Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to elaborate a robust model‐based protective control algorithm for multi‐mass motor drives that are subjected to physical and safety constraints on their variables.

Design/methodology/approach

The algorithm relies on the off‐line computed maximum robust controlled invariant set or its approximation for the given drive system and imposed constraints. It can be used to patch any existing drive control scheme with a firm constraints satisfaction guarantee. The online patch implementation is actually a simple correction of the control signal computed with the existing control scheme, with a mandatory state observer.

Findings

Performance of the patch is tested on a two‐mass drive system in combination with classical two‐mass drive speed controllers – P+I and reduced state controller. All constraints violations that exist in the presented responses obtained without the protection patch are suppressed by using the patch which shows the effectiveness of the approach. A brief implementation analysis shows that a digital signal processor could be used for online implementation of the controller with the protective patch.

Originality/value

Robust invariant sets theory is efficiently and effectively used in a new application area – protection of multi‐mass electrical drives.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on knowledge of the variables of a link system and their interrelation, the purpose of this paper is to show how it is possible to specify all the objects relating to dependency chains of a discrete system which are essential in systemic analysis of any system.

Design/methodology/approach

An algorithm is designed based on previously developed theoretical concepts which enables the discovery of the aforementioned objects.

Findings

A tool has been developed which is able to analyse any system with given variables and dependencies in a fast and economical manner.

Practical implications

These results can be applied to a number of cases. For example, in the case of an ecosystem, the structural function associated with each species of the ecosystem can be determined, it could be ascertained whether a group of species covered another group of species, whether there is an invariant group of species can be determined, and the orbit of each species analysed.

Originality/value

The algorithm presented in this paper is innovative in that it is a direct transfer of the theoretical results presented in recent publications, and therefore presupposes a different treatment of the qualitative analysis of the system.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a mathematical model to determine invariant sets, set covering, orbits and, in particular, attractors in the set of tourism variables. Analysis was carried out based on an algorithm and applying an interpretation of chaos theory developed in the context of General Systems Theory and Big Data.

Design/methodology/approach

Tourism is one of the most digitalized sectors of the economy, and social networks are an important source of data for information gathering. However, the high levels of redundant information on the Web and the appearance of contradictory opinions and facts produce undesirable effects that must be cross-checked against real data. This paper sets out the causal relationships associated with tourist flows to enable the formulation of appropriate strategies.

Findings

The results can be applied to numerous cases, for example, in the analysis of tourist flows, these findings can be used to determine whether the behaviour of certain groups affects that of other groups, as well as analysing tourist behaviour in terms of the most relevant variables.

Originality/value

The technique presented here breaks with the usual treatment of the tourism topics. Unlike statistical analyses that merely provide information on current data, the authors use orbit analysis to forecast, if attractors are found, the behaviour of tourist variables in the immediate future.

Abstract

Purpose

The authors developed a lesson study innovation for bridging pre-service teachers' experiences in an early methods course and clinical experiences focusing on the development of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). The authors analyze one planning meeting by a lesson study team comprised of four pre-service teachers and one cooperating teacher. The purpose of this research was to determine the nature of documentation during the online planning meeting and how the cooperating teacher facilitated the documentation process.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors used Gueudet and Trouche's (2009) documentation framework to determine the way the lesson study team in our study used all the resources available to plan a lesson. They analyzed the video recordings of the meeting to examine the interplay between material, didactical and mathematical components during the discussions. The material components included the Teacher Desmos Activity Builder and the eTextbook. The didactical components included assessment, scaffolding, multiple representations and problem-solving activities. The mathematical components pertained to systems of linear equations and inequalities with two variables.

Findings

The authors’ findings show that the cooperating teacher performed an invariant set of actions for improving the research lesson and, also, gave recommendations about how to implement the lesson. In facilitating the planning discussions, the cooperating teacher made explicit the relationship between material, didactical and mathematical components. The authors’ work has implications for supporting the preparation of facilitators of online planning sessions during lesson study.

Research limitations/implications

The authors did not have access to the planning meeting where the PSTs created the draft of the research lesson. In addition, they are reporting the observations of only one online meeting.

Originality/value

The authors’ work has implications for supporting the preparation of facilitators of online planning sessions during lesson study.

