Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an improved reconfigurable zero‐IF RF receiver with anti‐interference improvement used in dynamic spectrum resource sharing system at UHF band based on tunable filter array computation. Measured results show that the anti‐interference competence of improved zero‐IF RF receiver is enhanced greatly by employing two tunable filter arrays.

Design/methodology/approach

The anti‐interference reconfigurable zero‐IF RF receiver is based on fully differential I/Q demodulation structure and employs two same tunable filter arrays to meet the requirement on adjacent channel suppression imposed by systems coexisting. The performance requirement of each filter in tunable filter arrays is computed and derived according to the needs of anti‐interference.

Findings

The anti‐interference competence of zero‐IF RF receiver could be enhanced greatly by employing two tunable filter arrays.

Originality/value

The paper provides a method to design zero‐IF RF receivers with anti‐interference competence used in dynamic spectrum resource sharing systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates interference mitigation and read rate improvement by using novel power control and graph‐based scheduling schemes for radio frequency identification (RFID) systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The first method is a distributed power control (DPC) scheme proposed as an alternative to listen‐before‐talk (LBT) for RFID systems specified under CEPT regulations. The DPC algorithm employs reader transmission power as the system control variable to achieve a desired read range and read rate without causing unwanted interference. The second approach is graph‐based scheduling, which uses a graph coloring‐based approach to temporally separate readers with overlapping interrogation zones. The scheduling of the timeslots is carried out so as to offer better efficiency for each reader.

Findings

This paper shows that power control, graph theory, collision probability analysis along with timeslot scheduling schemes can be widely adapted to solve general RFID problems. The study shows that selection of timeslot allocation schemes should be carried out after carefully analysing the process/workflow in the application domain. While fair scheduling schemes can be applicable to stable manufacturing environments, event‐triggered scheduling schemes are more effective in fairly chaotic environments.

Originality/value

The study shows that the proposed interference mitigation and read rate improvement techniques can be generalized to assist in design, development, and implementation of a variety of RFID‐based systems, ranging from supply chain level operations to shop floor control. The proposed techniques improve not only the reliability of RFID systems but, more importantly, improve business processes that rely on RFID data.

Abstract

Research has shown that, when employees’ work-family conflict levels are reduced, performance in the workplace can increase. How to reduce these levels, however, is a complex task. The purpose of this empirical study was to investigate the differences in work-family conflict between full-time worksite employees and full-time teleworking employees (individuals who teleworked from home at least two days per week). Employees (n = 308) in seven for-profit companies in Minnesota were sampled and surveyed using a slightly revised version of the Carlson and Kacmar (2000) work-family conflict scale. The findings indicate that teleworkers had lower levels of overall work-family conflict as well as most of the other work-family conflict variables explored (i.e., strain-based, time-based, work interference with family, family interference with work)

Abstract

The lack of a clear conceptualization and operationalization of the construct of interpersonal conflict makes it difficult to compare the results of different studies and hinders the accumulation of knowledge in the conflict domain. Defining interpersonal conflict as a dynamic process that occurs between interdependent parties as they experience negative emotional reactions to perceived disagreements and interference with the attainment of their goals, the present paper presents a two‐dimensional framework and a typology of interpersonal conflict that incorporates previous conceptualizations of the construct. The first dimension of the framework identifies three properties generally associated with conflict situations: disagreement, negative emotion, and interference. The framework's second dimension identifies two targets of interpersonal conflict encountered in organizational settings: task and interpersonal relationship. Based on this framework, the paper highlights several shortcomings of current conceptualizations and operationalizations of interpersonal conflict in the organizational literature, and provides suggestions for their remedy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of leadership on work-family spillovers. Specifically, we analyze the relationships between leadership (leader-member exchange (LMX) with one negative work-family spillover effect (work-family interference) and one positive work-family spillover effect (work-family facilitation). The authors hypothesize that LMX influences work-family spillover via different mediators, rather than one all-encompassing mediator, such as empowerment.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors hypothesize that a good relationship with your supervisor (high LMX) diminishes work pressure, which in turn reduces work-family interference. Furthermore, the authors expect that a good relationship with your supervisor positively relates to the meaningfulness of work, as you could get more interesting work and more understanding of your role within the organization. In turn, this will increase work-family facilitation. These hypotheses are tested using a nation-wide survey among Dutch healthcare professionals.

