Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore how to overcome and address the loss of exploratory innovation, thereby achieving greater success in exploratory innovation. This phenomenon of loss occurs when enterprises decrease their investment in and engagement with exploratory innovation, ultimately leading to an insufficient amount of such innovation efforts. Drawing on dynamic capabilities, this study investigates the relationship between organizational foresight and exploratory innovation and examines the moderating role of breakthrough orientation/financial orientation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used survey data collected from 296 Chinese high-tech companies in multiple industries and sectors.

Findings

The evidence produced by this study reveals that three elements of organizational foresight (i.e. environmental scanning capabilities, strategic selection capabilities and integrating capabilities) positively influence exploratory innovation. Furthermore, this positive effect is strengthened in the context of a high-breakthrough orientation. Moreover, the relationships among environmental scanning capabilities, strategic selection capabilities and exploratory innovation become weaker as an enterprise’s financial orientation increases, whereas a strong financial orientation does not affect the relationship between integrating capabilities and exploratory innovation.

Research limitations/implications

Ambidexterity is key to successful enterprise innovation. Compared with exploitative innovation, it is by no means easy to engage in exploratory innovation, which is especially important in high-tech companies. While the loss of exploratory innovation has been observed, few empirical studies have explored ways to promote exploratory innovation more effectively. A key research implication of this study pertains to the role of organizational foresight in the improvement of exploratory innovation in the context of high-tech companies.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the broader literature on exploratory innovation and organizational foresight and provides practical guidance for high-tech companies regarding ways of avoiding the loss of exploratory innovation and becoming more successful at exploratory innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Victoria wrote a biography of her experiences. Robert then asked a series of questions from the perspective of a mental health academic.

Findings

Victoria shared stories from her life, and how her experiences have shaped her life and herself.

Research limitations/implications

Narratives such as this give us an overview of only a single person’s experiences. However, they allow the person with lived experience to explore their story in depth.

Practical implications

What Victoria has written will give readers an insight into her life and experiences.

Social implications

There is so much to learn from a story like Victoria’s, especially in her approach to creativity.

Originality/value

This is Victoria’s own unique story. The value of this is apparent upon reading it.

Abstract

Purpose

Focussing on the perspective of business event leaders, this study aims to explore the future of transformative experience (TE) events, recognising a paradigm shift from organising conventional events to designing and guiding TEs in the meetings, incentives and conferences as exhibitions (MICE) context.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a qualitative interview-based design, insights from 20 international business events industry leaders were gathered and analysed by using thematic analysis through a multi-step process with MAXQDA.

Findings

The findings discuss the future of transformative events by identifying the paradigm shift towards TE in business events and outline key dimensions of the leader’s and team’s mindset and skills. Five design principles for TE events in the MICE sector are identified: design for change; emotionally experiential environments; personal engagement; responsibility; and transformative measurement.

Practical implications

The study offers a snapshot of how transformative events of the future could be designed and suggests a series of practical insights for MICE event leaders and organisers seeking to leverage events as a catalyst for intentional transformation, positive impact and long-lasting change.

Originality/value

The study adds to the emerging body of knowledge on TEs and contributes to an extended stakeholder perspective, namely, that of business event leaders and their teams who are instrumental in facilitating transformative events. An original framework for designing TE MICE events is offered as a theoretical contribution.

Abstract

Purpose

A growing body of literature analyzes eco-innovation in the wine industry, specifically focusing on the internal and external factors that contribute to sustainable innovation in wineries. The purpose of this study is to classify wineries according to their eco-innovation strategy and investigate variations in innovation groups concerning networking and socio-demographic characteristics.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use an original firm-level survey conducted between June 2022 and January 2023 to study eco-innovation practices of 234 Hungarian winemakers using four groups of indicators: marketing, organizational, process and product innovations. The authors apply principal component analysis and cluster analysis to identify eco-innovation dimensions and group wineries. The authors also investigate the relationship between eco-innovation strategies, determinants and firm-specific characteristics.

Findings

The estimations identify two innovation modes: with Cluster 1 (characterized by innovative wineries) surpassing Cluster 2 (comprising less innovative wineries) in all aspects. Marketing and process innovations were more widespread than product and organizational innovations. The results confirm the importance of firm and manager characteristics, corporate organization and size, age and education of management influence innovation activity.

Research limitations/implications

The cross-sectional nature of the survey provides a snapshot of the wine industry. To identify changing trends, it is beneficial to conduct follow-up research and ongoing monitoring for a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of eco-innovation over time. The study offers valuable information about the Hungarian wine sector, but generalization of results to other geographic areas or wine-producing regions should be careful. The unique characteristics of particular regions might have a different effect on the dynamics of eco-innovation. Comparative studies across different wine regions or countries may reveal regional variations in eco-innovation strategies and the impact of local contexts.

