Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the psychological mediating mechanisms through which omnichannel integration affects customer word-of-mouth (WOM) behaviors in omnichannel retailing.

Design/methodology/approach

Guided by prior omnichannel retailing studies, the authors identify taxonomy of customer WOM behaviors with three archetypes, namely, face-to-face WOM, online store WOM, and social media WOM. Then, the authors draw on social exchange theory (SET) to explain how omnichannel integration influences customer WOM behaviors through the mediating roles of perceived personal preference fit and perceived social relatedness. The authors empirically tested the model using structural equation modeling and multiple mediation analysis with a field survey of 335 omnichannel customers.

Findings

Perceived personal preference fit positively influences face-to-face WOM and social media WOM, whereas perceived social relatedness is positively associated with face-to-face WOM, online store WOM, and social media WOM. Furthermore, transactional integration and relational integration positively affect perceived personal preference fit, whereas relational integration has a positive effect on perceived social relatedness. Finally, perceived personal preference fit mediates the effects of transactional integration and relational integration on face-to-face WOM and social media WOM. Perceived social relatedness mediates the effects of relational integration on face-to-face WOM, online store WOM, and social media WOM.

Originality/value

The authors' study advances the omnichannel retailing literature by proposing a taxonomy of customer WOM behaviors in omnichannel retailing and identifying the mediating mechanisms through which omnichannel integration influences customer WOM behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

This study employed the commitment–trust theory in social psychology and relationship marketing to explore female customers' perception of channel integration quality in omnichannel retailing and its influence on their relationship commitment to and trust in the relationship with retailers, and thus on their stickiness. Channel integration quality consists of two dimensions: channel service configuration (channel choice breadth and channel service transparency) and integrated interactions (content consistency, process consistency and perceived fluency).

Design/methodology/approach

The study was carried out via a questionnaire survey, to which 868 valid responses were collected. The partial least squares technique was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

Channel service transparency and perceived fluency influence relationship commitment; content consistency, process consistency and perceived fluency all have significant effects on trust. Interestingly, although less influential than integrated interactions, channel service configuration is the foundation of channel integration quality, testifying to its significant role.

Originality/value

This study provides strong evidence on how channel integration quality affects customer stickiness. Moreover, this study replicates the finding of significant relationships among relationship commitment, trust and stickiness in omnichannel retailing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review the extant research literature on omnichannel retailing and map the research trends in this field through a bibliometric analysis and network visualization exercise.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper employs bibliometric analysis techniques on research literature retrieved from the Scopus and Web of Science databases over the period 2013–2020 and assesses indicators such as research production and citation trends, top contributing authors, countries, journals and organizations through tools offered by the Scopus/Web of Science databases as well as Biblioshiny. A network visualization analysis of patterns such as keyword co-occurrences and co-authorship linkages between contributing countries has been investigated through the use of VOSviewer.

Findings

The bibliometric analysis indicates that research in this field is currently dominated by USA and China with Germany and UK also being key contributors. The analysis has indicated that the field of omnichannel retailing straddles multiple domains such as logistics, distribution, operations and consumer behavior, thereby offering significant future scope for research linking omnichannel retailing with these subject areas.

Originality/value

This study maps the structure of research done in the field of omnichannel retailing and outlines the key contributors in terms of authors, journals and organizations that can serve as an input for future research. The study also identifies possible avenues for future research in the knowledge domain of omnichannel retailing.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates factors in consumer trust and purchase intention through omnichannel retailing. The theoretical framework is an extended theory of planned behaviour (TPB) model, with additional factors including time-saving and trust as explanatory variables.

Design/methodology/approach

The study drew on a sample of Thai consumers aged 18 and over (n = 408), with data collected through an online survey. Analysis was based on a structural equation modelling (SEM) approach, employing confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

The analysis showed that attitudes towards omnichannel retailing had the strongest effect on purchase intention, followed by subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and information search. All variables except attitudes to omnichannel retailing had moderate effect sizes. Analysis also showed that attitudes towards omnichannel retailing had a significant (though only moderately strong) effect on consumer trust towards omnichannel retailing. Subjective norms, perceived behavioural control and time-saving also had significant effects on consumer trust, although these effects were all weaker than the effect of attitudes. Finally, time-saving had a significant and strong effect on perceived behavioural control.

Originality/value

These findings show that both personal attitudes towards omnichannel retailing and technology characteristics can influence user acceptance. Its practical implication is that retailers need to consider the psychological needs and attitudes of their customers before implementing omnichannel tools. Theoretically, there is a need for more empirical research into the consumer decision for omnichannel retailing. This is particularly true since omnichannel retailing is a relatively new retail strategy which consumers may not yet fully understand.

There have been significant developments in the field of retailing with digitalization. One of these developments is the emergence of omnichannel retailing. Although this has affected both firms and consumers considerably, the literature is dominated by the studies dealing with omnichannel retailing from the firms’ perspectives. The studies dealing with omnichannel retailing from the consumers’ perspectives have recently begun to attract the attention of researchers. For this reason, this study conducted a literature review to examine various consumer behaviors mentioned in the studies aimed at explaining consumer behaviors in the omnichannel retailing context. The distribution of these studies according to years and journals, research methods used, theories adopted, and the related five-stage consumer decision-making stages are summarized. Additionally, this review addresses future research avenues.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to identify and analyse complex interrelationships among factors influencing omnichannel retailing adoption in Indian apparel firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The study applies an integrated interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) approach for understanding the hierarchical and contextual relationship structure among the factors influencing omnichannel retailing adoption.

