Abstract
The use of random assignment can be effective and appropriate in the evaluation of programmes that serve children in schools. Because random assignment creates pre‐treatment equality between treatment and control groups, this methodology is particularly effective for understanding the impact of an intervention. Contemporary research on educational experiments has tended to focus on programme results rather than on their origin or implementation. While programme results are important, they provide little guidance to those interested in designing and implementing programme evaluations that use random assignment. This article shares the practical lessons learned from three educational experiments with researchers and practitioners interested in pursuing evaluations that use random assignment.

Abstract
The need for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to support evidence‐based services to improve outcomes for children is increasingly recognised by researchers and policy‐makers. However, this brings a pressing requirement to build research capacity for conducting RCTs and to address the concerns of practitioners who may be suspicious about the method. This article reviews a variety of texts on the subject, ranging from analyses of the historical and political context of RCTs, to concise introductions of the key methodological and practical issues, to more in‐depth discussions of complex designs and statistics. The article seeks to help readers navigate these resources by focusing on seven questions that seem particularly salient for those considering whether and how to commission, undertake, participate in or use results from RCTs.

To present a case study of a digital initiative for cartographic materials in order to provide a reference for other institutions embarking on similar projects.
Abstract
Purpose
To present a case study of a digital initiative for cartographic materials in order to provide a reference for other institutions embarking on similar projects.
Design/methodology/approach
Describes the technical and practical details of the processes involved in georeferencing and providing online access to scanned aerial photographs.
Findings
In the short time that the site has been live, the Map Library has already seen a marked increase in reference queries from both local and national users.
Practical implications
From a practical standpoint, the project would not have been a success without collaboration between map, metadata, and systems librarians.
Originality/value
To date, little has been published about digital initiatives projects providing online access to historical aerial photographs, a distinct and complex subset of cartographic materials. It is hoped that this case study will allow other institutions to learn from the approach and experience of the University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries.

Abstract
The Commercial Invoice is the first EDI message to gain worldwide acceptance, and it has been registered as a standard by the United Nations. The action was hailed by the Commission of European Communities (CEC) as a significant step towards the international agreement on technical standards needed in order for electronic communications to gradually replace paperwork in world trade.

Abstract
Describes how the pamphlet collection at the University of Toledo’s Carlson Library is built and maintained, centering on the Pamphlet Collection Manual, which was specifically written for the collection. Discusses the collection’s mission, arrangement, OPAC access, circulation, selection, ordering, online cataloging, processing, weeding and record keeping as detailed in the manual. Provides a review of the literature since 1970 on academic library pamphlet collections.

Abstract
To meet the challenges of the electronic library, technical services staff members must be able to articulate the value they add to the institution—not only in the realm of the library's bibliographic database but also in the larger context of building an organizational framework for electronic information and services. Technical services departments must be willing to re‐engineer processing activities and equip their staffs with both the hardware and the skills needed to meet these challenges. In Mann Library, the digital or electronic library is being built upon the traditional infrastructure of the library. Responsibilities related to selecting, acquiring, describing, and servicing networked information are mainstreamed into the operations of the library. This article describes three projects that illustrate the range of activities in which technical services staff are engaged. In these projects, technical services staff have been called upon to provide an organizational framework for numeric, full‐text, and bibliographic information.
