Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from 418 Thai employees who worked from home during the nationwide lockdowns at two time points. The hypotheses were tested and analyzed by means of a confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and a bootstrapping procedure.

Findings

The results indicate that the three work-from-home stressors significantly cause emotional exhaustion and that these stressors are negatively associated with job embeddedness and life satisfaction via the mediation of emotional exhaustion.

Research limitations/implications

To reduce error in parameter estimation due to self-report data, future research could use a more rigorous longitudinal design with a longer time lag and collect data from multiple sources.

Practical implications

Realizing how critical situations shape the workplace would help organizations understand the issues concerning a remote work approach and create more applicable interventions to improve employees' retention and wellbeing.

Originality/value

This study reinforces the application of COR in times of crisis and extends the traditional JD-R model beyond the normal work context.

Abstract

Purpose

Nanotechnology (NT) advancements in personal protective textiles (PPT) or personal protective equipment (PPE) have alleviated spread and transmission of this highly contagious viral disease, and enabled enhancement of PPE, thereby fortifying antiviral behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Review of a series of state of the art research papers on the subject matter.

Findings

This paper expounds on novel nanotechnological advancements in polymeric textile composites, emerging applications and fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Research limitations/implications

As a panacea to “public droplet prevention,” textiles have proven to be potentially effective as environmental droplet barriers (EDBs).

Practical implications

PPT in form of healthcare materials including surgical face masks (SFMs), gloves, goggles, respirators, gowns, uniforms, scrub-suits and other apparels play critical role in hindering the spreading of COVID-19 and other “oral-respiratory droplet contamination” both within and outside hospitals.

Social implications

When used as double-layers, textiles display effectiveness as SFMs or surgical-fabrics, which reduces droplet transmission to <10 cm, within circumference of ∼0.3%.

Originality/value

NT advancements in textiles through nanoparticles, and sensor integration within textile materials have enhanced versatile sensory capabilities, robotics, flame retardancy, self-cleaning, electrical conductivity, flexibility and comfort, thereby availing it for health, medical, sporting, advanced engineering, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, military, automobile, food and agricultural applications, and more. Therefore, this paper expounds on recently emerging trends in nanotechnological influence in textiles for engineering and fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyse the trend of publication in the field of psychological ownership (PO) in marketing by looking at the previous research papers. The research pinpoints the key concepts, methodology, analytical approach and the structure of PO that could open up future research path in this area of research.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper provides a bibliometric analysis of PO in marketing by using performance analysis and science mapping with data extracted from Scopus database using VOSviewer software.

Findings

Results show the trend of publications in the field of PO and found out the main themes related to the PO and also provide future research avenues for further exploration by scholars.

Research limitations/implications

The study could help researchers, firms and marketers to predict functioning of customer’s mind and their decision-making, thus enabling organizations to create a strong targeted marketing strategy to attract and engage customers.

Originality/value

The present study provides a bird’s view of psychological ownership in marketing context by applying bibliometric analysis tool. Also, the rigorous literature investigation links and integrates isolated diverse knowledge of PO that aids in developing meaningful new insights for firms and marketers.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on social cognitive theory, this study aims to explore the influence of supervisor bottom-line mentality (SBLM) on employee knowledge behavior (knowledge territorial behavior and knowledge sabotage behavior). The study first investigates the role of an ethical decision-making mechanism (moral disengagement) in mediating this relationship. In addition, it considers the possible boundary conditions to supplement research on the influence of SBLM in the knowledge management field.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected 256 data points from employees across three stages using convenience sampling. The authors then tested the proposed hypothesis using hierarchical regression and bootstrap methods.

Findings

The results demonstrated that SBLM promotes employees’ moral disengagement, leading to more knowledge territorial behavior and knowledge sabotage behavior. Furthermore, high power distance orientation among employees exacerbates the ill effects of SBLM according to the first stage of a moderated mediation model. Employees with such an orientation are more likely to respond to a SBLM by exhibiting a higher level of moral disengagement, thus increasing their knowledge territorial behavior and knowledge sabotage behavior.

Originality/value

Research on the influence of SBLM in the knowledge management field is limited. This study not only clarifies the relationships between SBLM and two types of knowledge behavior (knowledge territorial behavior and knowledge sabotage behavior) but also enriches the research on the antecedents of these two types of knowledge behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the financial well-being and social capital of Indian retirees. The paper investigates the extent of subjective financial well-being, the dependence on debts and the extent of bridging and bonding social capital of retirees with similar retirement pensions to understand the main issues they face.

Design/methodology/approach

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 32 retired government schoolteachers. Two individuals transcribed the interviews after a pilot study, which helped remove repetitive responses. After ensuring the authenticity of the transcripts, the data was analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis.

Findings

The study's key findings reveal that retirees, armed with a clear understanding of their retirement income, exhibit a sense of financial control. At the same time, the presence of debt and the potential for high healthcare expenses adversely impact their subjective financial well-being. In terms of social capital, retirees predominantly rely on support from close-knit communities of friends and neighbors, as against their children. Additionally, retirees who migrate from their native places encounter challenges in establishing bridging social capital.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on financial well-being, specifically within the context of vulnerable groups such as retirees in India, where the absence of a state-supported retirement system adds a distinctive dimension. Against the backdrop of India's traditional societal framework, the research extends the existing literature by delving into the nuanced effects of evolving social dynamics on the social capital of retirees.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to understand the link between psychological ownership and organizational innovation in family businesses. The research also explored the mediating effect of knowledge transfer alongside the moderating role of governance practices.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 116 family businesses across India took part in the study. Data were collected with the help of a structured questionnaire supplied to the seniormost family member of each firm. The data were analyzed by using the moderated mediation model analysis in R.

