Abstract

Using an integrodifferential approach to steady‐state skin effect problems, the current density distribution in straight flat conductors is solved by the finite‐element method. The approach takes into account a combination of one‐dimensional finite elements corresponding to the flat conductors and triangular finite elements for the remaining domain outside conductors. The results obtained for a flat conductor placed inside a ferromagnetic medium are compared with analytical solutions provided by finite Fourier transforms. As a final output, besides current density distribution, one can calculate parameters useful to designers such a a.c. resistance and reactance of the straight flat conductors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to design a suitable guard trace to reduce the electromagentic interference between two closely spaced high frequency transmission lines. A novel cross-shaped resonator combined via fence is passed down to alleviate far-end and near-end crosstalk (NEXT) in tightly coupled high-speed transmission lines. The distance between the adjacent transmission lines is increased stepwise as a function of trace width.

Design/methodology/approach

A rectangular-shaped resonator via fence is connected by a guard trace has been proposed to overcome the coupling between the traces that is separated by 2 W. Similarly, by creating a cross-shaped resonator via fence connected by guard trace that reduces the spacing further by 1.5 W.

Findings

A tightly coupled transmission line structure that needs separation by a designed unit cell structure. Further research needs to be conducted to improve the NEXT, far-end crosstalk (FEXT) and spacing between the transmission lines.

Originality/value

This study portrays a novel method that combines the resonators via fence with a minimum spacing between the tightly coupled transmission lines which reduce the NEXT and FEXT; thereby reducing the size of the routing area. The resultant test structures are characterized at high frequencies using time domain and frequency domain analysis. The following scattering parameters such as insertion loss, NEXT and FEXT of the proposed method are measured as 1.504 dB, >30 dB and >20 dB, respectively.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on the finite element method in the frequency domain (FD-FEM) for the transient electric field in the non-sinusoidal steady state under the non-sinusoidal periodic voltage excitation.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the boundary value problem of the transient electric field in the frequency domain is described, and the finite element equation of the FD-FEM is derived by Galerkin’s method. Secondly, the constrained electric field equation on the boundary in the frequency domain (FD-CEFEB) is also derived, which can solve the electric field intensity on the boundary and the dielectric interface with high accuracy. Thirdly, the calculation procedures of the FD-FEM with FD-CEFEB are introduced in detail. Finally, a numerical example of the press-packed insulated gate bipolar transistor under the working condition of the repetitive turn-on and turn-off is given.

Findings

The FD-CEFEB improves numerical accuracy of electric field intensity on the boundary and interfacial charge density, which can be achieved by modifying the existing FD-FEMs’ code in appropriate steps. Moreover, the proposed FD-FEM and the FD-CEFEB will only increase calculation costs by a little compared with the traditional FD-FEMs.

Originality/value

The FD-CEFEB can directly solve the electric field intensity on the boundary and the dielectric interface with high accuracy. This paper provides a new FD-FEM for the transient electric field in the non-sinusoidal steady state with high accuracy, which is suitable for combined insulation structure with a long time constant.

Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to describe how people manage to integrate their use of paper and electronic documents in modern office work environments.

Design/methodology/approach

An observational interview type study of 14 participants from 11 offices in eight organizations was conducted. Recorded data were analysed using a thematic analysis method. This involved reading and annotation of interview transcripts, categorizing, linking and connecting, corroborating, and producing an account of the study.

Findings

The findings of the study can be categorized into four groups: the roles paper and electronic documents serve in today's offices, the ways in which these documents are managed, the problems associated with their management, and the types of fragmentation that exist in terms of their management and how these are dealt with.

Practical implications

The study has identified the need for better integrated management of paper and electronic documents in present-day offices. The findings of the study have then been used to propose a set of guidelines for the development of integrated paper and electronic document management systems.

Originality/value

Although similar studies of offices have been conducted in the past, almost all of these studies are prior to the widespread use of mobile and network-based shared technologies in office environments. Furthermore, previous studies have generally failed to identify and propose guidelines for integration of paper and electronic document management systems.

Abstract

Purpose

The general aim of this chapter is to scrutinize implicit assumptions regarding leadership in the public sector entailed in the normative concept of “good governance.” We draw on the concepts of leadership substitution (Kerr & Jermier, 1977), managerial leadership activities (e.g., Bass & Avolio, 1994), and demands for leadership (Blom & Alvesson, 2014). In our empirical study, we explore fine-grained processes of leadership in several local government organizations, including everyday decision-making and social interactions.

Methodology/approach

A qualitative study was conducted on the basis of 21 interviews with middle- and lower level managers and their subordinates in five municipal departments in Germany and three in Lithuania.

Findings

The results suggest that everyday leadership processes can be considered as the coexistence of leadership substitutes and leadership interventions, initiated by the leaders and their subordinates. Such leadership substitutes like routines, laws, and instructions turned out as particular important constituents of leadership processes.

