Abstract

Purpose

Based on the perspective of knowledge management capability, this paper aims to reveal the internal mechanism of the digital empowerment of mobile social platforms to improve the operational performance of Chinese traditional retail enterprises. Such improvements have crucial theoretical value and practical implications for Chinese traditional retail enterprises to achieve transformation and sustainable development.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applied the typical analysis method, selected China’s leading mobile social platform, WeChat, as a typical case, and observed and analyzed the public data of the traditional retail industry and social platforms and interviews with relevant enterprises. On this basis, this study used the inductive and deductive methods of qualitative research to conduct an in-depth analysis of the mechanism by which WeChat’s digital empowerment improves the operational performance of Chinese traditional retail enterprises. It also discussed the critical role and path knowledge management capabilities play in this mechanism.

Findings

This research demonstrated that mobile social platforms empower Chinese traditional retail enterprises to build diversified digital channels, enhance the knowledge acquisition capability of enterprises and thus improve their performance; empower Chinese traditional retail enterprises to build digital community networks, enhance the knowledge diffusion capability of enterprises and thus improve their performance; and empower Chinese traditional retail enterprises to integrate online and offline businesses, enhance the knowledge integration capability of enterprises and thus improve their performance.

Research limitations/implications

This study clarifies the internal mechanism of how the digital empowerment of mobile social platforms can improve the performance of Chinese traditional retail enterprises. This mechanism implies that knowledge management capabilities (knowledge acquisition, diffusion and integration capability) are the underlying logic for Chinese traditional retail enterprises to achieve higher performance levels. This has important practical implications for managers of Chinese traditional retail enterprises to leverage the digital infrastructure of mobile social platforms to achieve the sustainable development of enterprises.

Originality/value

This study provides an in-depth analysis of how the traditional retail industry uses digital social platforms to improve operational performance from the perspective of knowledge management capabilities, which can further promote the theoretical research and practical development of digitalization and knowledge management. At the same time, this study explored the research on the operational performance of Chinese traditional retail enterprises from the perspective of knowledge management capabilities and expanded the research on knowledge management in related fields. The authors have initially sorted out the impact of knowledge management capabilities on the operational performance of Chinese traditional retail enterprises in the digital era. This will help better understand the role and function of knowledge management in strategic transformation and expand the application of knowledge management theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This article attempts to begin the process of removing the cloak of causal ambiguity by examining the role that knowledge management has in the creation of the wide variety of competitive advantages found in some organizations. Specifically, this article aims to extend understanding in the field of knowledge management by examining how knowledge management can affect organizational performance, and by examining one possible determinant of an organization's capacity to manage knowledge.

Design/methodology/approach

Reviews literature on resources‐advantage theory of the firm, social capital and knowledge management to propose ways within the organization to improve their ability to manage knowledge and achieve sustained superior performance. The paper is structured around the following constructs: resource‐advantage theory of the firm, social capital, and knowledge management.

Findings

Describes the relationship between social capital and knowledge management and how both help organizations achieve a sustained superior performance within the market. Suggests that organizations with high levels of social capital have more knowledge‐management capabilities than organizations with low levels of social capital.

Research limitations/implications

This article extends prior research of knowledge management by proposing how social capital can positively impact the ability of organizations to manage knowledge.

Practical implications

Since resources within all businesses are relatively limited, and particularly so when the business is small relative to its competitors, the revelation that social capital can lead to more effective knowledge management makes the decision to support and nurture social‐capital development much more credible.

Originality/value

Because there is no existing literature that has examined the relationship between social capital, knowledge management, and organizational performance, this paper provides a foundation for future studies that examine the relationship between social capital and knowledge management.

Abstract

Measuring the business benefits of knowledge management is difficult. Even more so for public sector agencies whose outcomes are social benefits, rather than simple profit. Describes an approach for measuring the performance of knowledge management strategies for a public sector agency in Victoria, Australia. Knowledge management is defined as those actions which support collaboration and integration. Two models are presented for measuring knowledge management performance and knowledge management behaviours: a performance framework based on the balanced scorecard approach, and a behaviour framework that identifies levels of practice demonstrated by individuals. The Knowledge Management Performance Scorecard maps the objectives for knowledge management across the balanced scorecard’s key result areas The Knowledge Management Behaviour Framework identifies seven levels of knowledge management skills for demonstrating collaborative behaviour. The framework also outlines what might be typical behaviours of managers and the roles they would assume in relation to individuals at each level.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the detailed content and research framework of a knowledge management audit, from the view of operation flow based on a cognition summary of knowledge management audit proposed by many scholars and organizations, in order to put forward some references for effective implementation of an organization knowledge management project.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper carries out a multi‐perspective analysis of the cognition of knowledge management audit summarizes the similarities and differences between the different viewpoints, also a contrasting analysis on the method proposed by various scholars and organizations from the point of view of flow, and then constructs the conceptive framework of knowledge management audit.

Findings

Knowledge management audit is the first important step in a knowledge management project and includes four phases: preparation, analysis, implementation, and summary. Its primary content involves knowledge management environment audit, knowledge property audit, knowledge management ability audit and knowledge management performance audit, and its main modules consist of knowledge demand analysis, knowledge inventory analysis, knowledge map and knowledge flow analysis.

