Abstract

Provides a statistical overview of vertical and horizontal in equality on gender relations in higher education in the USA. States that though the female share of presidents, doctorates and enrolment is increasing, women earn less than men, lead lower status and small universities and choose lower status majors. Presents evidence suggesting that white women are more discriminated against than black women and that the integration of women in “male” disciplines has slowed down.

Abstract

I was appointed to the dual role of Principal Training Officer in the County of Avon's Department of Personnel Services and Associate Lecturer in the South West Regional Management Centre at Bristol Polytechnic in January 1975. I believe (and, what is more important, both these organisations also believe) that the concept of a training officer/lecturer joint appointment could be of great mutual benefit to both employers; this is particularly so at a time when most large concerns are wondering whether they are getting real value for money from training schemes, and this question is especially pertinent to management and supervisory training. It is with these areas which I am particularly involved in my day to day work.

Abstract

Discusses the changing organization of higher education in the USA as the universities cope with mass education for all and provides statistics for the female population and their areas of preference. Covers Title X and affirmative action programmes before looking at recent anti‐affirmative campaigns. Concludes that substantial progress has been made but there is still disparity in salary, rank and promotion which can not be explained by any other argument.

Abstract

This article is concerned with the management of a crisis situation which may occur within a business organization and which is likely to attract media attention. It is argued that the likelihood of occurrence of such an event is now much greater than it was previously – not least because of the speed of present day communications and the increased public demand for accountability. The writer contends that it is important for a senior executive to take ownership of a crisis and handle it strategically rather than allow a team of functional specialists to respond on a fire‐fighting basis. It is further argued that the most appropriate executive for this responsibility is the head of the marketing function, because of his involvement with all aspects of the business and its strategic direction.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to celebrate the manifold contributions made by Michael Thomas, marketing professor extraordinary.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper is an exercise in autobiographical memory, coupled with the subjective personal introspective procedures advocated by many leading marketing scholars, most notably, Steven Gould and Morris Holbrook.

Findings

The paper shows that ornithology is an apt metaphor – analogy, rather – for Professor Thomas's many and varied contributions to marketing thought.

Originality/value

The paper comes closer than most to defining the quintessential Michael Thomas.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.
