Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of fund expense ratio for Malaysia-based international equity funds. An understanding of what these factors are and how they affect a fund’s expense ratio is important given that international funds can be expensive to operate and that fund expenses have negative impact on investors’ returns.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a standard cross-sectional regression model in examining the factors that influence fund expense ratio of international equity funds.

Findings

The findings show that sales charge is positively related to fund expense ratio although it is not included in the expense ratio computation. This suggests that investor could possibly incur additional “hidden cost” since sales charge represents an upfront cost that an investor has already paid at the time of the fund sale. Additionally, funds with aggressive investment objective and frequent portfolio turnover show higher expense ratios than funds with conservative investment objective and less trading activities. There is no evidence that fund size, fund age, and the number of funds in a fund family are significantly related to the fund expense ratio. While the lack of statistical finding for fund size in this study seems inconsistent with the results of the US market in general, the finding is supportive of the Thai equity fund market and thus implying that finding could be country specific.

Research limitations/implications

There is limited availability of international equity funds in Malaysia.

Practical implications

The findings provide useful insights for investors to make informed international fund selection decisions. Expense-conscious investors should pay particular attention to fund’s sales charge, turnover ratio, and its investment objective when selecting funds for investment.

Originality/value

This paper provides first evidence on the determinants of fund expense ratio of Malaysia-based international equity funds.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate not only the performance of Portuguese mutual funds investing in domestic and international equities but also which fund characteristics, such as age, size, family size, expense ratios and flows, influence future performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Fund performance is evaluated over the 2005–2022 period by a robust six-factor model, while the impact of fund characteristics on performance is assessed by a set of fixed-effects panel data regressions with two-way cluster-robust standard errors.

Findings

The results show that, while funds investing in domestic equities predominantly exhibit neutral performance, most international equity funds have significantly negative alphas. The authors document a negative and statistically significant relationship between fund age and performance for all fund categories. Total expense ratios have an inverse relationship with domestic equity fund performance but do not impact the performance of international equity funds significantly. Though fund flows have a neutral effect on performance across the overall period, they are important determinants of both domestic and international funds’ performance in more recent years.

Originality/value

The authors contribute to the literature by carrying out a comprehensive analysis, based on recent and robust methodologies, of the impact of mutual fund characteristics on the future performance of Portuguese equity funds. The research findings serve as a premise for advising investors on how to choose the top-performing funds.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to evaluate the risk‐adjusted performance of US‐based international equity funds using objective statistical measures grounded in modern portfolio theory, and to present the results in a manner which is easily understood by the average investor.

Design/methodology/approach

This study evaluates the performance of 50 large US‐based international equity funds using risk‐adjusted returns during 1994‐2003. In particular, a relatively new risk‐adjusted performance measure (M squared), first proposed by Franco Modigliani and Leah Modigliani in 1997, is used to evaluate these equity funds.

Findings

The empirical results show that the funds with the highest average returns may lose their attractiveness to investors once the degree of risk embedded in the fund has been factored into the analysis. Conversely, some funds, whose average (unadjusted) returns do not stand out, may look very attractive once their low risk is factored into their performance.

Research limitations/implications

It may be worthwhile to examine the effects of factors such as fund manager compensation, service fees, corporate governance metrics, and overweighting in risky countries/regions on the performance of international equity funds.

Practical implications

The evidence presented in this study can be used as input in decision making by investors who are exploring the possibility of participating in the global stock market via international equity funds.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first studies that apply the new M squared measure to evaluate the performance of international equity funds using both domestic and international benchmark indices. Various other performance metrics are also utilized including Sharpe and Treynor measures, and Jensen's Alpha.

Abstract

The vast global unit trust/mutual fund industry was worth more than $16 trillion by the end of June 2005. Over time, investors’ interests seem to have shifted from individual shares to share funds. The unit trust industry in South Africa is no exception. Over the 40‐year period from its inception in 1965 to 2005, the industry has grown from only one fund to 567 different funds, worth more than R345 billion. This study highlights some of the most important changes that have occurred in the South African unit trust industry over the last 40 years. These shifts are compared to changes that the USA mutual fund industry has experienced in the 60 years of its existence. An attempt is then made to answer the question whether South African investors are better off with these changes or not.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the predictability of the US‐based international mutual fund returns by investigating 2,479 daily observations for all categories of international equity, bond and hybrid mutual funds. Further, trading strategies are proposed and tested under different scenario including a proposed regulation by the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Design/methodology/approach

The sample is split and the initial sub sample is used to investigate return patterns of international funds and to develop trading rules based on the predictable return patterns. Trading rules are then tested on the holdout sample.

Findings

Empirical results demonstrate statistically significant predictabilities. Various trading strategies show that the returns of both load and no‐load funds are economically significant beating a buy‐and‐hold strategy. Empirical findings are consistent across the fund categories irrespective of sizes and styles. The tested strategies are profitable even with various limits on frequency of trading, minimum holding periods and even under a recent SEC's proposed regulation. Further, possible contracting and regulatory changes are proposed to improve the efficiency in the mutual fund industry.

