Abstract

Purpose

The research of unmanned air/ground vehicle (UAV/UGV) cooperation has attracted much attention due to its potential applications in disaster rescue and target surveillance. This paper aims to focus on the UAV/UGV cooperative target tracking and enclosing, considering the limits of detection and sensor failures.

Design/methodology/approach

The UAV/UGV cooperation structure is designed, contributing to homogeneous consistency and heterogeneous communication. The target tracking of UAVs is converted into a constraint optimization problem involving tracking cost, and the target enclosing of UGVs is modeled as formation control.

Findings

The energy estimation pigeon-inspired optimization is developed to generate control inputs for UAVs. And the controller combined with switchable topology is proposed, where the switching rule is flexible in dealing with some emergencies.

Practical implications

The proposed structure and algorithms can be easily applied to practice and help design the UAV/UGV control system.

Originality/value

The energy estimation mechanism is proposed for the target tracking of UAVs, and the rules of switching topologies ensure the target enclosing process of UGVs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine how renewable energy consumption moderates the relationship between inequality and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS). The nexus between energy use and geopolitical tensions has also been explored.

Design/methodology/approach

This study has used distinctive data sets from 1990 to 2018 to explore the interconnections on emission, energy use, inequality and geopolitics. To do away with the difficulties related to heterogeneity and cross-sectional dependence (CD), this paper uses recent estimation methods that are robust to panel heterogeneity and CD.

Findings

The results of the panel augmented mean group (AMG) estimation and common correlated effects mean group (CCEMG) estimation verify the environmental Kuznets curve. The findings show that a 1% rise in Gini inequality leads to a 0.24% rise in the CO2 emission (AMG) method and a 0.17% rise in emissions CCEMG (method). As far as the moderating impact of renewable energy upon Gini measure of inequality is concerned, it is −0.10 AMG and CCEMG methods of estimation, respectively. However, the moderating impact of renewable energy on the geopolitical index leads to a mitigating impact on CO2 emissions, 0.55% decline in AMG method.

Originality/value

This research makes a distinctive contribution by investigating for the first time to the best of the authors’ knowledge the main pillars of sustainable ecological development in the context of the BRICS nations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes an intact framework for building life cycle energy estimation (LCEE), which includes three major energy sources: embodied, operational and mobile.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review is conducted to summarize the selected 109 studies published during 2012–2021 related to quantifying building energy consumption and its major estimation methodologies, tools and key influence parameters of three energy sources.

Findings

Results show that the method limitations and the variety of potential parameters lead to significant energy estimation errors. An in-depth qualitative discussion is conducted to identify research knowledge gaps and future directions.

Originality/value

With societies and economies developing rapidly across the world, a large amount of energy is consumed at an alarming rate. Unfortunately, its huge environmental impacts have forced many countries to take energy issues as urgent social problems to be solved. Even though the construction industry, as the one of most important carbon contributors, has been constantly and academically active, researchers still have not arrived at a clear consensus for system boundaries of life cycle energy. Besides, there is a significant difference between the actual and estimated values in countless current and advanced energy estimation approaches in the literature.