Findings

The integrated ISM–DEMATEL approach identifies that financial commitment is the most crucial factors followed by technological capability, training and development, performance metrics, supportive organisational structure, collaboration and knowledge sharing, offline–online information aggregation and integrated technological platform. Also, the study reveals that financial commitment and supportive organisational structure impact the majority of factors but are affected by only a few factors.

Research limitations/implications

Unlike previous studies, this study suggests an alternate approach to theory building emerging from the various factors that could be considered while developing omnichannel retailing.

Practical implications

Practitioners should pay close attention to leading factors that influence the adoption of omnichannel retailing, namely, financial commitments, supportive organisational structure, technological capability, integrated technological platform and training and development rather than focusing on significant receivers, such as warehouse management and assortment management.

Originality/value

The integrated approach of ISM-DEMATEL offers a hierarchical model and cause–effect relationship among factors influencing omnichannel retailing adoption.

Purpose

This study aims to integrate brand and retailer levels variables to examine the direct and indirect relationships between omnichannel retailing and consumer engagement.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data are collected from a sample consumers of different omnichannel retailing brands operating in the skin care industry. Partial least squares structural equation modeling is utilized.

Findings

The study finds brand channels' integrated interactions (process and content consistency) to increase consumer brand engagement. Findings show retailer consumer empowerment to intensify the impact of omnichannel retailing on consumer engagement. Results also show brand channels' integrated interactions to increase consumer brand familiarity, which mediates the effect of omnichannel retailing on consumer engagement.

Originality/value

This study suggests that integrating brand- and retailer-level variables is vital to understand the effect of omnichannel retailing on consumer engagement. The study concludes that for successful omnichannel strategy, collaboration between brands and retailers is imperative.

Abstract

Purpose

Omnichannel retailing emphasises the interplay between channels to provide seamless customer experiences across shopping journeys but is challenging for retailers to implement. This research explores the necessary actions and dynamic capabilities needed of retailers to create, extend and modify the organisational resource base required for realising omnichannel retailing.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative exploratory design with in-depth interviews of Generation Z customers and retail firms was used to provide insights into the dynamic capabilities necessary for obtaining omnichannel retailing.

Findings

This research elaborates on the dynamic capabilities needed for omnichannel solutions related to (1) the underlying technology (i.e. develop an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system and online store), (2) customer experience optimisation (i.e. develop product delivery, return routines, supply chain management, curated exhibitions, showrooms and pop-up stores), (3) internal and external collaboration (i.e. collaborate across business units, strengthening the core leadership team and collaborate and align with service ecosystem partners and (4) overall omnichannel functionality (i.e. establish a customer-oriented retail culture, and integrate marketing communication and customisation through data exploration).

Originality/value

This research enriches the retailing literature on omnichannel solutions and responds to the need for theoretical anchoring by applying the dynamic capability perspective to address actions useful for realising omnichannel retailing.

Abstract

Purpose

This study explores the present state of research related to omnichannel retail, investigates retail's different sub-areas and suggests future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

The subdomains of omnichannel retail have been identified using a keyword co-occurrence network (KCN) map and content analysis. The 5W1H method assisted in finding the bibliographies of 258 SCOPUS-indexed and ABDC-ranked journal articles and showcasing the omnichannel retail landscape.

Findings

Most research on omnichannel retail is concentrated on five subdomains: customer behaviour, channel integration, technological innovation, supply chain and operations and strategy. The study's conceptual framework illustrates the omnichannel retailing environment and the variables that must be considered whilst establishing an omnichannel strategic vision. Besides, future researchers have been urged to concentrate on interdisciplinary research, as a seamless experience is unachievable if focussed on a single subdomain.

Research limitations/implications

There is a slight probability of missing out on some good articles as this study considered only those articles that have been published in SCOPUS and ranked by the ABDC quality list.

Practical implications

This study emphasises that for businesses to capitalise on the omnichannel model, the businesses must undergo a transformation involving technology convergence, customer-centricity and internal process reorganisation that integrates consumer feedback to co-create value. When a business adopts an omnichannel model, the business's priorities shift. Rather than depending solely on technology, faster delivery and channel integration, an omnichannel strategy requires strong leadership, a clear vision, training for all stakeholders and an understanding of customer pain points to reach the full potential.

Originality/value

The illustration of the omnichannel retail landscape using the 5W1H methodology and antecedents-decisions-outcomes (ADO) framework.

In this globe, customer experience management plays a crucial role in establishing sustainable omnichannel retailing strategies. Considering all the variables in the business environment, it is seen that effective tools of omnichannel operations should well be implemented as a response to effectively compete in the business environment. This chapter reveals some of the major literature and applications in the context of omnichannel retailing whereby the most concern of interest is given to the importance of customer experience and its formation.