Stress computation in finite element materially non‐linear analysis is an important problem that has perhaps been receiving less attention than it deserves. Not only does it consume a significant share of total computer time, but also inaccuracies and ‘savings’ thereupon may well jeopardize the gains aimed at by sophisticating elsewhere the numerical strategy. A well established algorithm for stress computation is reviewed in detail, illustrating a number of computational hazards and proposing simple solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to analyze ecological networks from a different viewpoint, using the concepts of orbits, coverage, invariant sets, etc.

Design/methodology/approach

A very simple view of ecosystems is presented, without delving into their multiple properties. Specifically, an ecosystem will be considered a system containing living and non‐living entities whose interrelationships include those of predator‐prey and competition. On interpreting that orbits are associated with ecosystems' direct and indirect paths, it is possible to present a much more conceptual design of ecological networks.

Findings

An ecosystem's two most important relationships, those of predator‐prey and competition, appear to be interconnected with the concepts of coverage, invariance and orbit, with multiple properties.

Originality/value

There are many interesting analyses of ecological networks' indirect effects that develop the quantitative and qualitative theory of ecological networks. What is new in this study is that it is the first dealing with orbits in the field of ecosystems.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on some of the results and definitions provided in the paper “system linkage: structural functions and hierarchies” and adding new definitions that are in keeping with the spirit of the same paper, new results have been obtained that explore the utility of the structural input‐output function.

Design/methodology/approach

Our approach is based principally on the application of graph theory to the study of relationships between variables using specific set theory concepts.

Findings

A result such as the fact that A covers B, for example, can be interpreted in terms of the latter set being formed of direct influences from elements in the former set in relation to one or more than one relationships. Analogously, the invariant set concept may be interpreted as the set maintaining its structure and status, remaining constant with respect to any possible relationships.

Originality/value

From a practical point of view, in the context of the study of networks within an ecosystem, authors (such as Patten et al. and Patten) have demonstrated that indirect effects between the variables of an ecosystem outweigh direct effects. This is the notion that the present authors have borne in mind in order to extend previous results to indirect influences from a discrete perspective.

Abstract

In the present paper, for constructing the minimum risk estimators of state of stochastic systems, a new technique of invariant embedding of sample statistics in a loss function is proposed. This technique represents a simple and computationally attractive statistical method based on the constructive use of the invariance principle in mathematical statistics. Unlike the Bayesian approach, an invariant embedding technique is independent of the choice of priors. It allows one to eliminate unknown parameters from the problem and to find the best invariant estimator, which has smaller risk than any of the well‐known estimators. There exists a class of control systems where observations are not available at every time due to either physical impossibility and/or the costs involved in taking a measurement. In this paper, the problem of how to select the total number of the observations optimally when a constant cost is incurred for each observation taken is discussed. To illustrate the proposed technique, an example is given and comparison between the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), minimum variance unbiased estimator (MVUE), minimum mean square error estimator (MMSEE), median unbiased estimator (MUE), and the best invariant estimator (BIE) is discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to be a first step toward the efficient, yet accurate, solution of detailed combustion fields using the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, where applications are still limited due to both the stiffness of the governing equations and the large amount of fields to solve.

Design/methodology/approach

The suggested methodology for model reduction is developed in the setting of slow invariant manifold construction, including details of the while. The simplest LB equation is used in order to work out the procedure of coupling of the reduced model with the flow solver.

Findings

The proposed method is validated with the 2D simulation of a premixed laminar flame in the hydrogen‐air mixture, where a remarkable computational speedup and memory saving are demonstrated.

Research limitations/implications

Because of the chosen detailed LB model, the flow field may be described with unsatisfactory accuracy: this motivates further investigation in this direction in the near future.

Practical implications

A new framework of simulation of reactive flows is available, based on a coupling between accurate reduced reaction mechanism and the LB representation of the flow phenomena. Hence, the paper includes implications on how to perform accurate reactive flow simulations at a fraction of the cost required in the detailed model.

Originality/value

This paper meets an increasing need to have efficient and accurate numerical tools for modelling complex phenomena, such as pollutant formation during combustion.

Abstract

This research explores the existence of consideration sets as a marketing universal by evaluating consideration set sizes for a shopping good in a cross‐cultural context. Previous studies of marketing universals investigated consumers’ use of product quality signals for shopping goods. This study used two operational definitions of a consideration set and found that both the average number of brands considered and the number of brands tried on were statistically equal for two matched samples in different cultures, supporting the status of consideration sets as a marketing universal.