Practical implications

The study highlights the priority of human elements, such as the commitment of owners and managers to sustainability in driving force for innovation. The ability of businesses to absorb new knowledge and the exchange of information within organizations is crucial in promoting innovation. Considering the results of the survey, managers should proactively strive to improve knowledge transfer and information sharing within their organizations and establish cooperative alliances with universities, research institutes, suppliers, industry bodies and associations and global consultancy firms. Such knowledge-based cooperation can counterweight the innovative inertia of the micro and small enterprises representing the Hungarian wine sector.

Social implications

To address the issue of “innovative inertia” faced by micro and small businesses in the wine sector, policymakers may implement focused supports, such as educational initiatives and grants, to augment their understanding and promote sustainable innovation. They should initiate intra- and inter-cluster connections and cooperations. Incentives, such as tax reduction or financial support, may stimulate wineries to introduce eco-innovation practices. Policymakers could also streamline the process of obtaining funding or grants for wineries interested in investing in cutting-edge solutions, such as renewable energy or advanced cultivation technologies to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the eco-innovation literature by providing insights into the drivers and practices of wineries in Hungary. The results emphasize the significance of networking, sharing of knowledge and firm/manager-specific characteristics in influencing eco-innovation in the wine industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the influence of supply chain management by assessing the relationship between internal and external integration and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) owners’ Islamic practices in enhancing halal supply chain integrity (HSCI) and SMEs’ performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 176 SMEs were surveyed using a self-administered questionnaire. The sample was selected using convenience sampling from two major halal exhibition events in Malaysia. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to analyze the data and test the hypotheses.

Findings

The findings showed that supply chain integration (SCI), Islamic human capital and HSCI have a significant relationship with SMEs’ performance. It was also found that HSCI mediated the relationship between both SCI and Islamic human capital and SMEs’ performance.

Practical implications

SME owners or managers should be committed to developing the internal processes within the organization and strategizing to link these processes with the external processes to obtain the full benefits of integration. Furthermore, as the upper management, owners and managers must understand the supply chain challenges, priorities and practices thoroughly, as they are responsible for Islamic business ethics. They should work to provide support to increase religious orientation in the SMEs, as this would likely enhance all other factors.

Originality/value

This is one of the few types of research to use HSCI as a mediator in halal food studies in addition to improving SMEs’ performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the relationship between open innovation (measured by exploratory and exploitative linkages) and firm-level innovative activity in the offshore renewable energy (ORE) sector.

Design/methodology/approach

A unique, purpose-built survey that targeted firms operating in the ORE sector and its supply chain was used. The data provides novel insights into the research activities and networking capabilities of an industry in its infant stages of development. Regression models are used to estimate the relationship between firm-level external linkages and innovative activity.

Findings

Exploratory linkages are positively related to more innovative activity. This relationship is subject to diminishing returns, distinguishing the ORE sector from other sectors. Collaborating with suppliers and accessing scientific journals are conducive to research and development (R&D) activity and process innovation, whilst collaborating with customers is associated with the decision to introduce new products and processes.

Originality/value

This study provides evidence of a positive, but curvilinear, relationship between external knowledge linkages and innovative activity, adding novel insights into the relationship between open innovation (OI) strategies, research and innovation outcomes for firms predominantly in the introductory stages of the technological life cycle with limited commercialisation experience. The nuanced finding that specific linkages matter for certain research and innovation (R&I) outcomes adds deeper complexity to March’s (1991) framework, where tailoring certain exploratory or exploitative linkages to specific innovation activities is important.

Abstract

Venue comes from the Latin word meaning ‘come’ (venire). Not only the event's location or venue affect attendance but it can also have an impact on the event's personality. Additionally, the location or venue affects the event's atmosphere and the visitor experience. The most significant benefit of revitalisation or adaptive reuse is its positive impact on the environment as razing buildings is a major source of waste and carbon emissions, by contrast, adaptive reuse reduces waste, saves energy and conserves resources. The persistence of this chapter is to investigate the challenges and opportunities in making adaptive re-use or revitalisation of heritage buildings that includes forts/palace/museums as a venue for any event. For the purpose of achieving the goal, secondary data from 2000 to 2023 have been compiled from more than 50 research articles that have been published in peer-reviewed and University Grant Commission (UGC) journals, books written by various authors, including the authors themselves, other researchers working in the related field of event management, conference proceedings and websites. The authors discovered from their examination of the literature that the significance of the event venue cannot be unheeded. The event's tone sets the stage for possible guest experience influences. One must carefully consider the kind of venues or settings that are available in the destination before conducting any event.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the performance analysis, science mapping and future direction of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, applications, tools and software used to preserve, curate and predict the historical value of cultural heritage.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses the bibliometric research method and utilizes the Scopus database to gather data. The keywords used are “artificial intelligence” and “cultural heritage,” resulting in 718 data sets spanning from 2001 to 2023. The data is restricted to the years 2001−2023, is in English language and encompasses all types of documents, including conference papers, articles, book chapters, lecture notes, reviews and editorials.

