The success of an organization that is operating in a volatile industry and in an increasingly uncertain external environment depends on various factors. Although existing literature mentions factors that could be considered as prerequisites of success for the continuity of business, there is limited research done specifically in the fuel/energy logistics industry within the context of United Arab Emirates. Using case study as a methodology, the present authors aim at understanding the growth model and strategic success factors of an energy logistics company, established in Dubai, the “Tristar Group.” With a presence in more than 21 countries, the group has over 22 years of history with 4 major service offerings under its portfolio. During its tenure, Tristar has achieved more than 70 awards and accolades, both regional and global in the field of corporate social responsibility (CSR), safety, quality, employee engagement, and strategic partnerships. The strategic drivers that have influenced the success of the organization include: responsible leadership and strategic agility, building a safety culture through strategic alliances, customer retention through service excellence, CSR and sustainability initiatives, employee empowerment & engagement, and enhanced service offerings through integrative growth strategy. In conclusion, the case study recommends the following future areas for research, namely, the impact of global scanning on corporate growth strategies, the types and nature of tools & interventions to be used for sustaining a safety led culture and the capabilities required for an organization to be resilient and anti-fragile.

Male identity and motor-mobility are deeply intertwined across much of the globe but nowhere is this relationship more strongly in evidence than in Africa. On the African continent, road transport work has always appeared, in essence, to be a masculinist domain: it is almost always men who are seen driving commercial vehicles, regulating loading activities in the lorry and bus parks (and now the motorcycle stages), undertaking roadside repairs, vulcanising tyres, and even serving fuel. This does not mean that women are entirely absent from the sector, but their place is commonly peripheral – constrained at least in part by hegemonic norms of femininity that shape women’s self-understandings. They typically supply cooked food, alcohol and sex to male road workers, or take on back-breaking work in the lowliest – and lowest paid – of porterage roles, head-loading goods along the road, carrying materials when assisting men making and mending roads, or loading vehicles. From time to time, women have aspired to infiltrate more lucrative areas of the sector, especially through ownership of commercial vehicles, but their closer engagement with the oily nuts and bolts of the road business remains rare.

This chapter draws on a wide range of published and grey literature and some personal ethnographic research from a diversity of African countries and contexts to examine women’s efforts at engagement in the sector. The discussion spans women’s employment in road transport services (porterage, ticket-selling, taxis, buses, Bus Rapid Transit [BRT] and commercial trucks) and the road construction that supports transport service operations (engineering, planning, contracting, and labouring). The authors pay particular attention to the factors that so often continue to impede women’s progress in these arenas. The concluding section first references COVID-19 and its detrimental impacts on women transport workers’ jobs, then considers the potential for overcoming current barriers and promoting a more central space for women in transport operations, a development that could provide significant benefits across the sector.

Abstract

This short case study deals with the analysis of the airborne refueling tanker contract placed by the U.S. Department of Defense to the U.S. group Boeing. The data used in this case is all drawn from secondary sources, and the story told chronologically. Initially, the scene is set with a discussion of the types of relationship, planned and de facto, that emerge when companies do business with each other, and an analysis of the situations when different emphasis is placed upon specific benefits and costs of the relationship. Discussion continues around the concept that relationship benefits are perceived as more important for the continuation of a relationship than relationship costs – when relationship value, direct switching costs, and sunk costs exist, the search for a new partner is reduced.

The question of why Boeing was favored by the U.S Department of Defense over competing Airbus Industries stands in the center of this analysis. The analysis explains how existing business relations and their binding effects, as well as resulting advantages and disadvantages, influence subsequent behavior.
