Abstract

Purpose

Many electric circuits feature some type of non-linearity of their used devices. Non-linear resistors or inductors could be typical examples. Also, all semiconductor devices are in their nature non-linear ones. The simulation models are very important parts of the design of the devices in various fields of industry. Multiply (multiple) simulation, verified by the measurement on the physical sample, help to improve the converter design by understanding the current and voltage behavior of non-linear elements. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Mathematical model of LCTLC inverter was made. Fictitious exciting function was applied on LCTLC inverter model. The non-linear inductance with the real core EFD model has been created and consequentially used for MatLab simulation experiments. MatLab and OrCAD/PSpice simulation results were compared with experimental measurements carried out on physical sample.

Findings

The authors have found how to simulate non-linear resonant circuits within mathematical apparatus using fictitious exciting function method. The authors provided comparisons between proposed simulation mathematical model and relevant physical sample. Multiply simulations can help to improve the converter design by understanding the current and voltage behavior of non-linear elements.

Research limitations/implications

The proposed method is applicable for simulation purposes. The only limitation is that MatLab model does not include hysteresis curve of the core, therefore it has to be modeled.

Practical implications

The design of power supplies (switched mode power supplies, UPS and resonant inverter).

Originality/value

Research in the area of behaviors of non-linear components in resonant circuits.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to check the Solar Photovoltaic (PV) inverter working condition with modified unipolar switching pulse. The gate pulse for the inverter switches is generated in MATLAB simulation and interfaced with hardware protype. Simulation results can be compared with hardware results.

Design/methodology/approach

A considerable amount of research has been done on different Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques. Based on the findings, a modified Unipolar Sinusoidal PWM technique was created with one reference signal and two carrier signals+ (one for the positive half cycle and the other for the negative half cycle) and simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The prototype inverter module receives the simulated switching pulses via dSPACE DS1104 hardware software interfacing board. The hardware implementation has been done, and the hardware results compared with simulation results for various input voltage levels using resistive load.

Findings

This modified switching pulse has dead band and additional hardware setup is not required. 3-phase multi-level inverter output waveform has been achieved with six switches in this method and with low filter values, pure sine wave output can be obtained in simulation. By this method of switching pulse generation and testing, for every modification in switching pulse hardware gate driver is not required. Resulting time consumption and money investment are lower.

Originality/value

Modified Unipolar SPWM pulse generation technique is novel method for solar PV inverter. The switching pulse has been designed and tested in both MATLAB/Simulation and hardware prototype inverter. Hardware and software results are identical. This method of pulse generation and hardware implementation has not been done anywhere before.

Abstract

Purpose

Silicon photovoltaics technology has drawbacks of high cost and power conversion efficiency. In order to extract the maximum output power of the module, maximum power point (MPP) is used by implying the nonlinear behavior of I-V characteristics. Different techniques are used regarding maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The paper aims to review the techniques of MPPT used in PV systems and review the comparison between Perturb and Observe (P&O) method and incremental conductance (IC) method that are used to track the maximum power and gives a comparative review of all those techniques.

Design/methodology/approach

A study of MPPT techniques for photovoltaic (PV) systems is presented. Matlab Simulink is used to find the MPP using P&O simulation along with IC simulation at a steady temperature and irradiance.

Findings

MATLAB simulations are used to implement the P&O method and IC method, which includes a PV cell connected to an MPPT-controlled boost converter. The simulation results demonstrate the accuracy of the PV model as well as the functional value of the algorithms, which has improved tracking efficiency and dynamic characteristics. P&O solution gave 94% performance when configured. P&O controller has a better time response process. As compared to the P&O method of tracking, the incremental conductance response rate was significantly slower.

Originality/value

In PV systems, MPPT techniques are used to optimize the PV array output power by continuously tracking the MPP under a variety of operating conditions, including cell temperature and irradiation level.

Robotic industrial applications are very well established in the manufacturing industry, while they are relatively in their infancy phase in the construction sector. The need for automation in construction is clear especially in repetitive tasks. The excavation process, which is generally critical in most construction projects, is a prime example of such tasks. This paper addresses automation assistance in excavation. The work utilized the robotics approach towards the automation of a typical excavator model, whose structure closely resembled that of an industrial manipulator. A simulation package using Matlab was developed using several embedded design and analysis tools. Emulation was also carried out on the RHINO educational robot to confirm the simulation results. The constructed simulation package offered an integrated environment for trajectory design and analysis for an excavator while addressing the constraints related to the excavator structure, safety and stability, and mode of application.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain an optimal mobile robot path planning by the hybrid algorithm, which is developed by two nature inspired meta-heuristic algorithms, namely, cuckoo-search and bat algorithm (BA) in an unknown or partially known environment. The cuckoo-search algorithm is based on the parasitic behavior of the cuckoo, and the BA is based on the echolocation behavior of the bats.

