Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to elaborate the method and algorithm for the analysis of the influence of temperature on back electromotive force (BEMF) waveforms in a line start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM).

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to compare parameters and properties of optimal structures of a line-start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM) for the cage winding of a different rotor bar shape.
Design/methodology/approach
The mathematical model of the considered motor includes the equation of the electromagnetic field, the electric circuit equations and equation of mechanical equilibrium. The numerical implementation is based on finite element method (FEM) and step-by-step algorithm. To improve the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm convergence, the velocity equation in the classical PSO method is supplemented by an additional term. This term represents the location of the center of mass of the swarm. The modified particle swarm algorithm (PSO-MC) has been used in the optimization calculations.
Findings
The LSPMSM with drop type bars has better performance and synchronization parameters than motors with circular bars. It is also proved that the used modification of the classical PSO procedure ensures faster convergence for solving the problem of optimization LSPMSM. This modification is particularly useful when the field model of phenomena is used.
Originality/value
The authors noticed that to obtain the maximum power factor and efficiency of the LSPMSM, the designer should take into account dimensions and the placement of the magnets in the designing process. In the authors’ opinion, the equivalent circuit models can be used only at the preliminary stage of the designing of line-start permanent magnet motors.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to propose a novel simple and efficient structure for line-start axial-flux permanent magnet (LSAFPM) synchronous motor, especially regarding the permanent magnets (PMs) demagnetization reduction.
Design/methodology/approach
At first, a primitive raw scheme of the new structure for the LSAFPM motor is introduced. Considering this raw scheme, the levels of irreversible demagnetization in various regions throughout the entire volume of each PM are evaluated using 3 dimensional (3D) finite elements analysis (3D FEA) in full loading condition during startup until reaching steady state. Based on the results of these analyses, the primitive structural scheme is then modified through segmenting (cutting into four pieces) each PM from where the worst irreversible demagnetization levels occurred.
Findings
As will be demonstrated by the results of 3D FEA, the proposed modified structure is not only capable of successful startup and synchronization of the motor but also it considerably reduces the PM demagnetization level. Thus, the performance of the motor is significantly improved.
Originality/value
The demagnetization of PMs is an important effect in PM synchronous motors, which can greatly affect motor performance. Therefore, it is necessary to be considered in the motor design processes. This effect becomes much more significant in the line-start PM motors because the usual high-magnitude startup induction current produces a strong armature-reaction magnetic field, which may cause the PMs to be irreversibly demagnetized. The approach proposed in this paper provides a structural solution to mitigate the PM demagnetization effect and thereby improve the performance of an LSAFPM motor through modifying the structure of the LSAFPM motor according to an FEA-based PM demagnetization analysis. As a considerable contribution, in this analysis, the variation of demagnetization level between different areas inside each PM is computed and is considered as a basis for proposing an appropriate structural modification to mitigate the PM demagnetization effect as much as possible.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to present the influence of inter-turn short circuit faults (ITSF) on electromagnetic vibration in high-voltage line-starting permanent magnet synchronous motor (HVLSPMSMS).
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, the ampere–conductor wave model of HVLSPMSM after ITSF is established. Second, a mathematical model of the magnetic field after ITSF is established, and the influence law of the ITSF on the air-gap magnetic field is analyzed. Further, the mathematical expression of the electromagnetic force density is established based on the Maxwell tensor method. The impact of HVLSPMSM torque ripple frequency, radial electromagnetic force spatial–temporal distribution and rotor unbalanced magnetic tension force by ITSF is revealed. Finally, the electromagnetic–mechanical coupling model of HVLSPMSM is established, and the vibration spectra of the motor with different degrees of ITSF are solved by numerical calculation.
Findings
In this study, it is found that the 2np order flux density harmonics and (2 N + 1) p order electromagnetic forces are not generated when ITSF occurs in HVLSPMSM.
Originality/value
By analyzing the multi-harmonics of HVLSPMSM after ITSF, this paper provides a reliable method for troubleshooting from the perspective of vibration and torque fluctuation and rotor unbalanced electromagnetic force.

