Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand how the facesheet size, orientation and core size influence the analytical failure mechanism mode of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP)/polyvinyl chloride (PVC) sandwich structures subjected to three-point bending. The purpose of this study was to develop failure-mode map of GFRP/PVC sandwich structures. Sandwich structures with different facesheet and core thicknesses were used to develop the failure map.

Design/methodology/approach

The sandwich structure and facesheet were fabricated using a vacuum-assisted resin infusion method with core sizes of 10, 15 and 20 mm and facesheet thicknesses of 1.5 and 3 mm and were arranged in three different orientations: angle-ply, cross-ply and quasi-isotropic. The key failure modes that occur in sandwich structures were used to predict possible failures in the developed material. Analytical equations were used in MATLAB for each observed failure mode. The probable failure modes, namely, face yielding, core shear and indentation equations, were used to construct the failure maps and were compared with the experimental data.

Findings

The boundary of the two failure modes shifts with changes in the facesheet and core thicknesses. The theoretical stiffness of sandwich panels was higher than the experimental stiffness. Based on strength-to-weight ratio, specimens E10-4, A15-8 and E20-8 exhibited the best optimum values owing to their shorter distance to the boundary lines.

Originality/value

In this study, a failure map was used to predict the possible failure modes for different GFRP facesheet orientations and thicknesses and PVC core thickness sandwich structures. Little is known about the prediction of the failure modes of unidirectional GFRP arranged in different orientations and thicknesses and PVC core thicknesses for sandwich structures. Few studies have used failure mode maps with unidirectional GFRP oriented in angle-ply, cross-ply and quasi-isotropic directions as a facesheet for sandwich structures compared to bidirectional mats. This study can serve as a guide for the correct selection of materials during the design process of sandwich structures.

Abstract

Purpose

The boundary integral method (BIM) is very attractive to practicing engineers as it reduces the dimensionality of the problem by one, thereby making the procedure computationally inexpensive compared to its peers. The principal feature of this technique is the limitation of all its computations to only the boundaries of the domain. Although the procedure is well developed for the Laplace equation, the Poisson equation offers some computational challenges. Nevertheless, the literature provides a couple of solution methods. This paper revisits an alternate approach that has not gained much traction within the community. The purpose of this paper is to address the main bottleneck of that approach in an effort to popularize it and critically evaluate the errors introduced into the solution by that method.

Design/methodology/approach

The primary intent in the paper is to work on the particular solution of the Poisson equation by representing the source term through a Fourier series. The evaluation of the Fourier coefficients requires a rectangular domain even though the original domain can be of any arbitrary shape. The boundary conditions for the homogeneous solution gets modified by the projection of the particular solution on the original boundaries. The paper also develops a new Gauss quadrature procedure to compute the integrals appearing in the Fourier coefficients in case they cannot be analytically evaluated.

Findings

The current endeavor has developed two different representations of the source terms. A comprehensive set of benchmark exercises has successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of both the methods, especially the second one. A subsequent detailed analysis has identified the errors emanating from an inadequate number of boundary nodes and Fourier modes, a high difference in sizes between the particular solution and the original domains and the used Gauss quadrature integration procedures. Adequate mitigation procedures were successful in suppressing each of the above errors and in improving the solution accuracy to any desired level. A comparative study with the finite difference method revealed that the BIM was as accurate as the FDM but was computationally more efficient for problems of real-life scale. A later exercise minutely analyzed the heat transfer physics for a fin after validating the simulation results with the analytical solution that was separately derived. The final set of simulations demonstrated the applicability of the method to complicated geometries.

Originality/value

First, the newly developed Gauss quadrature integration procedure can efficiently compute the integrals during evaluation of the Fourier coefficients; the current literature lacks such a tool, thereby deterring researchers to adopt this category of methods. Second, to the best of the author’s knowledge, such a comprehensive error analysis of the solution method within the BIM framework for the Poisson equation does not currently exist in the literature. This particular exercise should go a long way in increasing the confidence of the research community to venture into this category of methods for the solution of the Poisson equation.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to address two research questions: Do the decision modes on foreign partner selection post-entry vary between different types of family small and medium enterprises (SMEs)? How does socio-emotional wealth (SEW) affect (if so) decision modes in international partnership post-entry decisions (e.g. engagements with or changes of international partners) in different types of family SMEs?

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a qualitative case study design of different types of family SMEs, namely, one family firm with a high level of family involvement in the internationalisation activities of the firm (FMH) and one family firm with a low level of family involvement in the internationalisation activities of the firm (FML).

Findings

The case study evidence indicates different decision modes on foreign partner selection post-entry in the investigated family SMEs: a bounded rationality mode in the FMH firm and a real option reasoning in the FML firm. The bounded rationality mode was linked with the appearance of SEW goals in the FMH firm, which in turn led to foreign partner engagements resulting also in a low speed of internationalisation growth. In contrast, the real option reasoning mode in the FML firm was not linked with SEW goals, and it led to international partner changes, resulting in a speedier internationalisation growth.