Design/methodology/approach

The developed algorithm starts by sensing the obstacles in the environment using ultrasonic sensor. If there are any obstacles in the path, the authors apply the developed algorithm to find the optimal path otherwise reach the target point directly through diagonal distance.

Findings

The developed algorithm is implemented in MATLAB for the simulation to test the efficiency of the algorithm for different environments. The same path is considered to implement the experiment in the real-world environment. The ARDUINO microcontroller along with the ultrasonic sensor is considered to obtain the path length and time of travel of the robot to reach the goal point.

Originality/value

In this paper, a new hybrid algorithm has been developed to find the optimal path of the mobile robot using cuckoo search and BAs. The developed algorithm is tested with the real-world environment using the mobile robot.

Abstract

Purpose

A laser seeker is an important element in missile guidance and control systems, responsible for target detection and tracking. Its control is, however, a challenging problem due to complex dynamics and various acting disturbances. Hence, the purpose of this study is to propose a systematic design, tuning, analysis and performance verification of a nonlinear active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) algorithm for the specific case of the laser seeker system.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed systematic approach of nonlinear ADRC application to the laser seeker system consists of the following steps. The complex laser seeker control problem is first expressed as a regulation problem. Then, a nonlinear extended state observer (ESO) with varying gains is used to improve the performance of a conventionally used linear ESO (LESO), which enables better control quality in both transient and steady-state periods. In the next step, a systematic observer tuning, based on a detailed analysis of the system disturbances, is proposed. The stability of the overall control system is then verified using a describing function method. Next, the implementation of the NESO-based ADRC solution is realized in a fixed-point format using MATLAB/Simulink and Xilinx System Generator. Finally, the considered laser seeker control system is implemented in discrete form and comprehensively tested through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) co-simulation.

Findings

Through the conducted comparative study of LESO-based and NESO-based ADRC algorithms for the laser seeker system, the advantages of the proposed nonlinear scheme are shown. It is concluded that the NESO-based ADRC scheme for the laser seeker system (with appropriate parameters tuning methodology) provides better control performance in both transient and steady-state periods. The conducted multicriteria study validates the efficacy of the proposed systematic approach of applying nonlinear ADRC to laser seeker systems.

Practical implications

In practice, the obtained results imply that the laser seeker system, governed by the studied nonlinear version of the ADRC algorithm, could potentially detect and track targets faster and more accurately than the system based on the common linear ADRC algorithm. In addition, the article presents the step-by-step procedure for the design, field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation and HIL-based co-simulation of the proposed nonlinear controller, which can be used by control practitioners as one of the last validation stages before experimental tests on a real guidance system.

Originality/value

The main contribution of this work is the systematic procedure of applying the ADRC scheme with NESO for the specific case of the laser seeker system. It includes its design, tuning, analysis and performance verification (with simulation and FPGA hardware). The novelty of the work is also the combination and practical realization of known theoretical elements (NESO structure, NESO parameter tuning, ADRC closed-loop stability analysis) in the specific case of the laser seeker system. The results of the conducted applied research increase the current state of the art related to robust control of laser seeker systems working in disturbed and uncertain conditions.

Purpose

Internet of things (IoT) is essential in technical, social and economic domains, but there are many challenges that researchers are continuously trying to solve. Traditional resource allocation methods in IoT focused on the optimal resource selection process, but the energy consumption for allocating resources is not considered sufficiently. This paper aims to propose a resource allocation technique aiming at energy and delay reduction in resource allocation. Because of the non-deterministic polynomial-time hard nature of the resource allocation issue and the forest optimization algorithm’s success in complex problems, the authors used this algorithm to allocate resources in IoT.

Design/methodology/approach

For the vast majority of IoT applications, energy-efficient communications, sustainable energy supply and reduction of latency have been major goals in resource allocation, making operating systems and applications more efficient. One of the most critical challenges in this field is efficient resource allocation. This paper has provided a new technique to solve the mentioned problem using the forest optimization algorithm. To simulate and analyze the proposed technique, the MATLAB software environment has been used. The results obtained from implementing the proposed method have been compared to the particle swarm optimization (PSO), genetic algorithm (GA) and distance-based algorithm.