Abstract
Purpose
A large number of high-frequency harmonic voltages exist in the output voltage of the inverter, which will affect the performance of the motor. The purpose of this paper is to obtain the influence of high frequency harmonic voltage on the performance of the line start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM) and reveal the mechanism of influence. The research results can provide help for the design of LSPMSM driven by inverter drives.
Design/methodology/approach
First, the actual output voltage data of the inverter is collected, and then the fundamental voltage and high frequency harmonic voltage data can be obtained by performing the fast Fourier transformation method on the voltage data. Second, the finite element model is established. During the finite element calculation, the obtained fundamental voltage and the main harmonic voltage components are used as the voltage source. To research the effect of high frequency harmonic voltage on the performance of motor, a reference group without high frequency harmonic voltage is set up, which is used to compare and analyze the effect of high-frequency harmonics on the performance of the motor. To verify the correctness of the model, a prototype based on the model parameters is manufactured, and then the back EMF experiment and load experiment are performed. The test data and calculation results are compared and analyzed.
Findings
The coupling relationship between high frequency time harmonic magnetic field and low frequency space harmonic magnetic field is obtained. The stator copper loss and rotor eddy-current loss are calculated and analyzed under normal supply voltage and abnormal supply voltage, and the influence mechanism is revealed

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to execute the efficiency analysis of the selected metaheuristic algorithms (MAs) based on the investigation of analytical functions and investigation optimization processes for permanent magnet motor.
Design/methodology/approach
A comparative performance analysis was conducted for selected MAs. Optimization calculations were performed for as follows: genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), bat algorithm, cuckoo search algorithm (CS) and only best individual algorithm (OBI). All of the optimization algorithms were developed as computer scripts. Next, all optimization procedures were applied to search the optimal of the line-start permanent magnet synchronous by the use of the multi-objective objective function.
Findings
The research results show, that the best statistical efficiency (mean objective function and standard deviation [SD]) is obtained for PSO and CS algorithms. While the best results for several runs are obtained for PSO and GA. The type of the optimization algorithm should be selected taking into account the duration of the single optimization process. In the case of time-consuming processes, algorithms with low SD should be used.
Originality/value
The new proposed simple nondeterministic algorithm can be also applied for simple optimization calculations. On the basis of the presented simulation results, it is possible to determine the quality of the compared MAs.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to develop a multi-material topology optimization method for permanent magnet-assisted synchronous reluctance motors.
Design/methodology/approach
In the proposed method, the optimization procedure consists of two steps. In the first step, the entire rotor area was selected for the design region and the distribution of the core and air materials was optimized. In the second step, the design region was limited to the air region of the former solution and the distribution of magnets and cores or magnets and air was optimized.
Findings
Because of the two-step process of the proposed method, the design parameters can be reduced compared to the conventional method. As a result, this study can prevent the solution space from becoming more complex and superior solutions can be founded effectively.
Research limitations/implications
Since limited case study is denoted in this paper, much more case studies, for example, three-dimensional optimization problems, are needed to be discussed.
Practical implications
The optimal solutions obtained by the proposed method have a smaller magnet volume and higher average torque than that of the conventional method.
Originality/value
In the proposed methods, optimization methodology, which consists of two-steps process, is differed from the conventional method.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to elaborate an algorithm and the computer code for the optimization of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) including the shaft torque, the cogging torque, the total harmonic distortion factor of the back EMF and magnet volume into compromise objective function.
Design/methodology/approach
The mathematical model of the device includes the magnetic field equations with the nonlinearity of the magnetic core taken into account. The numerical implementation is based on the finite element method (FEM) and time stepping procedure. The genetic algorithm has been applied for the optimization. The comprehensive computer code containing the FEM model and optimization procedures have been elaborated.
Findings
Very important problem at formulating the optimization task is the choice of the functional parameters which constitute the objective and constraint functions. In the paper it has been shown that uncritical constructing the objective function could lead to irrational variants of the designed object. Authors pointed out (Knypiński et al., 2013) that connecting the shaft torque and the cogging torque simultaneously into the one compromise objective function generates ineffective operation of the optimization algorithm and often also leads to the non-optimal result.
Originality/value
Authors proved that in case of multi-criterion objective function composed of terms which have very different impact on this function value (i.e. very diverse sensitivity of the objective function for these terms is observed) than the optimization process can be significantly distorted. Therefore, decomposition of the optimization process into two stages has been proposed. Some of the parameters (e.g. cogging torque) have been excluded from the first stage of the process. The two stage algorithm has been successfully implemented and tested on the example of PMSM machine.
