Abstract

Purpose

To investigate the general necessary condition for synthesis of square, real rational matrices of complex frequency as admittance matrices of active multiports with resistors, inductors, capacitors and possibly multiport transformers and to prove that this condition is also sufficient for synthesis of stable, square, real rational matrices of complex frequency as admittance matrices of balanced active multiports having only resistors, capacitors and voltage‐amplifiers with sufficiently large amplifications. The main aim of the paper is to provide a new and general method for stable admittance matrices synthesis and to develop strict realization algorithm by active balanced transformerless multiport networks.

Design/methodology/approach

The objectives of the paper are achieved by using factorization of regular polynomial matrices in complex frequency with certain degree as products of other regular polynomial matrices with specified degrees. A set of sufficient conditions for such a factorization is presented and derived a pertinent algorithm as the starting point for investigation and solving network synthesis problem and generation of class of equivalent realizations.

Findings

Theorem 1 states that sufficient condition for factorization of Pth order, generally regular polynomial matrix P(s) in complex frequency s with degree L, whose determinant has K distinct zeros, in form P(s)=P1(sP2(s), where 1≤p2=P20L−1 is degree of polynomial matrix P2(s), reads: K>(P−1)·L+p2−1. The coefficient‐matrices of s, s2,… in P1(s) and P2(s) are real or complex depending on whether distinct zeros of det P(s) are real or complex, respectively. Theorem 2 states that: (a) for realization of Pth order matrix of real rational functions in complex frequency s (i.e. RRF matrix) as admittance matrix of active balanced RLC P‐port network with multiport transformers, or without them, P generalized controlled‐sources and P controlling‐ports are necessary, in general; and (b) P balanced voltage‐controlled voltage‐sources (VCVSs) with real and by module greater than unity controlling coefficients (“voltage amplifications”) are sufficient for realization of stable admittance RRF matrix by active, balanced, transformerless, RC P‐port network.

Originality/value

This is a research paper with the following two main contributions (original results). First, a theorem on sufficient conditions for factorization of regular polynomial matrices in complex frequency; and second, a theorem relating to sufficient conditions for synthesis of matrices of real rational functions in complex frequency by active, balanced, transformerless networks. The results may be interesting for network theorists and researchers in the field of electric circuits and systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper addresses a gap in research literature in the fields of blockchain technology (BC), supply chain network dynamics (SC) and network effect phenomena (NE). Extant BC and SC literature describes the potential benefits to be reaped through the adoption of BC technology. While BC technology does not yet meet the researched expectations of adoption, performance and efficacy, the authors analyze the three inter-related fields (BC, SC and NE) to bridge this gap in theory.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper begins with a research review correlating the technological fundamentals of BC technology into fundamental value propositions for SC logistics contexts. The authors review the gap between these theoretical technological functions and the current ecosystem of BC applications. With an overarching understanding of BC in SC contexts, this paper then explores the phenomena of NE and attempts to synthesize various interrelated aspects of the three fields (BC, SC and NE). Research frameworks from extant literature are used for cross-comparing legacy software/information system solutions with potential and existing BC-based solutions. Case studies are utilized to support this analysis.

Findings

Several key considerations and themes are identified to better inform practitioner and researcher decision-making. Novel insights pertain to BC platform architecture and application modularity, integrated governance and decision-making capabilities, and the automation capabilities that arise from a healthy application and smart contract ecosystem.

Originality/value

The core contribution is the synthesis of network effect theory with SC phenomena and BC theory and the exploration of how these three fields are inter-related in the maturation of BC technology. Specifically, the authors deepen insights from extant literature by contextualizing findings with relevant interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks.

Abstract

Purpose

Light field images (LFIs) have gained popularity as a technology to increase the field of view (FoV) of plenoptic cameras since they can capture information about light rays with a large FoV. Wide FoV causes light field (LF) data to increase rapidly, which restricts the use of LF imaging in image processing, visual analysis and user interface. Effective LFI coding methods become of paramount importance. This paper aims to eliminate more redundancy by exploring sparsity and correlation in the angular domain of LFIs, as well as mitigate the loss of perceptual quality of LFIs caused by encoding.

Design/methodology/approach

This work proposes a new efficient LF coding framework. On the coding side, a new sampling scheme and a hierarchical prediction structure are used to eliminate redundancy in the LFI's angular and spatial domains. At the decoding side, high-quality dense LF is reconstructed using a view synthesis method based on the residual channel attention network (RCAN).

Findings

In three different LF datasets, our proposed coding framework not only reduces the transmitted bit rate but also maintains a higher view quality than the current more advanced methods.

Originality/value

(1) A new sampling scheme is designed to synthesize high-quality LFIs while better ensuring LF angular domain sparsity. (2) To further eliminate redundancy in the spatial domain, new ranking schemes and hierarchical prediction structures are designed. (3) A synthetic network based on RCAN and a novel loss function is designed to mitigate the perceptual quality loss due to the coding process.

Abstract

This paper examines the dynamics of business networks, that is, how these inter‐organisational networks grow and decline. Three rival theories are investigated: predetermined sequence of stages, evolution of unpredictable states and joinings theory which focus on positioning, repositioning and exit. A case study methodology was used for data collection and analysis. Data were collected from in‐depth interviews with network managers/owners of firms networking with other overseas firms entering into Australian and Asian markets. The findings revealed that inter‐firm network development is an evolution of unpredictable states rather than a predetermined sequence of irreversible stages. In turn, a six “states” model of inter‐firm network development was formulated from data. Implications for managerial practices and further research are advanced.

