist and chemical engineer to delineate the progress achieved so far and collaborate further to devise strategies for integrating these intelligent optimisations in the design and operation of real multicomponent multi-complexity adsorption systems for water purification.

Nowadays, the increase in the capacity of batteries has laid the foundations for a broader diffusion of electric mobility. However, electric mobility is causing a growing electricity demand as well as the need to increase the diffusion of suitable charging stations. Within these last challenges, drawing on the recent literature, this chapter provides a critical and wide-ranging review of papers dealing with the formulation of the problem of the localisation of electric vehicle (EV) charging points. This problem is approached considering the electric charging infrastructure technologies, localisation criteria and related methodologies. This review shows how the ‘electric mobility revolution’ applies the technological innovations provided by the energy supply systems, and the location of these systems within the urban contexts. Since the technological innovations have different options, achieving an international standard of charging systems is still far away. Moreover, as there are several criteria, parameters and methodologies, and some analytical approaches for the localisation of electric vehicle charging points, the formulation of the ‘localisation’ problem should require the application of multi-criteria analysis to be addressed. Finally, the results show that there is no consensus on technologies, criteria, and methodologies to be adopted. Therefore, this wide-ranging analysis of the literature would be useful to support possible benchmarking and systematisation accordingly.

Estimating parameters of constrained optimization models in a consistent way requires a different set of methods than what is available in a typical econometric toolkit. We identify three complications likely to arise in this context, and suggest solutions to those complications: (i) the bi-level programming character, (ii) ill-posedness, and (iii) derivation of estimator properties. The solutions suggested involve a combination of numerical techniques and utilization of out-of-sample information through Bayesian techniques. The proposed framework is also suitable for typical empirical problems arising in trade analysis such as the estimation of trade equilibrium models and data balancing exercises.

This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.

The increasing awareness of the importance of the wider objectives of traffic management and control has led to the work described in this paper. The aim of the study is to develop a flexible signal controller which may be configured so that it embodies the objectives appropriate for the situation in which it is to be used. This paper describes the optimisation of a prototype fuzzy logic signal controller with respect to several criteria simultaneously. Having demonstrated the controller's sensitivity to changes in its parameters, a multiobjective genetic algorithm (MOGA) optimisation technique is used to derive a family of solutions, each of which is optimal with respect to at least one of the criteria, whilst minimising the trade-off with respect to the other criteria.

Abstract

This chapter presents the portfolio optimization problem formulated as a multi-criteria mixed integer program. Weighting and lexicographic approach are proposed. The portfolio selection problem considered is based on a single-period model of investment. An extension of the Markowitz portfolio optimization model is considered, in which the variance has been replaced with the Value-at-Risk (VaR). The VaR is a quantile of the return distribution function. In the classical Markowitz approach, future returns are random variables controlled by such parameters as the portfolio efficiency, which is measured by the expectation, whereas risk is calculated by the standard deviation. As a result, the classical problem is formulated as a quadratic program with continuous variables and some side constraints. The objective of the problem considered in this chapter is to allocate wealth on different securities to maximize the weighted difference of the portfolio expected return and the threshold of the probability that the return is less than a required level. The auxiliary objectives are minimization of risk probability of portfolio loss and minimization of the number of security types in portfolio. The four types of decision variables are introduced in the model: a continuous wealth allocation variable that represents the percentage of wealth allocated to each asset, a continuous variable that prevents the probability that return of investment is not less than required level, a binary selection variable that prevents the choice of portfolios whose VaR is below the minimized threshold, and a binary selection variable that represents choice of stocks in which capital should be invested. The results of some computational experiments with the mixed integer programming approach modeled on a real data from the Warsaw Stock Exchange are reported.

Abstract

Rainfall–runoff relationship is one of the most complex hydrological phenomena. A conventional neural network (NN) with backpropagation algorithm has successfully modelled various non-linear hydrological processes in recent years. However, the convergence rate of the backpropagation NN is relatively slow, and solutions may trap at local minima. Therefore, a new metaheuristic algorithm named as cuckoo search optimisation was proposed to combine with the NN to model the daily rainfall–runoff relationship at Sungai Bedup Basin, Sarawak, Malaysia. Two-year rainfall–runoff data from 1997 to 1998 had been used for model training, while one-year data in 1999 was used for model validation. Input data used are current rainfall, antecedent rainfall and antecedent runoff, while the targeted output is current runoff. This novel NN model is evaluated with the coefficient of correlation (R) and the Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient (E2). Results show that cuckoo search optimisation neural network (CSONN) is able to yield R and E2 to 0.99 and 0.94, respectively, for model validation with the optimal configuration of number of nests (n) = 20, initial discovery rate of alien eggs (painitial) = 0.6, hidden neuron (HN) = 100, iteration number (IN) = 1,000 and learning rate (LR) = 1 for CSONND4 model. The results revealed that the newly developed CSONN is able to simulate runoff accurately using only precipitation and runoff data.

Abstract

Traditional epidemic models, like the classical SIR, are fitted to real data using deterministic optimization techniques. As a consequence, their performances cannot be properly assessed and, more importantly, the estimates of the critical epidemic parameters (which are of dramatic importance in monitoring the epidemic evolution) cannot be complemented with the calculation of confidence intervals. The aim of the present work is to remove such limitations and to compare the results obtained using two stochastic versions of deterministic SIR models. We describe the two alternatives and the associated estimation procedures, and we apply the two methodologies to a set of COVID-19 data observed in Italy in the 2020 pandemic wave. Our estimates of the basic reproduction number are comparable with the official sources, but using our methods uncertainty can also be properly assessed.