Findings

Simulation results show that the proper performance of the proposed technique. The proposed method, in terms of “energy” and “delay,” is better than other ones (GA, PSO and distance-based algorithm).

Practical implications

The paper presents a useful method for improving resource allocation methods. The proposed method has higher efficiency compared to the previous methods. The MATLAB-based simulation results have indicated that energy consumption and delay have been improved compared to other algorithms, which causes the high application of this method in practical projects. In the future, the focus will be on resource failure and reducing the service level agreement violation rate concerning the number of resources.

Originality/value

The proposed technique can solve the mentioned problem in the IoT with the best resource utilization, low delay and reduced energy consumption. The proposed forest optimization-based algorithm is a promising technique to help enterprises participate in IoT initiatives and develop their business.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to design a very low‐noise transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for a novel multi‐pixel CMOS photon detector which performs secondary electron (SE) detection in the scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Design/methodology/approach

The TIA, which is implemented with three‐stage push‐pull inverters, is optimised using a nomograph technique developed in MATLAB. SPICE simulations are conducted to verify the results generated from MATLAB. Important performance figures are obtained experimentally and these measurements are compared with simulation results.

Findings

A low‐noise TIA fabricated in a standard 0.35 μm CMOS technology was tested. Experimental results obtained show that the TIA connected to a photodiode with a junction capacitance of 0.8 pF can carry out its task effectively with a transimpedance gain of 126.9 dBΩ, a bandwidth of 9.8 MHz, an input‐referred noise of 2.50×10−13 A/√Hz and an SNR of 12.8. The power consumption of the TIA was 49.3 mW. These encouraging results have exhibited the potential of the circuit for use in the CMOS photon detector.

Originality/value

This paper presents a low‐noise transimpedance amplifier that is highly suitable to be used as a critical constituent block for the CMOS photon detector which aims to take over the role of photomultiplier tube in SE detection in the SEM. Solid‐state approaches have recently been reinvigorated for improving certain aspects of SE detection in scanning electron microscopy and this work has supported and contributed to the trend.

Abstract

Purpose

A saturated iron core superconducting fault current limiter (SISFCL) has an important role to play in the present-day power system, providing effective protection against electrical faults and thus ensuring an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the consumers. Previous mathematical models developed to describe the SISFCL use a simple flux density-magnetic field intensity curve representing the ferromagnetic core. As the magnetic state of the core affects the efficient working of the device, this paper aims to present a novel approach in the mathematical modeling of the device with the inclusion of hysteresis.

Design/methodology/approach

The Jiles–Atherton’s hysteresis model is utilized to develop the mathematical model of the limiter. The model is numerically solved using MATLAB. To support the validity of model, finite element model (FEM) with similar specifications was simulated.

Findings

Response of the limiter based on the developed mathematical model is in close agreement with the FEM simulations. To illustrate the effect of the hysteresis, the responses are compared by using three different hysteresis characteristics. Harmonic analysis is performed and comparison is carried out utilizing fast Fourier transform and continuous wavelet transform. It is observed that the core with narrower hysteresis characteristic not only produces a better current suppression but also creates a higher voltage drop across the DC source. It also injects more harmonics in the system under fault condition.

Originality/value

Inclusion of hysteresis in the mathematical model presents a more realistic approach in the transient analysis of the device. The paper provides an essential insight into the effect of the core hysteresis characteristic on the device performance.

Purpose

Jumping robots with coordinated multiple legs have been a hot research subject during the past years because of their excellent abilities in fast moving and obstacle-climbing. However, dynamics of jumping process of these coordinated legged robots are complex because of collisions between coordinated legs and the ground. This paper aims to analyze features of jumping process and to present the kinematic and dynamic models of a novel sole-type quadruped jumping robot with variable coordinated joints.

Design/methodology/approach

A complete jumping period of is divided into several subphases according to contact status of different coordinated legs to the ground. Continuous dynamics and discrete dynamics are established in different subphases. Simulations are performed in MATLAB software and ADAMS environment.

Findings

Comparison between two-set simulated results acquired from ADAMS and MATLAB demonstrates the validity of kinematic and dynamic equations.

Originality/value

The established dynamics establish the foundation of further research in motion planning and controller design of coordinated multiple legs.