Abstract

Explores the dependency between relationship marketing (RM) and new developments in organization theory. In RM, relationships, networks and interaction are in focus. The primary role of marketing is to connect suppliers and customers but RM also includes relationships with other stakeholders, both inside and outside the organization. Presents a theoretical discourse based on two recent developments in Nordic research. One is RM and its emergence from traditional marketing, services marketing, the network approach of industrial marketing, and quality management. The other is research concerning imaginary organizations, in which the organization consists of a network of relationships between suppliers, customers, subcontractors, competitors, authorities and others, rather than being a structure with clear boundaries. The synthesis of RM and imaginary organizations leads to the concept of complete marketing equilibrium, where not only the market but also the organization and society are included in a network of interactive relationships.

Abstract

Reviews the value of network concepts as a means of portraying complex logistics and distribution systems. Reports on research which focuses on the broader issues of model formulation and solution techniques rather than specific applications. Addresses the issues of designing networks with a tree structure, and also more general ones in which loops are allowed and redundancy enforced. The decision variables involved are related to whether or not a link should exist between two specific pairs of nodes, and then what should be the level of traffic flow on that particular link. Describes the design problem in detail and possible models that could be used to represent it. Follows with a description of genetic algorithms to solve the synthesis problem of deciding the node‐link topology, and the use of linear and non‐linear programming to solve the problem of assigning traffic flow to a network with a given typology in a least‐cost manner. Concludes with a description of computational experience with solving such problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to provide a method for designing the shell and tube heat exchangers and examine the total annual cost of heat exchanger networks from the economic view based on the careful design of equipment.

Design/methodology/approach

Accurate evaluation of heat exchanger networks performance depends on detailed models of heat exchangers design. The simulations variables include nine design variables such as flow direction determination of each of the two fluids, number of tubes, number of tube passes, length of tubes, the arrangement of tubes, size and percentage of baffle cut, tube diameter and tube pitch. The optimal designing of the heat exchangers is based on geometrical and hydraulic modeling and using a hybrid genetic particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO-GA) technique. In this paper, optimization and minimization of the total annual cost of heat exchanger networks are considered as the objective function.

Findings

In this study, a fast and reliable method is used to simulate, optimize design parameters and evaluate heat transfer enhancement. PSO-GA algorithms have been used to minimize the total annual cost, which includes investment costs of heat exchangers and pumps, operating costs (pumping) and energy costs for utilities. Three case studies of four, six and nine streams are selected to demonstrate the accuracy of the method. Reductions of 0.55%, 23.5% and 14.78% are obtained in total annual cost for the selected streams, respectively.

Originality/value

In the present study, a reliable method is used to simulate and optimize design parameters and the economic optimization of the heat exchanger networks. Taking into account the importance of shell and tube heat exchangers in industrial applications and the complexity in their geometry, the PSO-GA methodology is adopted to obtain an optimal geometric configuration. The total annual cost is chosen as the objective function. Applying this technique to case studies demonstrates its ability to accurately design heat exchangers to optimize the objective function of the heat exchanger networks by giving the detail of design.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to develop a better understanding of network relationships in local tourism clusters and illustrate inter‐organizational forms in mountain tourism. The networking among mountain tourism resorts, aimed at solving organizational and technological shortfalls, in order to promote integrated but flexible tourist packages, has led to detailed empirical research and study on these topics. The research analysis considered three important Italian Alpine destinations, based on adjacency matrices graphics and analytical indicators, calculated by different algorithms for each variable. The research was based on questionnaires submitted to all tourism operators of these destinations, and in‐depth interviews with important local entrepreneurs. The main findings of the research have resulted in identifying four typical inter‐organizational forms (or structures) in Alpine tourism resorts: ▪ community model, each tourist operator works alone, with no inter‐organizational vision; ▪ corporative model, a highly concentrated organization based on recognised agreements, usually ontrolled by a few people; ▪ governed model, tourists are managed through associations or ‘equity systems’, such as consortiums, where each ‘node’ of the network offers entrepreneurial expertise; ▪ constellation model, high relational density and reciprocal trust allow good coordination and balance of power among the tourism enterprises.

Abstract

Fast iterative algorithms for designing birefringent filters with any specified spectral response are proposed. From the Jones formalism, we derive two polynomials representing the transmitted and rejected response of the filter, respectively. Once the coefficients of the filters are obtained, the orientation angle of each birefringent section and the phase shift introduced by each compensator can be determined by an iterative algorithm that gives an efficient solution to the birefringent filter design problem. Afterward, some design examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. In comparison with results reported in the literature, this approach provides the best performance in terms of accuracy and time complexity.

Abstract

We address the problem of selecting a topological design for a network having a single traffic source and uncertain demand at the remaining nodes. Solving the associated fixed charge network flow (FCF) problem requires finding a network design that limits both the fixed costs of establishing links and the variable costs of sending flow to the destinations. In this paper, we discuss how to obtain a sequence of optimal solutions that arise as the demand intensity varies from low levels to high. One of the network design alternatives associated with these solutions will be chosen based upon the dominant selection criteria of the decision maker. We consider both probabilistic and non-probabilistic criteria and compare the network designs associated with each. We show that the entire sequence of optimal solutions can be identified with little more effort than solving a single FCF problem instance. We also provide solution approaches that are relatively efficient and suggest good design alternatives based upon approximations to the optimal sequence.
