Building on the enactment perspective and past work on the self‐fulfilling prophecy, this paper explores how organizational decline can be enacted through self‐fulfilling prophecies of decline. We present two self‐fulfilling prophecy‐based models of organizational decline, one in which decline is enacted unintentionally through the predictions of an organization's managers, and a second in which decline is enacted unintentionally through the predictions of external constituencies. We articulate propositions that capture the dynamics of each model and that are intended as a platform for future empirical research. We also discuss the implications of our theoretical framework for future theory development on the causes of organizational decline, and offer suggestions for managers who wish to avoid organizational decline.

The Union list of microfilms: cumulation 1949–1959 is now available from J.W. Edwards Inc, Ann Arbor, Michigan. This is the last Cumulation which the Philadelphia Bibliographical Center and Union Library Catalogue will publish. With the completion of this Cumulation the Center has carried the burden for total microfilm listings for exactly twenty years without financial support of any kind. Three major developments: the tremendous flood of microfilm accessions among American libraries, the increasing desire to divide materials by types, and the demand to expand the list to include all kinds of photo‐reproduction (i.e. microprint, microcard, etc.) have forced the Center to cease publication with Cumulation 1949–1959. Because of worldwide use of this Union List, an account of its rise, development, and demise may be of interest to librarians and scholars.

The use of the photo‐offset or photolithographic printing process for reproducing research, reference, and educational materials in limited quantities has been demonstrated conclusively during the period of the war.

The foundation collection of the printed books now forming the Library of the British Museum was that of Sir Hans Sloane. This comprised about 40,000 volumes. To it was added in 1759 the Royal collection, begun in the time of Henry VII and inherited by George II from his predecessors on the throne.

On the other hand the people of Canada have lived essentially on the same type of diet as that employed in the northern United States. It includes all the products of field and garden with which we are familiar, together with meats in liberal amounts and dairy products in moderate quantities. The latter is the kind of diet which supports the civilization of England, and also the most progressive European countries as well as that of the northern United States and all other parts of the world which have been peopled by colonization from European stock, wherever the climate will permit.

Develops a classification of executive information systems. (EIS). EIS implementations cluster into four distinct groups, called the 4 Cs: Conglomerate; control and monitoring; competitive and intelligence; communication and efficiency. Explores the characteristics of the classes within this taxonomy. Argues, among other things, that the objective use of EIS can be considered as a strategic management aid to top management teams.

This paper describes a series of tests of remotely piloted vehicles (RPV) and full scale aircraft from which most of the performance information and selected dynamic characteristics normally required for aircraft operation can be obtained. The main goal of the paper is to compare corresponding characteristics of RPVs and full scale aircraft and establish if RPV testing can help and influence an early stage design project in order to optimise its aerodynamic configuration and predict its static and dynamic characteristics. This paper presents basic similarity transformations, including mass scale, force scale, power scale, linear acceleration scale, Reynolds number scale etc. as functions of linear scale. It was found that tests in steady conditions are difficult to perform, time‐consuming, and do not offer significant advantages over the classical wind tunnel tests. RPV tests in unsteady conditions are much easier to perform and quite accurate.

The red bead experiment (RBE) is very well‐known in total quality management. It was designed by Dr W.E. Deming to show managers several lessons in management and sampling. The RBE has evolved over several decades and now has an accepted standard format. The RBE also serves as an introduction to control charts which are an important tool in statistical quality control. Surprisingly very little is known about the statistical properties of the RBE. This is most likely due to the fact that the RBE involves mechanical sampling and so is much more complicated than probability sampling. New methods are given for statistical analysis when mechanical sampling is involved (e.g. mechanical sampling of non‐uniform output in a manufacturing environment). This approach has specific applications to control charts which are a major tool in quality control. In a rigorous analysis, it is shown that p, the sample proportion of red beads in the RBE, is an unbiased estimator of the RBE process defect rate. Expressions are also found for the variance of p, enabling the calculation of control chart limits. Some of the techniques used can be applied to other mechanical sampling situations which may at first viewing seem intractable.

A few years ago, in an effort to promote co‐operation between the two professional associations of librarians in Ireland, a Liaison Committee, consisting of members nominated by the Council of the Library Association of Ireland and members nominated by the Committee of the Northern Ireland Branch of the Library Association was formed. The first fruit of its endeavours was found in the establishment of an Annual Joint‐Conference of the two bodies, the first one being held at Portrush, in Northern Ireland in 1963.