Research Implications

Results of our study open several new avenues for further research on governance and leadership in local governance organizations. First, future research can proceed with a re-conceptualization of leadership in the context of local governance by drawing on the follower-oriented approaches of leadership and governance. Particular focus on tensions, conflicts, and struggles as well as on the interrelationships between different hierarchical levels of public administration could represent a fruitful extension of our study. Second, the institutional and country-based contexts of local government systems should be taken into account more explicitly while studying leadership practices.

Practical Implications

In terms of implications for practice, the results of the study call for an explicit consideration of the everyday activities while implementing “good governance.” Considerations of leadership as process of daily interactions between leading persons, subordinates and codes, structures, process rules, and management instruments should become a necessary element of such concepts, otherwise, important aspects of a “good governance” would be ignored and couldn’t be realized.

Originality/value

Our study contributes to the behavioral perspective of governance structures in the public sector by providing empirical insights from local government contexts and by re-conceptualizing governance and leadership processes. Instead of a merely reductionist concentration on managerial positions and persons, we propose a social-constructionist view on governance that allows for a more fine-grained, context-sensible perspective on governance in the public sector. Concretely, we call for a conceptualization of micro-level governance structures and processes mainly as a result of ongoing order-maintaining and order-negotiating processes between supervisors and subordinates, accompanied by institutions of leadership substitution and interventions from leaders and subordinates.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the potential use of natural colorant extracted from fruit flesh and leaves of Cucumis melo L. (C. melo L.) in coating applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Carotenoids and chlorophylls compounds were extracted from C. melo L. fruit flesh and C. melo L. leaves with the best extraction solvents. Both compounds were tested at various pH for colour stability tests. Then, the most stable pH of both extracts was mixed with 20 per cent poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) together with tetrahydrofuran and acrylic polyol to form a coating system on glass slides. The coated glass slides were exposed to three different temperatures. The effects of heat on the coated glass slides were evaluated using spectrophotometer at 400-700 nm wavelengths.

Findings

Results revealed that carotenoids extracted from C. melo L. were less stable to be applied in coating applications since the colour degraded in a very short time; however, the chlorophylls extracted were more stable where the colour retained for longer duration.

Originality/value

The method of the plant pigment production of C. melo L. with PMMA was a modified method that could give other various applications as natural product based on plant pigments.

Purpose

Theoretical reconstruction for the sake of deeper and clearer understanding of an important theme in classical philosophy (aporia/euporia)

Methodology/approach

Logical critique (and reconstruction); aporetic and euporetic logic.

Findings

Using key texts by Plato and Aristotle on aporia and euporia, I attempt to show that Derrida’s, and more broadly deconstructive, readings are problematic and require careful and critical reconsideration.

Research limitations

A full account of aporia in the work of Derrida is beyond the scope of the paper – so too is a full account of aporia and euporia in the works of Plato and Aristotle.

Practical implications

The paper has important implications in terms of our reading and interpretation of important classical texts such as Aristotle’s Metaphysics.

Originality/value

The paper builds on important research by philosophers like Matthews and on the nature and role of aporia in classical philosophy, just as it extends the author’s own critique of deconstructive appropriations of aporia. It argues for the importance of reconstructing our understanding of aporetic and euporetic thinking in order to see it more clearly especially in its classical forms, contexts and frameworks.

Abstract

This study presents a theoretical analysis along with a conceptual framework that combines research findings in consumer behaviour, marketing and tourism. Services, in general, are perceived to be riskier than goods and tourism services, especially, have been considered as critical in tourist' perception of risk. Hitherto, little attention has been paid to the influence of perceived risk on customer value in tourism. Thus, a conceptual framework, developed with respect to perceived risk and customer value amongst tourists, is presented. Since the proposed model of customer value will have to be validated, propositions for future research are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

Shadegan County as a wetland area was selected because of its susceptibility to flooding hazards and inundation. The purpose of this paper is to analyze flooding hazard based on the analytical hierarchy process methodology.

Design/methodology/approach

The eight influencing factors (slope, distance from wetland, distance from river, drainage density, elevation, curve number, population density and vegetation density) were considered for flood mapping within the Shadegan County using analytical hierarchical process, geographical information system and remote sensing. The validation of the map was conducted based on the comparison of the historical flood inundation of April 21, 2019.

Findings

The results showed that around 32.65% of the area was under high to very high hazard zones, whereas 44.60% accounted for moderate and 22.75% for very low to the low probability of flooding. The distance from Shadegan Wetland has been gained high value and most of the hazardous areas located around this wetland. Finally, the observed flood density in the different susceptibility zones for the very high, high, moderate, low and very low susceptible zones were 0.35, 0.22, 0.15, 0.19, and 0.14, respectively.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the flood susceptibility map developed here is one of the first studies in a built wetland area which is affected by anthropogenic factors. The flood zonation map along with management and restoration of wetland can be best approaches to reduce the impacts of floods.
