Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to explore the domain of leader’s creativity and suggests that leader’s creativity can be present as both worker-role creativity and manager-role creativity. Then, the study examines the influence of leader’s worker-role creativity and manager-role creativity on employees’ creativity and team creativity. As a contextual factor, the identification with leader is taken as a moderator at both the individual and team levels.
Design/methodology/approach
With data that was collected from 229 employees and 32 team leaders in entrepreneurial and R&D teams of China, hierarchical regression is conducted to test the hypotheses at individual and team levels separately.
Findings
The results show that leader identification plays a different role in moderating the effects of worker-role creativity and manager-role creativity on employees’ and team creativity. For the relationships between worker-role creativity and employees’ and team creativity, they are positive when leader identification is high and negative when it is low. For the relationships between manager-role creativity and team creativity, it is stronger when leader identification is higher rather than lower.
Research limitations/implications
This study answers the call for studying the roles of creative role models and provides new evidence of the leader as a role model. The exploration of the domain of leader’s creativity and the different effects on creative outcome brings an interesting perspective on creativity and leadership research.
Originality/value
The present study draws on the advance to develop the content of leader’s creativity. Then, the moderating role of identification with leader between leader’s creativity and employees’ creativity and team creativity is comprehensively examined.

Abstract
Purpose
The present study aims to advance a new framework to spur creativity at individual and team levels in the construction industry by studying a leader's sense of humor. The authors develop and test a multi-level model to investigate the direct and indirect effects of leader's humor on creativity within teams working on construction projects. The authors draw on the benign violation theory to hypothesize that a leader's sense of humor influences the acceptability of norm violations in teams, which helps to improve their creativity. The authors also integrate the benign violation theory with the social information processing theory to examine the indirect effects of project leader's sense of humor on individual- and team-level creativity via team psychological safety.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors collected data from 165 members nested in 45 teams working on construction projects in China. The construct's factor structure and discriminant validity were established through confirmatory factor analysis. The authors used multi-level modeling via Mplus to test team-level to the individual-level direct and indirect hypotheses, while team-level direct and indirect hypotheses were tested using ordinary least squares regression.
Findings
The results show that the leader's humor has a dual positive direct effect on individual and team creativity. Furthermore, these effects are partially mediated by team psychological safety. The implications of these findings to improve the construction management theory and practice are discussed in the manuscript.
Originality/value
The current study contributes to the literature by understanding the significance of leader humor in predicting individual-level and team-level creativity within the construction sector. It expands the literature by examining team psychological safety as the underlying mechanism in the relationship between leader humor and creativity.

Abstract
Purpose
The primary objective of this study is to examine the nexus between transformational leadership (TL) and followers' radical creativity (FRC). In contrast, creative process engagement (CPE) and leader creativity expectation (LCE) was employed as a mediating and a moderator role, respectively.
Design/methodology/approach
A quantitative exploratory survey was applied as a research design, and 293 valid responses were collected from industry-university collaborative team leaders-followers. The authors performed descriptive and partial least square based structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis using the SPSS 23 and Smart-PLS 3.0 package program to test the hypothesis.
Findings
Empirical results revealed that the TL positively and significantly influences the FRC. Therefore, the mediation of CPE bridges the relationship between TL and FRC, while the moderating role of LCE was insignificant. TL with higher CPE indirectly enhances the FRC.
Research limitations/implications
Unlike the prior conventional componential theory of creativity (CTC), this study extends the scope of CTC addressing CPE and LCE to investigate the nexus between TL and FRC and contributes to the current literature leaders-followers relationship.
Practical implications
Practically, this research contributes to the growing body of the literature demonstrating how organizations might foster radical creativity in their employees and how to inspire followers to participate in radical creativity activities that might enhance organizational performance.
Originality/value
This study has broadened the scope of the CTC by emphasizing the mediating function of CPE in promoting particular aspects of followers' creativity.