Originality/value

The results confirm previous findings of statistically and economically significant regularities from trading strategies that involve following the US markets. A test of SEC's proposed regulation documents that short‐term investors may benefit from active trading strategy even if the SEC's rule is implemented.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the performance of Chinese mutual funds during the period of January 2000 to July 2013. Emerging market funds provide investors with alternative risk exposure for their portfolios. The Chinese market has developed rapidly and differs from developed markets regarding wide range of market and economic characteristics, including size, liquidity, and regulation. The performance of these funds is investigated by using various risk adjusted measures. The study also compares performances of mutual fund subgroups and explains the factors influencing their performances.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an empirical paper using various risk performance measures. These measures include the Sharpe ratio, Information ratio, Treynor ratio, M-squared and Jensen’s α. The data comprises 1,037 funds. These funds are further divided into ten subgroup of funds based on their classification: equity (484); aggressive allocation (95 funds); conservative allocation (18 funds); moderate allocation (85 funds); aggressive bond (92 funds); normal bond (52 funds); guaranteed (29 funds); money market (53 funds); and QDII funds (119 funds). A cross-sectional analysis of fund performance is performed using Sharpe and Jensen’s measures as dependent variables and fund-specific variables (Age, Turnover, Tenure, Frontload, Redemption fees, and Management fees), market-specific variables (P/E ratio, P/B ratio, Market capitalization), and fund types as independent variables.

Findings

The findings show that Chinese funds generate positive αs for their investors. The highest return is provided with aggressive allocation funds followed by moderately aggressive allocation funds. The average Jensen’s α is the highest in aggressive allocation funds. QDII funds do not provide significant positive αs; in several instances αs are negative. Further analysis of sub-periods show that Chinese funds do not consistently provide excess returns and show great variations. The study also finds that older funds, funds with higher fees, high price to book ratio, and smaller funds continue to perform better than other funds.

Originality/value

This study adds value by focussing on Chinese funds and risk/return characteristics of these funds. The research will further explore factors explaining these returns.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the performance of US mutual funds that invest primarily in emerging market equities and bonds.

Design/methodology/approach

The study adopts the Morningstar classification of mutual funds and uses the Lipper US Mutual Fund Database through FactSet to obtain monthly returns and various metrics for emerging market equity and bond mutual funds covering the period from January 2000 to May 2017. Several descriptive statistics for these funds are reported as well as various risk-adjusted performance measures. Alphas are computed for different sub-periods using different factor models to mitigate potential biases.

Findings

The results show that diversified emerging market funds generate some significant alphas for their investors during the study period. Emerging market bond funds, on the other hand, do not provide any significant positive alphas; mostly alphas are negative. An analysis of sub-period performance suggests that these funds do not consistently provide excess returns, showing great variations from one period to another.

Originality/value

The emerging market funds provide US investors with an alternative source of exposure for their portfolios. Emerging markets differ from developed markets on a wide range of market and economic characteristics, including size, liquidity, and regulation. This study contributes to the scarce literature on these types of funds and provides a comprehensive performance assessment against various benchmarks during a period that encompasses significant bear and bull markets across the world.

Abstract

Fair value pricing is a critical issue for mutual funds with international market exposure because trading in the underlying foreign securities is not synchronous with US market trading. Using a sample of Japanese open‐end mutual funds that trade in the USA, this paper explores the potential for exploitation of common mutual fund pricing practices and identifies much larger pricing errors than previously reported. A simple, objective solution to the fair value pricing quandary is proposed. The solution, based on foreign exchange‐traded funds and the S&P 500, provides a timely, objective pricing alternative that is less exploitable than current mutual fund pricing practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The uncertainty as to whether investments in riskier and less efficient markets allow managers to ‘beat the market’ remains a question to which answers are required. Accordingly, the purpose of this chapter is to offer new insights on portfolios of the US, European and Emerging Market (‘EM’) domiciled equity mutual funds whose objectives are the investment in emerging economies, and specifically analyses two main issues: alpha generation and the influence of the funds’ characteristics on their risk-adjusted performance.

Methodology/approach

The dataset is made up a survivorship-bias controlled sample of 137 equity funds over the period January 2004 to December 2014, which are then grouped into equally weighted portfolios according to the scheme’s origin. The Jensen’s (1968) Single-Factor model along with the Fama and French’s (1993) and Carhart’s (1997) multifactor models are employed to authenticate results and answer both research questions.

Findings

Research analysis reveals that EM exposed fund managers fail to collectively outperform the market. It thereby offers ground to believe that the emerging world is very close to being efficient, proving that the Efficient Market Hypothesis (‘EMH’) ideal exists in this scenario where market inefficiency might only be a perception of market participants as any apparent opportunity to achieve above-average returns is speedily snapped up by very active managers. Overall these managers take a conservative approach to portfolio construction, whereby they are more unperturbed investing in large cap equity funds so as to lessen somewhat the exposure towards risks associated with liquidity, stability and volatility.

Furthermore, the findings show that large-sized equity portfolios have the lead over the medium and small-sized competitors, whilst the high cost and mature collective investment vehicles enjoy an alpha which although is negative is superior to their peers. The riskiest funds generated the lowest alpha, and thereby produced doubts as to whether investors should accept a higher risk for the hope of earning higher returns, at least when aiming to gain an exposure into the emerging world.

Originality/value

Mutual fund performance is not an innovative topic so to speak. Nonetheless, researchers and academia have centred their efforts on appraising the behaviour of fund managers domiciled primarily in developed and more efficient economics, leaving the emerging region highly uncovered in this respect. This study, therefore aims at crafting meaningful contributions to the literature as well as to the practical perspective.

Abstract

This study examines the behaviors of eight Asian emerging market Single Country‐Closed End Funds’ (SCCEFs) market prices, net asset values (NAV) and price to net asset value ratios from January 5, 1996 to February 25, 2000, bracketing the period of the Asian currency crisis. The purpose of the study is to discern the degree of change of SCCEFs’ market prices and net asset values (NAV) in conjunction with changes in certain objective economic factors as explanatory variables, particularly changes in exchange rates, that may shed light on the probable reasons for the stickiness of market prices and yet speedy adjustment of NAVs. Results of statistical analysis suggest asymmetric information holding explanation to be the major reason for the observed phenomenon that can be exploited for profitable SCCEF investment decisions.
