Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, the demand for oil and gas pipelines has increased rapidly. Due to the restrictions of the pipeline routing, pipelines are generally laid in parallel or in the same trench, which results in stray-current interference between the independent cathodic protection (CP) systems. The purpose of this paper is to study the interference between the long-distance parallel pipelines and to obtain the optimized operation for the CP systems.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, first, the numerical model of parallel pipelines was established using the boundary element analysis software (BEASY). Second, the effects of horizontal distance between parallel pipelines, coating damage rate, soil conductivity and anode output current on the interference of parallel pipelines were studied. Finally, by varying the layout or the output currents of CP stations, an optimized operation scheme osf long-distance parallel pipelines was put forward.

Findings

Simulation results showed that with a decrease in soil conductivity or coating damage rate, the interference increased. Moreover, the interference decreased with an increase in horizontal distance between two parallel pipelines or a decrease in anode output current. It was found that there are three methods to reduce the interference between long-distance parallel pipelines: to reduce the output currents of CP stations, combined protection and to close part of the CP stations. Among them, to close part of CP stations was the optimized scheme because of the lowest operating and maintenance cost.

Originality/value

The optimized operation scheme proposed in this study can not only solve the interference between parallel pipelines but also provide guidance for the parallel pipelines to be built in the future. Reasonably arranging the cathodic protection stations using numerical simulation can avoid the interference in the cathodic protection systems, and reduce the construction cost.

Abstract

Purpose

To address the lack of data in this field and determine the relationship between the coefficient of friction and the interference between locomotive wheels and axles, this study evaluates the theoretical relationship between the coefficient of friction and the interference under elastic deformation.

Design/methodology/approach

When using numerical analyses to study the mechanical state of the contacting components of the wheels and axle, the interference between the axle parts and the coefficient of friction between the axle parts are two important influencing factors. Currently, as the range of the coefficient of friction between the wheel and axle in interference remains unknown, it is generally considered that the coefficient of friction is only related to the materials of the friction pair; the relationship between the interference and the coefficient of friction is often neglected.

Findings

A total of 520 press-fitting experiments were conducted for 130 sets of wheels and axles of the HXD2 locomotive with 4 types of interferences, in order to obtain the relationship between the coefficient of friction between the locomotive wheel and axle and the amount of interference. These results are expected to serve as a reference for selecting the coefficient of friction when designing axle structures with the rolling stock, research on the press-fitting process and evaluations of the fatigue life.

Originality/value

The study provides a basis for the selection of friction coefficient and interference amount in the design of locomotive wheels and axles.

Abstract

Purpose

The rotor in screw motor is driven to rotate by highly pressure difference of drilling fluid (DF), while rotor drives drill bit to break rocks. DF works in the volume cavity (VC) which exists between the stator and rotor (SAR), these process realizes the conversion from hydraulic energy to mechanical energy finally. In order to assure seal performance and output power reliability of VC in common hypocycloid screw motor (CHSM), it’s essential to survey SAR end-face profile.

Design/methodology/approach

In this article, based on the internal and external cycloid method given for SAR end-face of φ172 7/8-head LZ type CHSM, the interference among SAR is established based on the meshing model through theoretical equilibrium method (TEM). Last, the reasonable design value of SAR interference in TEM is verified with the hydraulic parameters test results.

Findings

The profile optimization that top-root part of rotor end-face profiles is replaced by elliptical-circular arcs (ECA) makes the transition area of tooth-top and tooth-root connect smoother than before. The reasonable interference of SAR in TEM is almost 0.16mm~0.22mm to ensure better sealing performance. Through the hydraulic test, the interference positive fluctuation or the number of SAR head reduces increase (starting-pressure-drop) SPD while negative fluctuations by contraries. Meanwhile, DF penetration also decreases the revolution speed with the SAR interference decreases. The less SAR head revolution speed is always below the more with the constant driving power and DF hydraulic drop. Ultimately, decreasing in overall-efficiency occurs for larger fluctuation of interference or or less interference among SAR.