Abstract
Purpose
Leadership is an essential contributor to employee creative self-efficacy, and past research suggests a positive relationship between servant leadership and creative self-efficacy. However, the relationship is complex and contingent upon moderating variables, and this research examines the moderating effect of role clarity by drawing on social exchange theory and social cognitive theory.
Design/methodology/approach
Data collected from a survey among 116 emergency room employees is used to test the research model using moderated ordinary least squares regression.
Findings
The results confirm a positive relationship between servant leadership and creative self-efficacy and suggest a U-shaped relationship between role clarity and creative self-efficacy. Furthermore, role clarity positively moderates the relationship between servant leadership and creative self-efficacy.
Research limitations/implications
The sample used for this research mainly consisted of highly educated employees within a specific setting. Future research is needed to study if the relationships found in this research can be generalized to other organizational settings.
Practical implications
This research suggests that leaders can support employees' creative self-efficacy through servant leadership, particularly when coupled with high role clarity.
Originality/value
Rapidly changing work environments are characterized by decreased role clarity, so attention is needed to its moderating role on the relationship between servant leadership and creative self-efficacy.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyse the influence approach between team leadership and research and develop (R&D) team creativity in one joint‐venture firm of Chinese hi‐tech industries.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from 14 R&D teams in one leading electronic joint‐venture firm in China based on questionnaires. Data were analyzed using hierarchical regression analysis to test the mediate effect of knowledge sharing on the relationship between leader's empowerment behavior and team creativity.
Findings
The results reveal that, after the effects of leader's empowerment behavior had been controlled, tacit knowledge sharing contributed significantly to the explained variance of team creativity, while the explicate knowledge sharing was not significantly affect the creativity. Thus, tacit knowledge sharing partially mediated the relationship between leader's empowerment behavior and team creativity. The limitations of this study include it just selects the self‐report questionnaire to do the data collection, and the samples just come from one company in China.
Practical implications
This empirical study implicates that it is necessary for R&D team leader to manage team communication, such as management the team communication channel and work place, as team communication is the pre‐requirement of the team divergent thinking. Second, team leaders can use the empowerment behaviors to encourage team members do tacit knowledge sharing. This might be a challenge of Chinese R&D team leaders in the hi‐tech industries. It means instead of maintaining personal authority which is the traditional leadership behavior in China, R&D team leader should learn to do more empowering behavior to improve the team creativity.
Originality/value
This paper points out team communication is the important approach between team leader's empowering behavior and the team creativity under the merging contexts. Furthermore, it empirical finds that the tacit knowledge share rather than the explicit knowledge sharing has such mediation effect.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to introduce a new cognitive style, dialectical thinking, to demonstrate how it can influence a leader’s impact on team conflict and employee performance. Specifically, this study intends to answer the research questions “whether and how leader’s dialectical thinking would influence employee performance” with conflict management perspective in the Chinese context.
Design/methodology/approach
Multilevel structural equation modeling was used to test the theoretical model with 222 employees in 43 teams from Chinese high-tech manufacturing firms.
Findings
The authors found that the leader’s dialectical thinking had positive relationships with employee creativity and in-role performance and that the relationships were mediated by the leader’s conflict management approach and team conflict in sequence.
Practical implications
Selecting, recruiting or promoting of leaders with a dialectical thinking style or providing training to enhance leaders’ dialectical thinking is important for facilitating team conflict management and employee performance.
Originality/value
This is the first empirical paper to introduce dialectical thinking into the leadership, conflict and employee performance literatures.