Research limitations/implications

The paper provides a theoretical construction, but has not conducted a case study. In future research development, the framework of the paper will be improved through the case analysis of organization knowledge management practice.

Practical implications

By utilizing the research framework and method of the paper, an organization may understand rapidly the basic content of a knowledge management audit, implement an effective knowledge management audit to help improve organization (including non‐profit organization) performance and implement a knowledge management strategy.

Originality/value

The paper provides a framework for implementing a knowledge management audit.

Abstract

The intranet has emerged as one of today's most effective tools for knowledge management. This article reports on the extent to which three South African academic libraries, selected by means of the purposive sampling method, utilise the intranet as a knowledge management tool. Based on the literature, knowledge management and an intranet are briefly defined. The advantages of the intranet as a knowledge management tool as well as the content of an intranet are discussed. The opinions about knowledge management and the utilisation of the intranet as a knowledge management tool in the three academic libraries are weighed up against the findings in the literature. It is clear that a strong awareness exists of the importance of knowledge management and the value of the intranet as a knowledge management tool. However, the potential of the intranet as a knowledge management tool is not utilised fully.

Abstract

Purpose

Recently, the demise of the dot.com mania, coupled with slow economic growth has caused organizations to cut costs in an attempt to improve efficiency and the bottom line. Discontinuing or suspending knowledge management efforts and disbanding the chief knowledge officers' (CKOs) role is one common response from most organizations faced with these cost and efficiency pressures. The purpose of this paper is to describe why firms choose to cut knowledge management efforts and point to the deleterious long‐term effects of this course of action.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach is based on discussions with executives.

Findings

The paper highlights three common reasons why firms choose to cut knowledge management efforts, namely: knowledge management is seen as a luxury, not a necessity; knowledge management is subsumed under information technology methods; and investment in knowledge management does not offer immediate results. Moreover, the paper argues that cutting knowledge management efforts does more harm than good for a corporation in the long run.

Originality/value

The paper describes techniques that CKOs should employ to gain support of their executive peers.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to find out teachers' perception about the behaviors of their school leaders with regard to knowledge management, and the changes in teachers' opinion considering their sex, age, educational level, experiment and tenure.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample of the research is primary schools teachers in Edirne, Turkey. A total of 430 questionnaires were evaluated. The scale developed to identify elementary school teachers' perception about knowledge management practices at their schools is based on four other different scales: “Know‐all 50: Knowledge Management Assessment”, “Knowledge Management Framework Assessment Exercise”, “Assessing Readiness for Managing Knowledge Assets”, and “Working with Knowledge”.

Findings

Findings of the research suggest that there are seven existing sub‐dimensions of knowledge management at schools in Turkey, namely: leadership, cultural structure, knowledge hubs and centers, tacit knowledge, explicit knowledge, knowledge vision, and learning culture. In addition to this, there is a significant relationship between the different sub‐dimensions of knowledge management and whether teachers have e‐mail addresses of their own, their schools have internet connection (for external knowledge), web site, computer network (for internal knowledge) and whether the school has a subscription to professional publications.

Originality/value

The researches in different countries show that knowledge management has nine sub‐dimensions but in Turkey there are seven. This scale needs to be applied to different organizational settings in order to be validated nationwide.

Purpose

This article seeks to clarify the role of knowledge management in innovation as an aid to addressing this complexity. The article seeks to identify the drivers for application of knowledge management in innovation. It also details the nature of the role of knowledge management in innovation as well as its value proposition.

Design/methodology/approach

The methodology used was literature research and some personal experiences and interpretations.

Findings

In the fast changing business world of today, innovation has become the mainstay of organizations. The nature of global economic growth has been changed by the speed of innovation, which has been made possible by rapidly evolving technology, shorter product lifecycles and a higher rate of new product development. The complexity of innovation has been increased by growth in the amount of knowledge available to organizations.

Originality/value

Innovation is extremely dependent on the availability of knowledge and therefore the complexity created by the explosion of richness and reach of knowledge has to be recognized and managed to ensure successful innovation.

Purpose

Generative AI and more specifically ChatGPT has brought a revolution in the lives  of people by providing them with required knowledge that it has learnt from an exponentially large knowledge base. In this viewpoint, we are initiating the debate and offer the first step towards Generative AI based knowledge management systems in organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is a viewpoint and develops a conceptual foundation using existing literature on how ChatGPT can enhance the KM capability based on Nonaka’s SECI model. It further supports the concept by collecting data from a public sector univesity in Hong Kong to strenghten our argument of ChatGPT mediated knowledge management system.

Findings

We posit that all four processes, that is Socialization, Externalization, Combination and Internalization can significantly improve when integrated with ChatGPT. ChatGPT users are, in general, satisfied with the use of ChatGPT being capable of facilitating knowledge generation and flow in organizations.

Research limitations/implications

The study provides a conceptual foundation to further the knowledge on how ChatGPT can be integrated within organizations to enhance the knowledge management capability of organizations. Further, it develops an understanding on how managers and executives can use ChatGPT for effective knowledge management through improving the four processes of Nonaka’s SECI model.

Originality/value

This is one of the earliest studies on the linkage of knowledge management with ChatGPT and lays a foundation for ChatGPT mediated knowledge management system in organizations.