Originality/value

This study unearths the case that different types of family SMEs can employ different decision modes in their international partnerships, whereas SEW tendencies do not always appear.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to identify the location of cracks in composite plates using a normalized mode shape curve algorithm. Crack in any structure is a destructive occurrence. Detecting these cracks early is pivotal for ensuring safety and preventing potential accidents. To prevent failure of structures, it is crucial to detect these cracks effectively and take the necessary precautions. Hence, crack detection and localization techniques are used to avoid sudden failures of structures while in operation.

Design/methodology/approach

An experimental modal analysis is conducted on composite plates with and without cracks to determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes. For this purpose, an impact hammer, uniaxial accelerometer and four-channel vibration analyzer are used to find the natural frequencies and mode shapes. Numerical modal analysis is performed on no crack and cracked composite plates using ANSYS software, and these are validated by the experimental modal analysis results. The normalized mode shapes algorithm is trained using test data of the first three natural frequencies collected from numerical modal analysis on different cracked composite plates for localization of crack.

Findings

The natural frequencies derived from both experimental modal analysis and numerical modal analysis exhibit a variance of 9.6%. The estimation of the crack location is achieved with exceptional precision by intersecting the first three normalized mode shapes. The first three normalized mode shape curve intersections provide a solid indication of the crack’s location. As the difference in error between the actual and estimated crack locations is only 0.9%.

Originality/value

This study introduces the first application of experimental modal analysis in conjunction with the normalized mode shape curve algorithm for localizing cracks in composite plates. The normalization process of mode shapes, derived from experimental modal analysis, forms a fundamental component of the mode shape curve algorithm specifically designed for crack localization. Combining experimental modal analysis with a specific algorithm of normalizing mode shapes is used to identify and locate cracks within these composite plates.

Purpose

Information transparency is an important factor in enhancing trust and promoting interfirm cooperation. By combining transaction cost theory and institutional theory, this study aims to examines whether host-country firms’ information transparency prompt multinational enterprises’ (MNEs) to choose the joint venture entry mode for outward foreign direct investment (OFDI).

Design/methodology/approach

Using Heckman two-stage estimation method, this study examines Chinese listed manufacturing firms for the period 2014–2019.

Findings

The findings indicate that the higher the information transparency of host-country firms, the higher the possibility of MNEs choosing the joint venture entry mode for OFDI. This study further finds that the positive relationship between host country firms’ information transparency and the possibility of choosing the joint venture entry mode is enhanced by institutional distance, but weakened by MNEs’ host-country experience.

Originality/value

How to choose the appropriate entry mode of OFDI in the internationalization strategy is an important issue for MNEs to consider. As the postpandemic world is characterized by increased global risks, decoupling of economies, disruption of global value chains and the retreat of globalization (Contractor and Cantwell, 2022), how to further strengthen cooperation, reduce the cost and risk of MNEs and truly realize common construction and sharing is one of the hot issues in both practice and research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study attempts to determine the optimal pricing and warranty strategies for remanufactured products offered by independent remanufacturers (IRs). Specifically, it takes into account price competition and warranty service competition between the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and IR, ultimately providing recommendations on the selection of warranty service modes for IRs.

Design/methodology/approach

This study considers two warranty modes for IRs: in-housing and outsourcing. Based on game theory, this study identifies the conditions under which the warranty service for remanufactured product is outsourced to retailers in IR-remanufacturing mode. Furthermore, this study investigates how this strategic decision affects closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) operations by comparing the two modes in terms of profit, consumer surplus (CS), quantity and overall social welfare (SW).

Findings

Firstly, the provision strategy for IRs' warranty on remanufactured products depends mainly on the retailer’s warranty cost. If retailers have lower costs for warranties, IR opts to outsource the remanufactured product warranty to the retailer. Second, when retailers offer warranties at a lower cost, IRs prefer outsourcing remanufactured product warranty to retailers. In this way, it will maximize both the remanufacturer’s and retailer’s profits while achieving the optimal total profit for the entire supply chain. However, it’s not beneficial for the OEM. Third, the IR’s preference for warranty service provision strategy is influenced by customers’ acceptance of remanufactured product, customer sensitivity toward remanufactured product warranty and economies of scale in warranty service.

Practical implications

The findings offer operational insights into IR decision-making in selecting warranty service provision strategies for remanufactured products.

Originality/value

This study is among the first to examine warranty provision strategy for IRs in CLSC.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the effectiveness of 360-degree virtual reality (VR) videos compared to traditional preview modes in shaping customer perceptions and behavioral intentions toward the hospitality service provider. Specifically, the study investigates how self-construal moderates this relationship, offering novel and nuanced understanding of the customer decision-making process in the hospitality sector.

Design/methodology/approach

Three experiments were carried out. Study 1 examined the impact of preview modes on customers’ behavioral intentions. Study 2 examined the psychological mechanism of mental imagery and being hooked in the relationship between preview modes and behavioral intentions. Study 3 examined the moderating role of self-construal in the relationship between preview modes and behavioral intentions.