Purpose
This article explores the complementarity between leader encouragement of creativity and knowledge-sharing among peers in enhancing employee creativity in the hotel context. The authors further examine the role of absorptive capability in setting a contextual condition under which creativity affects employee performance.
Design/methodology/approach
A web-based survey and face-to-face interviews were a means of two-round data collection while using a partial least squares technique for model estimation.
Findings
An analysis of 277 employees showed that leader encouragement and knowledge-sharing are important for creativity to drive performance. At high levels of absorptive capacity, employee performance increases rapidly as creativity increases.
Research limitations/implications
This article extends how the complementarity between leader encouragement and knowledge-sharing plays an important role in explaining employee creativity and performance under the boundary condition of absorptive capacity.
Practical implications
Organizational managers could embrace a future creativity–performance strategy by developing absorptive capacity with reward systems to optimize employee performance.
Originality/value
This article substantiates the role of leader encouragement and knowledge-sharing in enhancing the relationship between employee creativity and performance. The strength of this relationship is dependent on the positive moderation of absorptive capacity.

Abstract
Purpose
Drawing upon the literature on person-leader supplementary fit literature, this study aims to positions dissatisfaction with organizational performance as a difficult condition that moderates the relationship between leader-employee congruence/incongruence in creativity goal and employee innovative performance.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper data were collected from 226 leader-employee dyads from several information technology companies in China. Polynomial regression combined with the response surface methodology was used to test the hypotheses.
Findings
Three conclusions were drawn. First, employee innovative performance was maximized when leaders and employees were congruence in creativity goal. Second, in the case of congruence, employee had higher innovative performance when a leader's and an employee's creativity goal matched at high levels. Third, dissatisfaction with organizational performance moderated the effect of leader – employee congruence in creativity goal on employee innovative performance.
Originality/value
This study enhanced theoretical developments by considering the importance of leaders' congruence with employees in creativity goal for the first time. Additionally, the research results provided better practical guidance for how to help employees recover from difficult condition and continue to participate in innovation.

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to examine how servant leadership and political skill combine to impact workplace spirituality and employee creativity.
Design/methodology/approach
Participants were working adults recruited by graduate and undergraduate students from a US public regional comprehensive university. Data were collected across three time periods, with a final sample size of 280 participants.
Findings
The authors’ findings suggest that servant leaders impact employee creativity by fostering an environment that promotes workplace spirituality. Furthermore, this relationship is strengthened to the extent that the servant leader possesses high levels of political skill.
Research limitations/implications
This study provides a foundation for the interplay between servant leadership and political skill. Therefore, the data collection procedures undertaken in this study (i.e. from sources in multiple organizations) are beneficial. A limitation to this study is the use of a single informant to measure all of the constructs, which may cause a bias in the results.
Practical implications

Originality/value
Although servant leadership research continues to receive increased attention in the extant literature, researchers have tended to focus on the relational aspects of servant leadership. Curiously, the “leader” side of servant leadership has been largely neglected. As a result, some have questioned the construct as a viable leadership model. Greenleaf (1977), however, noted that servant leaders also possess conceptual skills; yet, these skills are rarely included in servant leadership measurements or empirical studies. The authors argue that political skill captures the essence of these abilities, and that including it strengthens the servant leader’s impact on workplace spirituality, ultimately influencing employee creativity.

Abstract
Purpose
The aim of this study is twofold; to test the effects of participative and authoritarian leadership styles on employee creativity; and to examine whether organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) mediates the relationship between these leadership styles and employee creativity.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey tool was employed in this research for data collection from the staff at higher education institutions in Malaysia. The collected data were analyzed via PLS-SEM to verify research hypotheses and reach at conclusions.
Findings
The outcomes verified that participative leadership positively affects OCB as well as employee creativity. The findings also demonstrated that authoritarian leadership does not really have any impact on the creativity and OCB of employees. Finally, the results demonstrated that OCB mediates the connection between a leader's participative approach and employee creativity, while its mediating effect among authoritarian leadership and employee creativity is not supported.
Originality/value
This paper addresses research gaps in the existing literature with regards to the role of participative and authoritarian leadership in predicting employee creativity through OCB. There are also scarce research studies on the linkages among the chosen constructs, particularly in higher education context.