Findings

The performance analysis of research on the use of AI to aid in the preservation of cultural heritage has been ongoing since 2001, and research in this area continues to grow. The countries contributing to this research include Italy, China, Greece, Spain and the UK, with Italy being the most prolific in terms of authored works. The research primarily falls under the disciplines of computer science, mathematics, engineering, social sciences and arts and humanities, respectively. Document types mainly consist of articles and proceedings. In the science mapping process, five clusters have been identified. These clusters are labeled according to the contributions of AI tools, software, apps and technology to cultural heritage preservation. The clusters include “conservation assessment,” “exhibition and visualization,” “software solutions,” “virtual exhibition” and “metadata and database.” The future direction of research lies in extended reality, which integrates virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR); virtual restoration and preservation; 3D printing; as well as the utilization of robotics, drones and the Internet of Things (IoT) for mapping, conserving and monitoring historical sites and cultural heritage sites.

Practical implications

The cultural heritage institution can use this result as a source to develop AI-based strategic planning for curating, preservation, preventing and presenting cultural heritages. Researchers and academicians will get insight and deeper understanding on the research trend and use the interdisciplinary of AI and cultural heritage for expanding collaboration.

Social implications

This study will help to reveal the trend and evolution of AI and cultural heritage. The finding also will fill the knowledge gap on the research on AI and cultural heritage.

Originality/value

Some similar bibliometric studies have been conducted; however, there are still limited studies on contribution of AI to preserve cultural heritage in wider view. The value of this study is the cluster in which AI is used to preserve, curate, present and assess cultural heritages.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study synthesises the body of research revolving around blockchain technology (BCT) whilst drawing on the technology-organization-environment framework, resource-based theory and theory of constraints, to conceptualize capabilities (enablers) and constraints (barriers) of BCT in the hospitality and tourism (H&T) industry.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic literature review of BCT in the hotel and tourism industry has been achieved through two databases, i.e. Scopus and Web of Science. From 544 articles selected between the years 2008 and 2023 (first quarter), a sample of 49 articles was used to structure existing research on this subject.

Findings

The findings of this systematic literature review of BCT in the H&T literature establish a solid groundwork for assessing the evolution of this research area over time. Findings are classified into two groups: capabilities (enablers) and constraints (barriers) of BCT based on publication year, different research methods, theoretical underpinnings and applicable contexts.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first attempts to synthesize studies related to BCT in H&T research by combining three theoretical approaches. It serves as a foundation to evaluate the development of BCT studies in this field.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study is to examine in detail the impact of technological advancements on the workforce within the tourism industry. Specifically, it seeks to understand the effects of information and communication technologies (ICT), social media, the internet and websites, mobile technologies and other technological developments on workforce dynamics, skill requirements and job descriptions. The research intends to analyze how technological innovations are transforming the workforce and how these transformations are influencing practices within the industry.

Design/methodology/approach

This study employs a comprehensive literature review to understand the impact of technological innovations on the workforce in the tourism industry. The research aims to conduct an in-depth examination of empirical data obtained from extensive databases in the fields of technology and tourism and detail the effects of technological advancements on the workforce. Additionally, it includes a general assessment of trends and transformation processes within the sector by synthesizing findings from existing literature on the relationship between technology and workforce.

Findings

The results of the research reveal that technological innovations have fundamentally transformed workforce dynamics and job descriptions. Developments in information technology have led to the automation of routine tasks and the creation of high-skilled new job roles. Social media has contributed to the emergence of new job roles and skill requirements, while the internet and websites have altered digital marketing strategies. Mobile technologies have increased the necessity for the workforce to develop mobile skills. Furthermore, big data and artificial intelligence applications have enhanced the workforce’s data management and analysis capabilities.

Originality/value

This study makes a significant contribution to understanding the impact of technological innovations on the workforce in the tourism industry. The findings emphasize how technological changes have altered skill requirements and job descriptions, highlighting the increased need for continuous education and skill development.
