Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of varying compaction pressure on magnetic properties of self-developed soft magnetic composite (SMC) cores. The change in shape of ferromagnetic hysteresis curves has – in turn – the impact on the values of hysteresis model parameters. The phenomenological GRUCAD model is chosen for description of hysteresis curves.

Design/methodology/approach

Several cylinder-shaped cores have been made from a mixture of iron powder and suspense polyvinyl chloride using a hydraulic press with a form and a band with a thermocouple for controlling heat treatment conditions. The only varying parameter in the study is the compaction pressure. The magnetic properties of developed cores have been measured using a computer-acquisition card and LabView software. The obtained hysteresis curves are fitted to the equations of the phenomenological GRUCAD model. This description is compliant with the laws of irreversible thermodynamics. The variations of model parameters are presented as functions of compacting pressure.

Findings

The compaction pressure has a significant impact on magnetic properties of self-developed SMC cores. The paper provides a number of charts useful for checking how the parameters of the hysteresis model are affected.

Research limitations/implications

The present paper is limited to modelling symmetrical loops only. Description of more complex magnetization cycles is postponed to another, forthcoming paper.

Practical implications

The GRUCAD hysteresis model may be a useful tool for the designers of magnetic circuits. Its parameters depend on the processing conditions (in this study – the compaction pressure) of the SMC cores.

Originality/value

Modelling of magnetic properties of SMC cores has been carried so far using some well-known description like Preisach, Takács and Jiles–Atherton proposals. The GRUCAD model has a number of advantages, and it may be a useful alternative to the latter formalism. So far it has been used for description of hysteresis curves in conventional materials like non-oriented and grain-oriented electrical steels. In the present work, it is applied to novel SMC materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between processing conditions and magnetic properties of cores made of Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) Somaloy 500.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of compaction pressure and hardening temperature may be combined considering SMC density. This quantity may be chosen for optimization of properties of ready-made cores. In order to describe hysteresis loops the phenomenological model based on hyperbolic tangent transformation is applied.

Findings

SMC density affects substantially the shape of hysteresis loop. The paper provides a number of charts useful for checking how the parameters of the hysteresis model are affected.

Research limitations/implications

The present study considers just one composition of the SMC and one type of lubricant. Future research shall be devoted to verification of the approach on a wider class of SMCs.

Practical implications

Material density may be a relevant quantity in optimization of magnetic properties of ready-made SMC cores. The simple hysteresis model based on the, “effective field” concept and Takács’ idea of hyperbolic tangent transformation may be useful for description of hysteresis curves of SMC cores. Model parameters are sensitive against variations of material density.

Originality/value

The results of the analysis may be useful for designers of magnetic circuits made of SMCs.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the paper is to provide a simple and reliable hysteresis model for prediction of magnetization curves of a resistance spot welding transformer (RSWT) core, operating in a wide range of flux densities and excitation frequencies.

Design/methodology/approach

The hysteresis model considered in the paper is the T(x) description advanced by J. Takács. Three options to extend the model to the dynamic magnetization conditions are considered. The excitation conditions differ from those prescribed by international standards.

Findings

The quasi‐static Takács model combined with a fractional viscosity equation similar to that proposed by S.E. Zirka outperforms other considered options. The effect of eddy currents may be considered as a disturbance factor to the frequency‐independent quasi‐static hysteresis loop.

Research limitations/implications

The combined approach yields in most cases a satisfactory agreement between theory and experiment. For highest frequency considered in the paper (1 kHz) excessive “heels” were observed in the modelled loops. This artifact may be reduced by the introduction of a more complicated relationship for the viscous term. Future work shall be devoted to this issue.

Practical implications

The combined Takács‐Zirka model is a useful tool for prediction of magnetization curves of a RSWT core in a wide range of flux densities and excitation frequencies.

Originality/value

The usefulness of the Takács description has been verified in a practical application. The model is able to predict magnetization curves under non‐standard excitation conditions.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the paper is to present a simple approach to modelling minor hysteresis loops in grain‐oriented steel sheets under quasi‐static and dynamic conditions. The hysteresis phenomenon is described with a recently developed hybrid model, which combines ideas inherent in the product Preisach model and the Jiles‐Atherton description. The dynamic effects due to eddy currents are taken into account in the description using a lagged response with respect to the input.

Design/methodology/approach

It is assumed that some model parameters might be dependent on the level of relative magnetization within the material. Their dependencies could be given as power laws. The values of scaling coefficients in power laws are determined.

Findings

A satisfactory agreement of experimental and modelled quasi‐static and dynamic hysteresis loops is obtained.

Research limitations/implications

The present study provides a starting point for further verification of the approach for other classes of soft magnetic materials, which could be described with the developed model. At present, the approach to model minor loops by the update of model parameters is verified for the B‐sine excitation case.

Practical implications

The “branch‐and‐bound” optimization algorithm is a useful tool for recovery of the values of both model parameters and scaling coefficients as well.

Originality/value

The recently developed hybrid description of hysteresis phenomenon can be successfully extended to take into account symmetric minor loops. The developed approach could be a framework to develop a comprehensive description of magnetization phenomena in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the methodology and software for the optimization of rotor structure of the line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM). To prove usefulness of presented approach the case study problem has been solved.

Design/methodology/approach

The modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm has been employed for the optimization of LSPMSM. The optimization solver has been elaborated in Delphi environment. The software consists of two modules: an optimization solver and a numerical model of LSPMSM. The model of the considered machine has been developed in the ANSYS Maxwell environment. In the optimization procedure the objective function has been based on maximizing efficiency and power factor.

Findings

Obtained results show that modified PSO algorithm can be successfully applied for the optimization of the rotor structure of LSPMSM. This software can be used as a design tool to improve the performance of LSPMSM. The results of studied case problem illustrate that it is possible to optimize rotor of LSPMSM to achieve good self-starting properties with simultaneous minimization of usage of permanent magnet material.

Research limitations/implications

Both, the simpler lumped parameters model and more advanced field model of the motor were tested. Presented comparison to the results of the finite element analysis (FEA) shows that for considered in the paper the case study problem the accuracy of circuit model is acceptable.

Practical implications

Presented approach and developed software can be used as an effective design tool to improve the performance of LSPMSM.

Originality/value

The paper offers appropriate approach for optimizing the permanent magnet synchronous motors having ability to start by direct connection to the grid.
