This manuscript conducts a bibliometric analysis of scholarly literature on sustainable development goal 5 (SDG 5) – gender equality, focusing on Arab countries. The purpose is to comprehensively assess the research landscape, identify trends, contributors and research hotspots and inform evidence-based policies for advancing gender equality in the region.

A descriptive bibliometric analysis was used, using the Scopus database for data collection. The study covers English-language research papers published in peer-reviewed journals between 1993 and 2022, using a comprehensive search strategy focused on gender equality in Arab countries.

The analysis of 634 papers revealed a steep rise in publications post-2015, aligning with the adoption of SDGs. The growth trajectory and citation analysis demonstrated a significant increase in both publications and impact over the last decade. The study identified prolific journals, subject areas, countries, institutions and authors contributing to the literature on gender equality in Arab countries. Notable research hotspots include domestic violence, female genital mutilation, women’s empowerment, microfinance and gender-based violence.

This study contributes to the literature by providing a detailed bibliometric review of SDG 5 research in Arab countries, offering insights into the growth patterns, prolific contributors and research hotspots. The identification of recent research topics, such as child marriage in conflict contexts and female leadership, adds originality to the analysis.

This chapter emphasizes the interconnectedness of legal frameworks, socio-cultural norms, and policy interventions in forging a more inclusive and just society for girls and women. Despite substantial strides, gender disparities still persist across the Western world, highlighting the need for targeted actions. The chapter explores the “glass ceiling” phenomenon, the wage gap, gender-based violence, emphasizing their persistence, and the imperative of transformative policies. Shifting focus to the East, the narrative navigates through distinct trajectories of women’s rights advocacy. Religious beliefs have historically reinforced gender inequality in some Eastern societies, shaping cultural norms and limiting women’s public participation. In the context of Islam, varying interpretations have led to differing perspectives on gender roles. The chapter showcases instances of progress, such as Saudi Arabian women gaining voting rights, while acknowledging enduring challenges like female genital mutilation and forced marriages. In the conclusion part, the chapter highlights the need for sustained efforts to dismantle barriers and elevate women’s voices, fostering a global landscape marked by gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Employability skills have transformed from the acquisition of university degrees to possessions of cognate skills other than only degrees that can help employees secure employment in contemporary work environments. This study evaluates essential skills that will prepare millennia of youths and graduates for employment in the present job market. The study investigated four major hypotheses to underscore the employability opportunities of graduates in challenging 21st-century work environments.

To clearly gain an understanding of women’s disparity in society, the study employed a qualitative approach to evaluate the incidence of gender prejudice in a men’s dominant world. The study utilised two distinguished sampling strategies, purposive and snowballing sampling techniques, which were deemed suitable and useful due to the nature of the study. The study recruited 42 participants by conducting semi-structured interview sessions for the study. The study employed a deductive approach to analyse the data obtained from participants. A thematic content analysis was used to take away prejudice and establish an overarching impression of the interviewed data. Atlas.ti was used to analyse the transcribed interview data from the participants to establish common themes from the surveyed informants.

The results of this investigation indicated that there is a deep-rooted trend of institutionalised men’s dominance in politics and religious leadership. Women perceived less representation and men dominated the two domains of existence in their local environment. The study established that women are optimistic about a turnaround narrative on gender equality in politics and religious leadership. They expressed their concern about strengthened public debate and campaigns on women’s representation, and against gender discrimination. The study further shows that women are influencing the ethical and moral sense for change against women’s neglect in society. They expressed their concerns against the selection of people into political offices for elected political posts and observed the peculiarity of political godfathers fixing their favourite men into those offices.

The study discovered that women are leading campaigns for their representation in politics as well as church leadership today. The novelty of this study bothering around two domains of women’s lives – politics and religion, in particular, church leadership. These have not been evidence before in a study.