Findings

The study findings revealed that 360-degree VR videos are more effective than traditional preview modes in determining customers’ behavioral intentions. Mental imagery and being hooked explain this relationship. Furthermore, customers with highly independent self-construal evaluate 360-degree VR videos more favorably, while those with highly interdependent self-construal evaluate traditional preview modes more positively.

Practical implications

The research indicates that adopting VR applications can offer competitive advantage for hospitality service providers. The study findings provide hospitality providers with insights to tailor their marketing strategies by selecting preview modes that align with the psychological profiles of the customers.

Originality/value

The originality of the study lies in its pioneering efforts to explore how self-construal shapes customer responses to different preview modes. Furthermore, this study reveals the importance of psychological constructs in understanding the impact of VR applications on customer behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the growing acceptance of cashback offers (e.g. $10 PayPal cashback within 24 hours of the transaction) among retailers, this paper aims to understand how consumers evaluate them vis-à-vis traditional price-discounts and their subsequent impact on retailers’ promotional strategies.

Design/methodology/approach

Six experimental studies examine if and when consumers can discern differences in the time-of-reward-accrual (i.e. the waiting time associated with receiving promotional savings) of cashbacks and price-discounts. Building on evaluability theory, we propose that the time-of-reward-accrual of promotion is hard-to-evaluate. Put simply, consumers find it hard to assess the duration of waiting time associated with receiving promotions. Consequently, consumers’ perceptions of cashbacks vis-à-vis price-discounts can be influenced by whether they evaluate both promotions simultaneously [joint-evaluation (JE) mode] or independently [single-evaluation (SE) mode].

Findings

The initial four studies show that the time-of-reward-accrual of promotions is hard-to-evaluate. Cashbacks appear just as appealing as price-discounts when consumers evaluate them independently (SE-mode) but lose their appeal when consumers view them alongside price-discounts (JE-mode). The next two studies further enhance the generalizability of our findings by replicating the observed effects for different purchase types (hedonic vs utilitarian) and varying promotional benefit levels (high vs low).

Originality/value

By shedding light on evaluations of time-of-reward-accrual of promotion, this paper adds a new dimension to research on promotions. The paper also extends the application of evaluability theory beyond domains such as hiring, fairness judgments and product bundle assessments. The paper presents evaluation mode as a boundary condition to explain contradictory predictions from prior research for consumers’ preferences for delayed vs immediate promotions.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to reveal the relationship among energy efficiency, thermal comfort and thermal regulation of electrically heated footwear and to investigate influencing factors on the energy efficiency and thermal comfort.

Design/methodology/approach

A finite volume model was proposed to simulate the two-dimensional heat transfer in electrically heated footwear (EHF) under an extremely cold condition. The model domain consists of three-layer footwear materials, a heating pad, a sock material, an air gap and skin tissues. Model predictions were verified by experimental data from cold-contact exposure. Then the influencing factors on the energy efficiency and thermal comfort were investigated through parametric analysis.

Findings

The paper demonstrated that the skin temperature control (STC) mode provided superior thermal comfort compared to the heating pad temperature control (HPTC) mode. However, the energy efficiency for the HPTC mode with a heating temperature of 38 °C was 18% higher than the STC mode. The energy efficiency of EHF while reaching the state of thermal comfort was strongly determined by the arrangement and connection of heating elements, heating temperature, thickness and thermal conductivity of footwear materials.

Originality/value

The findings obtained in this paper can be used to engineer the EHF that provides optimal thermal comfort and energy efficiency in cold environments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a systematic review of literature on corporate engagement with start-ups (CEWS) by identifying the modes, contexts, antecedents, barriers and outcomes. As an emerging field, CEWS presently has no such review available which will help in building consensus within the field and shape future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

The study followed a two-phased systematic review of literature. Three research databases (i.e. Web of Science, ScienceDirect and SCOPUS) were accessed to gather and conduct the review. Of the total 379 papers retrieved, 63 total relevant papers were studied and analysed. The exhaustive review of literature helped to uncover the contexts, perspectives, antecedents, outcomes and barriers reported across the different modes of CEWS.

Findings

The study highlighted the five prominent modes of CEWS favoured by large corporations and start-ups. It found that the large corporations and start-ups associate with one another on the basis of complementarities of activities, resources and motives to pursue their strategic orientations. The engagements also face barriers on the ground, such as incompatibility of goals, power imbalances, cultural differences and weak engagement plans. Most important contexts seen were the high-technology industries in the developed economies like the USA and Europe. It also found that ecosystem creation, accessing innovation and corporate strategy have been preferred as the most productive modes of CEWS in the literature.

Practical implications

This review provides practitioners with a detailed list of the modes and drivers of CEWS. Subsequently, the barriers that need to be managed to successfully execute a specific mode of engagement. This shall enable the practitioners in developing and adopting the best practices while engaging with the start-ups to better facilitate the outcomes of CEWS.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there is no systematic literature review available in the domain of CEWS – thus, this study makes an important methodological contribution to the field. By consolidating the fragmented yet growing knowledge on CEWS, the study presents a detailed understanding of what drives and obstructs the engagement between large corporations and start-ups.