Findings

The findings indicate that psychological ownership is a key driver of organizational innovation in family businesses. The transfer of knowledge mediates the relationship between psychological ownership and organizational innovation. Moreover, governance practices of the businesses moderate the association between psychological ownership and knowledge transfer, and its downstream consequences on organizational innovation.

Originality/value

While previous research has explored various aspects of nurturing innovation, the present study explores the effect of psychological ownership in the context of family businesses in India. This study also gives insights into how knowledge transfer and governance practices work together to influence innovation in these businesses.

Abstract

Purpose

Knowledge hiding in organizations is perceived as counterproductive knowledge behavior that is negatively related to employees creativity and job performance, but positively affect workplace deviance and turnover intention. The extent to which knowledge hiding develops is largely determined by personal characteristics and the work environment. However, there is a lack of research on the relationship between individual intellectual capital and knowledge hiding. This study aims to investigate the underlying mediation and moderation mechanisms of the relationship between individual human capital and knowledge hiding. The study explores the mediating role of pressure of helping others and negative emotions, and the moderating role of perceived organizational politics.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected in two waves, in January and February 2024, from 424 Polish employees with high intellectual capital. Partial least squares path modeling was used to test the research hypotheses.

Findings

Individual human capital is positively related to the pressure of helping others and negatively related to negative emotions. Pressure of helping others mediates the relationship between individual human capital and knowledge hiding. Contrary to expectations, negative emotions do not mediate the relationship between the pressure of helping others and knowledge hiding. The interaction of individual human capital and perceived organizational politics is positively related to knowledge hiding.

Practical implications

To decrease knowledge hiding, managers should promote meritocracy in the organization and reduce employees’ behaviors that are selfish and based on political games. Employees with high human capital should be provided with support to relieve the pressure of helping others and the negative emotions which are associated with the pressure of helping others.

Originality/value

Based on psychological ownership and reactance theories, to the best of the author’s knowledge, this study is the first to explore the relationships between individual human capital and knowledge hiding.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to identify the dimensions of destination psychological ownership (DPO) from tourists’ perspectives and to develop a reliable and valid measurement scale.

Design/methodology/approach

The mixed method has been applied in this study for the development of a scale to measure psychological ownership (PO) of tourists. The first stage includes identifying the PO dimensions of tourists toward the tourist destinations through in-depth interviews with experts (university professors, managers and experts in the tourism industry). Theme analysis was applied to analyze the data in this stage. A quantitative survey was conducted among tourists during the second stage. Accordingly, a questionnaire was designed and its reliability and validity were investigated. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used to examine the structural model and its validity.

Findings

The findings revealed that the DPO from tourists’ perspectives includes six dimensions for the sense of attachment, responsibility, the sense of trust, the sense of honor, the sense of gratification and self-identity toward tourist destinations. The validity of the conceptual model was confirmed according to the results of the quantitative section of the study.

Originality/value

The present study is one of the limited numbers of studies coping with PO, especially in the field of tourism, from the view of the consumer. The present study identifies the dimensions of the DPO of tourists and develops an instrument to measure them. Therefore, the developed questionnaire can be used as a valid and reliable instrument to measure the DPO in future research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to address the mixed predictions about the relationship between general skills training and turnover intention of early career graduates by examining the mediating mechanisms of perceived organizational support (POS) and job satisfaction (JS) through which this relationship might be enacted. This study adopts organizational support theory as the guiding theory and examines the concept of POS as critical for predicting and explaining relationships in the conceptual framework.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative survey method was used on a sample of 147 Chinese early career graduate trainees. Analysis was conducted using partial least square-based structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The main finding is that participation in general skills training (PGST) does not directly impact turnover intention, rather POS is a mechanism through which this negative relationship operates. This study also found significant evidence for serial mediation by POS on PGST and its relationship with turnover intention. Importantly, JS only has an effect on turnover intention when in the presence of serial mediation by POS.

Research limitations/implications

Cross-sectional study of a small survey sample. Nonetheless, the findings have major implications for research theories on the relationship of general skills training with employee turnover.

Social implications

PGST does not directly impact turnover intention, rather POS is a mechanism through which this negative relationship operates.

Originality/value

This research emphasizes the important role of POS in the relationship between early career graduate trainees’ PGST and their turnover intentions.

Abstract

Knowledge of how social movements move, diffuse, and expand collective action events is central to movement scholarship and activist practice. Our purpose is to extend sociological knowledge about how movements (sometimes) diffuse and amplify insurgent actions, that is, how movements move. We extend movement diffusion theory by drawing a conceptual analogue with military theory and practice applied to the case of the organized and highly disciplined nonviolent Nashville civil rights movement in the late 1950s and early 1960s. We emphasize emplacement in a base-mission extension model whereby a movement base is built in a community establishing a social movement school for inculcating discipline and performative training in cadre who engage in insurgent operations extended from that base to outlying events and campaigns. Our data are drawn from secondary sources and semi-structured interviews conducted with participants of the Nashville civil rights movement. The analytic strategy employs a variant of the “extended case method,” where extension is constituted by movement agents following paths from base to outlying campaigns or events. Evidence shows that the Nashville movement established an exemplary local movement base that led to important changes in that city but also spawned traveling movement cadre who moved movement actions in an extensive series of pathways linking the Nashville base to events and campaigns across the southern theater of the civil rights movement. We conclude with theoretical and practical implications.