Originality/value

The line type optimization and analysis in TEM for CHSM improves the motor seal and output performance, also has important application values simultaneously.

Abstract

Purpose

The turn of the twenty-first century witnessed significant shifts in the global work environment that led to employees’ personal and professional lives witnessing dynamic transformations. Work-life interference has become the norm rather than the exception for most employees, who, of late, experience more significant interference in balancing work obligations and family responsibilities. This study aims to examine the bi-directional interference experienced by working women in India’s health-care sector.

Design/methodology/approach

For this study, 850 questionnaires were distributed to selected health-care workers in Northern India. After eliminating the invalid questionnaires, 782 valid questionnaires were retained and used for further analyzes.

Findings

The study results revealed that working women in a collectivistic culture such as India experience higher work interference on personal life than personal life interference on work in the health sector. However, women health-care workers with higher support from their employers, families and colleagues experienced lower interference levels. Therefore, health organizations need to put a system in place to ensure the least interference in women employees’ personal lives by providing both emotional and institutional support.

Originality/value

This study undertakes to conceptualize the bidirectional nature of the work-life interface among India’s health-care workers. The findings would direct employers, employees and the practitioners involved in the health-care sector to execute policies and practices that attempt to facilitate work-life integration among the workers and generate positive organizational outcomes.

Purpose

The purposes of the study were (1) to examine whether directional dominance between co-existing athlete brands and sponsor brands exists; (2) to explore whether directional dominance influences consumers' memory interference; and (3) to test whether brand interference interacts with directional dominance among brands to influence consumer evaluation and behaviors under multiple endorsement and sponsorship portfolios.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is a 3 (directional dominance: symmetric dominance vs. asymmetric dominance with existing vs. asymmetric dominance with newly endorsed brand) x 2 (brand memory interference: interference vs. no interference) between-subjects factorial design.

Findings

The results indicate that (1) directional dominance influenced consumer brand interference, and directional dominance interacted with brand interference on (2) brand evaluation and (3) purchase intention in multiple brand portfolios.

Originality/value

Considering that conventional single-sponsor sponsorship or single-endorser endorsement portfolios are increasingly rare, research on concurrent circumstances of multiple endorsers and multiple endorsed brands in multiple brand portfolios was necessary. By expanding and reconceptualizing the context of brand networks, this study provides empirical evidence on how the dominance and directionality between endorser and (existing and newly) endorsed brands—an athlete endorser's strong pre-existing association with an existing endorsed brand in particular—influenced consumer brand interference and the brand evaluation in multiple brand portfolios.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to discriminate fake interference caused by polygonal approximation so as to achieve accurate assembly sequence planning and assembly simulation.

Design/methodology/approach

An approximation zone model is proposed to formulate polygonal approximation. Fake interference is discriminated from hard interference by evaluating if polygonal models intersect within corresponding approximation zones. To reduce the computation, the surface-surface, surface-end face and end face-end face intersection test methods have been developed to evaluate the intersection and obtain collision data. An updated collision detection algorithm with this method is presented, which is implemented by a system named AutoAssem.

Findings

This method has been applied to a set of products such as a valve for assembly interference matrix generation, static and dynamic collision detection. The results show that it ensures the accuracy of assembly sequence planning and assembly simulation for polygonal models.

Practical implications

This method facilitates assembly design in the virtual environment with polygonal models. It can also be applied to computer aided design systems to achieve quick and accurate collision detection.

Originality/value

Fake interference between polygonal models may result in serious errors in assembly sequence planning and assembly simulation. Assembly zone model and novel polygon intersection verification methods have been proposed to effectively tackle this problem. Compared to current methods, this method considers valid penetration direction and approximation difference, does not need to process complicated auxiliary data and can be easily integrated with current collision detection methods.

Abstract

Purpose

Aims to realize the high accurate contour control with high‐speed motion of articulated robot manipulator (ARM) with interference.