Findings

Findings of structural equation modeling (SEM) indeed indicate that high-quality LMX is negatively related to work-family interference, and that this is mediated by work pressure (53 percent explained variance). Furthermore, the authors found that a good relationship with your supervisor is positively related to meaningfulness of work, which in turn positively correlates to work-family facilitation (16 percent explained variance).

Originality/value

The added value of the paper lies in introducing two mediators – work pressure and meaningful work – which worked adequately both theoretically and empirically, instead of the sometimes problematic mediators empowerment and stress; a focus on healthcare professionals; and using sophisticated techniques to test the model (SEM with bootstrapping).

Any of these aspects involves a major investigation if the firm is interested in discovering untapped sources of economy. It is one of the avenues not often explored by work study, but there is no valid reason why it should remain a sort of no‐man's‐land.

Abstract

This paper presents a versatile and economical knowledge‐based assembly design of blade and shell assemblies by employing behavioral modeling concepts. Behavioral modeling is a new generation CAD concept aimed at achieving ultimately optimum results with the efforts made in the early stage of the product development cycle. As a result, the assembly process of any odd‐configured parts such as torque converter blades, can be accurately planned, and made adaptable to all potential in‐process alterations due to either changes of components design or that of the assembly kinematics. Optimum assembly design is achieved when the volumetric interference meets a desired value based on an expert's determination. Experimental verification of the proposed optimum assembly design conducted in Luk, Inc. with two different blades' assemblies demonstrates satisfactory results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the possibility to replace radio equipment compliance requirements based on equipment parameters with a set of simple metrics that accurately reflects spectrum utilization and spectrum-sharing efficiency.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach taken is to go back to the basic factors that determine radio system behavior in a shared spectrum environment: radio frequency power, duty cycle and frequency occupation. By normalizing these parameters, device specificity is avoided and a statistical perspective on spectrum utilization and sharing becomes possible.

Findings

The analysis shows that two technology-neutral metrics would be adequate to govern spectrum utilization and sharing: a spectrum utilization metric and a spectrum-sharing efficiency metric. These metrics form the core of regulatory requirements for shared frequency bands. Each shared frequency band could be assigned criteria based on these metrics that take into account the types of applications for which that band will be used.

Research limitations/implications

This work is a first step that identifies the main factors that affect shared spectrum usage from a statistical point of view. More work is needed on the relationship between real-world interference and its abstraction in the spectrum-sharing rules.

Practical implications

The metrics proposed could be considered as the basis for a new approach to the regulation of the license-exempt spectrum, and, by extension, as the basis for generic compliance criteria. Their use would facilitate the compliance assessment of software-defined radio technology.

Social implications

This work has no direct social implications.

Originality/value

This paper combines new work on spectrum utilization criteria with extensions of previous work on spectrum-sharing efficiency into a comprehensive proposal for a new approach to the regulation of the license-exempt spectrum.

Abstract

Purpose

Grey target decision-making serves as a pivotal analytical tool for addressing dynamic multi-attribute group decision-making amidst uncertain information. However, the setting of bull's eye is frequently subjective, and each stage is considered independent of the others. Interference effects between each stage can easily influence one another. To address these challenges effectively, this paper employs quantum probability theory to construct quantum-like Bayesian networks, addressing interference effects in dynamic multi-attribute group decision-making.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the bull's eye matrix of the scheme stage is derived based on the principle of group negotiation and maximum satisfaction deviation. Secondly, a nonlinear programming model for stage weight is constructed by using an improved Orness measure constraint to determine the stage weight. Finally, the quantum-like Bayesian network is constructed to explore the interference effect between stages. In this process, the decision of each stage is regarded as a wave function which occurs synchronously, with mutual interference impacting the aggregate result. Finally, the effectiveness and rationality of the model are verified through a public health emergency.

Findings

The research shows that there are interference effects between each stage. Both the dynamic grey target group decision model and the dynamic multi-attribute group decision model based on quantum-like Bayesian network proposed in this paper are scientific and effective. They enhance the flexibility and stability of actual decision-making and provide significant practical value.

Originality/value

To address issues like stage interference effects, subjective bull's eye settings and the absence of participative behavior in decision-making groups, this paper develops a grey target decision model grounded in group negotiation and maximum satisfaction deviation. Furthermore, by integrating the quantum-like Bayesian network model, this paper offers a novel perspective for addressing information fusion and subjective cognitive biases during decision-making.
