Abstract
This paper reports some of the findings from a survey of 2,027 British adults that was conducted in 2000. This investigation examined self‐reported alcohol consumption and the negative consequences associated with heavy or inappropriate alcohol consumption. In addition, information was elicited on the topic of the positive aspects of drinking. This paper examines the ‘drinking profile’ of those people who reported positive aspects of drinking. Most of the people surveyed reported that their past year's alcohol consumption had been enjoyable regardless of whether it had been associated with adverse consequences. In contrast, a few individuals reported drinking heavily even though they had not enjoyed their recent alcohol consumption. The relationship between alcohol consumption and its negative and positive consequences appears to be complex. There was clearly ambivalence between the adverse consequences associated with drinking and its positive effects. Many people appear prepared to tolerate some negative experiences as the price they pay for enjoying their drinking. This constitutes a major inhibiting factor in relation to preventive initiatives and therapeutic interventions related to problematic alcohol consumption.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to respond to food insecurity and environmental sustainability through school food gardens in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Design/methodology/approach
Permaculture is a method of organic agriculture where the garden design maintains a stable and productive ecosystem, mimicking natural processes and thereby creating a more natural and sustainable environment. Organic permaculture food gardens were established and integrated with the curriculum at two schools over the course of one year. A nutrition study of dietary intake and assessment of dietary diversity score was undertaken with a sample of 68 children.
Findings
Permaculture food gardens can contribute to children ' s physical, mental, and emotional health and can be a resource for teachers and learners. To achieve sustainability, practical and cultural challenges must be addressed.
Research limitations/implications
The project was implemented at only school sites, findings may not be applicable to all schools in all settings. This assessment was conducted after one year of implementation, impacts, and sustainability would be best assessed after three years. Conclusions are therefore based both on this case study and on the wider literature.
Practical implications
When implementing a school food garden there must be long-term support and mentoring for school staff.
Social implications
The value of a school food garden goes beyond the provision of nutrition and addressing food insecurity. Participation in gardening can increase students’ interactions with the natural world, and contribute to skills development, academic achievement, and well-being.
Originality/value
This paper informs discussion and practice related to school food gardens’ influence on holistic health and broader educational benefits. It is of relevance to health promotion and education practitioners, school garden developers, and funders.

Abstract
Purpose
Foodborne disease remains a significant public health threat and cause for concern. Despite numerous studies indicating that the domestic kitchen is a high-risk area for foodborne illness, consumers believe it is low-risk. The type of food being prepared in the kitchen has drastically changed, with an increased use of convenience products, perceived low-risk products. Little is known about consumers' behaviours with convenience meals. Therefore, it is essential to understand actual and perceived food safety behaviours in their use.
Methodology
A mixed-methods approach using in-home observations and semi-structured interviews was undertaken with participants from the UK and the Republic of Ireland (N = 50). Observational data was summarized using descriptive statistics and an inductive thematic analysis was conducted to interpret the qualitative data.
Findings
In this study general food safety behaviours, such as handwashing, use-by date checking, as well as identifying obvious safety hazard were suboptimal. However, participants' convenience meal safety behaviours were as optimal as possible with the provided instructions. The qualitative data supported the participants' struggle with the provided on-packet instructions. They also displayed participants' uncertain perceptions around different products, for example if oven-products could be reheated multiple times, and varying levels of concern around meat and dairy products. Consumers urged for more detailed and clearer instructions with these products. Recommendations for producers are provided to enhance consumer experience with the use of the products as well as contributing towards ensuring consumer safety.

Abstract
Researchers and practitioners working within transdisciplinary research projects face specific challenges when addressing representation of evidence-based concepts across complex occurrences, particularly when delivering a visitor experience design and documentary film encompassing an extensive cultural and natural heritage timeline period. In this chapter, these challenges are explored from the contrasting points of view of the view of the principal investigator and design lead and the filmmaker and researcher within an ongoing transdisciplinary research project Portalis, which is funded by the ERDF through The Ireland Wales Cooperation Programme.
The Portalis visitor experience design promotes and supports citizen science-based climate action behavioural change within six distinct Irish and Welsh cross-border coastal communities. It explores whether there are any parallels with how we can adapt to climate change now, with a focus on the resilience and innovation evidenced within Waterford's earliest settlements during and after South East Ireland's earlier climate change periods. The design research and the filmic documentation of archaeological and geological surveys is employed to map the story of these early post-glacial settlements 10,000 years ago along the Waterford Estuary. Interwoven through this mapping is a demonstration of how those living along the Estuary are preserving their maritime heritage through citizen science led engagement and community initiatives.
Adding a deep resonance to the research project, singular to Waterford, a new vision is called for; an acknowledgement of Waterford City and its Estuary as an area of unique conservation and growth and a recognition of this much travelled waterway as a designated and protected cultural landscape. A successful transdisciplinary approach creates a rich and accessible resource towards recognising the Estuary's cultural and marine heritage in city planning for the future. In so doing, it broaches the so-called rural-urban divide, adds to the global community of practice and allows for reflection on how urban planning can learn from our past in this context.
