Applies a parallel backward‐chaining technique to a rule‐based expert system on a shared‐memory multiprocessor system. The condition for a processor to split up its search tree (task‐node) and generate new OR nodes is based on the level in the goal tree at which the task‐node is found. The results indicate satisfactory speed‐up performance for a small number of processors (< 10) and a reasonably large number of rules.

This chapter reviews some of the important factors in the professional development of teachers of young children. It discusses how important teacher quality is for student outcomes. The chapter also discusses the many factors that go into the development of quality teachers. This chapter also introduces the history of the Early Childhood Educator Professional Development program financed through grants from the United States Department of Education. This program has focused on creating state of the art professional development programs across many U.S. contexts.

C'est un lieu commun que de réaffirmer ici l'importance croissante des mouvements touristiques dans le monde actuel sur les plans économique, social, culturel ou politique. Dans le domaine économique seulement, leur développement entraˆne des conséquences décisives tant sur les relations économiques internationales (le problème des balances des paiements se pose différemment maintenant que les échanges de personnes viennent compléter les échanges de marchandises) que sur l'orientation des activités économiques internes (citons, par exemple, les investissements touristiques — hôtellerie ou moyens de transport — les changements de la consommation par suite de la croissance dans les budgets familiaux du poste distractions et voyages — l'amélioration du niveau de vie — le développement du secteur tertiaire, commerce et services — l'urbanisation, dont le tourisme est, en tant qu'évasion hors des grandes agglomérations, une des conséquences, etc.). Et en face de ce fait: il n'est pas un secteur de l'activité économique qui ne soit transformé, plus ou moins profondément, par l'essor du tourisme — une constatation amère: ce phénomène décisif, économique, social, démographique, culturel n'occupe encore qu'une place tout à fait insignifiante, quand elle n'est pas nulle, dans l'enseignement supérieur de la plupart des pays. Il serait cependant très désirable qu'une meilleure connaissance de ces phénomènes, sans nul doute appelés à poursuivre encore leur développement, soit plus largement répandue parmi les jeunes destinés à former les cadres supérieurs, c'est‐à‐dire l'élite des nations. De ce point de vue, le bilan que l'on peut dresser aujourd'hui ne laisse pas d'être fort affligeant.

Man at the Crossroads draws earlier themes together; the author makes the case for rejecting determinism and the “operant conditioning” of the Skinner school in favour of the moral progress of autonomous man through adherence to traditional ethical values.

Le choix du thème général de ce 35e congrès de l'AIEST n'a pas été laissé au hasard. En analysant les tendances évolutives de la demande touristique, il s'agissait, comme le soulignait le président Kaspar dans son introduction, de prolonger, en une période de crise et de bouleversement de nos sociétés, non seulement la discussion sur l'évolution du tourisme en général, mais d'ajouter un volet spécial celui de la demande touristique, du comportement du touriste vu sous ses aspects socioculturels et économiques.

La Revue de Tourisme a déjà consacré tout un numéro à ce sujet (n° 3/1950). Si nous y revenons, c'est surtout pour les motifs suivants: D'abord, le sujet en soi est à peu près inépuisable. Ensuite, il s'agit d'en donner maintenant une vue d'ensemble et d'en examiner d'autres aspects. Enfin, l'occasion nous en est directement fournie par la publication récente de l'ouvrage cité ci‐après de M. J. G. Ramaker (Tourisme et transports) et par l'exposé que, sous le même titre, l'auteur de ces lignes a fait le 11 février 1955 dans un cours d'instruction organisé par la Swissair à Zurich pour son personnel, avec le concours de l'Ecole suisse des hautes études économiques et administratives de Saint‐Gall.

CONSTRUCTORS of metal aeroplanes since 1910, Messrs. Breguet have recently turned out a new machine which represents a complete breakaway from accepted practice. After acquiring a thorough experience of light alloy construction in the past ten years with their world‐known Breguet 19, they have been led to reconsider the problem of design from the very beginning and to introduce an entirely new conception.

Entrepreneurs frequently tout how their ideas and innovations will become the “next big thing.” Yet, many such innovations – after the initial excitement and an upsurge in expectations – may experience a bust following the initial boom. We develop a conceptual framework to theorize how entrepreneurs may attract attention and garner support from wider stakeholders through the use of framing strategies. Yet, these framing activities will also invite more diverse participants and lead to an increasingly incoherent and imbalanced frame at the collective level, making it challenging to maintain resonance among key stakeholders, in turn hampering the healthy development of the nascent market in the long run. Looking beyond just the positive and short-term effects of cultural entrepreneurship on market emergence, we offer a more balanced view by examining the potential downsides of entrepreneurial legitimacy-building strategies.

This chapter examines the potential and barriers for evidence-based practices in Californian schools. In a large and complex school system, the state plays an important role in legitimating the use of certain types of evidence, but evidence-based practices are heavily determined by the resources, actors, and prevailing cultures in a local district environment. Until recently, high-stakes accountability policies mandated improvements in student test performance and intrusive interventions for failure. In recent years, the state has shifted to a different accountability approach that emphasizes local control and the use of multiple measures of school performance to pursue continuous improvement around locally developed goals and interventions. Amid this context, two stories arise about evidence-based practices in California. In one story, a set of major and highly touted districts have led the way in demonstrating evidence-informed continuous improvement district-wide. In these districts, the new state accountability approach, enabling leadership, long-term commitments to collective learning, networked opportunities to learn, and access to elite external expertise have contributed to fairly extensive practices of disciplined team problem-solving involving rich data. In a second story, schools and districts that face resource scarcity, high turnover, and conflict and in which past high-stakes accountability left a deep imprint on prevailing norms and routines, leaders and teachers have had difficulty establishing a conducive context for collective learning. However, given ingrained practices and limited absorptive capacity, it is not entirely clear how to enable productive evidence-based practices in such contexts.