Design/methodology/approach

Proposes a new contour control method by using Gaussian neural network (GNN) to solve the problem of the deterioration of the contour control performance due to the interference between robot links. The construction of the GNN controller and the approximation of the interference are based on the Euler‐Lagrange model of ARM. The actual input/out data about the motion of ARM are used for training the GNN to accurately represent the inverse dynamics of ARM with interference. With the Lyapunov function, the stability and the robustness of the GNN controller are discussed. Through the simulation and experiment, it verified that the precision of the contour control has been improved, and illustrated the good features of the proposed method.

Findings

Finds that the actual data about the motion of ARM, which is easily obtained from the working field, can express the real features of ARM, and the GNN controller can improve the precision of the contour control with good features.

Practical implications

The proposed method provides an effective method for realizing high accurate contour control of ARM with interference. It can be extended to the ARMs with more than two links and concerning more factors affecting the precision of the contour control, such as friction or gravity.

Originality/value

Proposes a new GNN controller for realizing high accurate contour control of ARM with interference, which is significant for industry.

The purpose of this paper is to quantify the influence of alternating current (AC) interference on hydrogen evolution reaction of X80 steel.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to quantify the influence of alternating current (AC) interference on hydrogen evolution reaction of X80 steel.

Design/methodology/approach

The hydrogen evolution potential was obtained by cathodic potentiodynamic polarization curve. The instantaneous potential under AC interference was obtained by high-frequency acquisition with three-electrode system. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Tafel polarization curves were used to study the influence mechanism of AC interference on instantaneous potential.

Findings

It was concluded that the hydrogen evolution reaction could occur on X80 steel under AC interference. There were critical AC current densities of about 100 to 200 A/m2, beyond which the cathode reaction of X80 steel changed from oxygen absorption to hydrogen evolution. Besides the pH value, the initial polarization potential EZ and impedance module of the steel/electrolyte interface under AC interference were also the factors that affected the critical AC densities in different solutions.

Originality/value

This research quantified the hydrogen evolution capacity of X80 steel under AC interference, which could be applied to clear the effect of AC interference on hydrogen evolution reaction.

Abstract

Part‐list interference occurs when reading a few items from a previously viewed list interferes with recall of the remaining items. The purpose of this study is to examine if the review of an incomplete flowchart, following the review of a complete narrative, interferes with auditors’ recall and evaluation of internal control information. The potential interaction between auditors’ internal control knowledge and the extent of part‐list interference is also investigated. The results indicate there was a significant interaction between knowledge and part‐list interference, suggesting that interference related to an incomplete flowchart occurred primarily with less knowledgeable auditors. Therefore, higher levels of knowledge may reduce interference when recall cues are organized schematically, as found in flowcharts.

Abstract

Purpose

To examine the relative power of four dispositional, self‐evaluation traits (adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism, generalized self‐efficacy, and general self‐esteem) versus three situational factors (organizational time demands, potential negative career consequences, and managerial support) in predicting work interference with home (WIH) and home interference with work (HIW).

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted among 223 UK public sector employees. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis tested main effects of personality and situational characteristics on WIH and HIW. A usefulness analysis determined whether dispositional or situational variables had greater predictive power for the two dependent variables.

Findings

Significant, negative main effects of adaptive perfectionism on HIW, and of self‐esteem on WIH. Positive relationships were found between maladaptive perfectionism and both WIH and HIW. Situational factors were also significant predictors of WHI: organizational time demands were positively associated with WIH, while managerial support had a negative relationship with WIH. Dispositional variables accounted for 15 per cent of variance in HIW, but only 4 per cent of variance in WIH.

Research limitations/implications

The cross‐sectional design of the study does not permit firm conclusions regarding causality, and the results may be influenced by common method bias.

Practical implications

Raising awareness of the role of personality in work‐home interference may assist managers in providing more effective support to employees. The danger exists that policy‐makers will dismiss HIW as an individual responsibility due to the influence of dispositional factors.

Originality/value

This study indicates that self‐evaluation personality characteristics play a key role in predicting HIW, and are more important than traditionally investigated factors associated with the home and workplace environments.
