Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to sketch out what one can see as the emerging “therapeutic turn” in a wide range of areas of contemporary social life including education, especially in relation to understandings of vulnerability and social justice, and then poses the question of what emotional regime has accompanied the emergence of this “therapization” movement, making emotional life in schools the “object-target” for specific technologies of power.

Design/methodology/approach

The psychologization of social problems has been very much in evidence in the development of educational policies and practices – an approach which not only pathologizes social problems as individual psychological deficiencies or traits, but also obscures the recognition of serious structural inequalities and ideological commitments that perpetuate social injustices through educational policy and practice. In the present paper, the author adopts a different perspective, that of the history, sociology and politics of emotions and affects to show how and why the therapization of social justice is part of the conditions for the birth of particular forms of biopower in schools.

Findings

There is an urgent need to expose how psychologized approaches that present social justice as an individualizing responsibility are essentially depoliticizing vulnerability by silencing the shared complicities. It is argued, then, that it is crucial to pay attention to the political and structural dimensions of vulnerability.

Originality/value

Attending to the emotional regime of therapization of social justice has important implications to counter forms of biopower that work through processes of normalization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a deeper understanding of how leaders manage their own and others’ emotions in professional crisis management organizations during severely demanding episodes. The empirical case is a hostage drama that occurred in a small Swedish town. Although staff at the local prison were situationally prepared and trained in incident exercises, two inmates with knives fled the prison after taking a warden hostage.

Design/methodology/approach

A grounded theory approach was used. In all, 14 informants from four Swedish authorities were interviewed on the basis of their involvement in the hostage drama.

Findings

According to the analysis, an emergency response leader’s emotion management is framed by an organizationally embedded emotional regime which is summed up in two core themes: focus on the task and do not let emotions interfere; and provide the task force with maximum physical and psychological security. The leader’s emotion management within this framework consists of two interdependent processes, one more organization oriented and one more individual oriented.

Research limitations/implications

Small sample, lack of representativeness, and lack of illumination of possible gender-related aspects.

Practical implications

The suggested model may be valuable in educational settings.

Originality/value

A new integrative, theoretical process model of leadership and emotion management in complex, stressful operations.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the construction of social imaginaries of fear by the Chilean press regarding student violence during the 1968 university reforming process. Using an approach inspired by the history of emotions, the primary purpose is to analyze the discourse of two relevant conservative newspapers with national circulation about students' mobilization.

Design/methodology/approach

The research rests on the analysis of content in the discourse of the two more representative right-wing Chilean newspapers (El Mercurio and El Diario Ilustrado). Founded in the early years of the 20th century, both had national circulations and were a part of a tradition in the history of the Chilean 20th-century national press. Through the analysis of a selection of editorials and news regarding students' mobilization during 1968, with a focus on the experience of the most prominent institution (Universidad de Chile), this research highlights similarities and differences in the ways that both media endeavoured to elaborate social imaginaries of menace and fear regarding student movements.

Findings

Through the study of the discourse of traditional newspapers, it is possible to identify critical issues concerning the university student movements' purposes to implement breaking (and occasionally violent) methods to carry out the reforms that they promoted, according to the right-wing press. Against this backdrop, the different importance of an anti-communist component is discernible, typical of the Cold War period, in the (political and emotional) arguments of the newspapers under analysis.

Originality/value

This article proposes an interpretation that intertwines a local phenomenon (the reformist movement of the University of Chile) with a global one (the May student revolution of 1968). It also establishes a novel approach by linking, through its approach, yet traditional concepts of social and cultural analysis (the idea of social imaginaries) with a new emphasis on social science and humanities (emotional dimensions).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the factors influencing the encountering information adoption of virtual live streaming from the perspective of the immersion experience. In addition, the paper aims to provide new theoretical perspectives and analytical frameworks for virtual live information behavior.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a review of relevant literature and theories, a model of the encountering information adoption of virtual live streaming users is constructed. In order to complete the empirical study, two experiments and questionnaires have been designed to investigate the relationship between high and low immersion experiences. A total of 1,332 valid survey samples were collected and analyzed, utilizing the structural equation model. In order to delineate the regimes, Gradient Boosted Regression Tree (GBRT) and Lasso regression were further utilized.

Findings

The research findings indicate that users' immersion experience in virtual live streaming has a positive effect on perceived usefulness, trust, and commitment. Furthermore, perceived usefulness and trust have a positive effect on users' emotional arousal and enhance the content experience, while commitment has a negative effect on the content experience. The emotional arousal and content experience of users contribute to their encountering information adoption. The effect of immersion experience on encountering information adoption is partially mediated by perceived usefulness, trust, commitment, emotional arousal, and content experience. The relationship between content experience and encountering information adoption is moderated by digital literacy to a significant extent. In the context of virtual live streaming, the factors influencing users' encountering information adoption can be divided into three distinct regimes. The most significant factors affecting encounter information adoption are trust and commitment, which are located in the first regime. Emotional arousal and digital literacy are situated in the third regime, with the least significant influence on encountering information adoption.

Originality/value

This study constructs a model of virtual live streaming users' encountering information adoption and explores the formation mechanism of encountering information adoption from the perspective of immersion experience, which provides a new perspective for further understanding the influence of virtual live-streaming users' encountering information adoption.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review some trends in global corporate citizenship branding stories and consumer values. The focus is on the triple bottom line and teamwork in organisations.

Design/methodology/approach

Some implications for the individual employee's occupational citizenship and the development of emotional regimes in teams are considered. A suggested alternative triple bottom line is proposed. The other elements of the “triple bottom line” are not neglected but nested within the typical interpretation of three Ps as an emergent alternative triple bottom line.

Findings

This alternative triple bottom line involves a set of emotional and identity issues spiralling around the nature of the emotional relationship that various stakeholders have with any particular organisation's brand story. It is suggested that there is a convergence of values around key issues of consumer ethics, corporate citizenship and sustainability relating to personal as well as product image.

Practical implications

This paper suggests that in the twenty‐first century sustainability will be better secured when organizations begin to seriously address their own emotional ecologies. A set of ten practical steps that could be taken are briefly outlined.

Originality/value

This paper considers the relatively under‐researched topic of emotional aspects of sustainability and specifically applies this to work carried out on MBA teams.

Abstract

Purpose

Regarding how the public regulation of human services is perceived within welfare organizations and how the latter cope with it, the role of emotions (as mediators between structure and agency) proves highly relevant while often being hidden beneath the surface. This article shows how a specific approach to such regulation – here: managerialism – may impact on “emotional regimes” at the organizational and individual level, affecting the attainment of organizational goals and workers' health.

Design/methodology/approach

The article primarily draws on multiple qualitative case studies across two welfare sectors (four organizations) in Germany (continuing education/active inclusion; long-term care). The study research was conducted between 2020 and 2022 and based on 36 interviews with caseworkers and managers, focus group interviews and expert dialogues at industry level.

Findings

The results suggest that the managerialist regulation of welfare services breeds complex and ambiguous emotional regimes. Business-like management techniques elicit various emotions, affecting the motivational basis of human service work. While the experience of hard challenges may raise positive feelings, coping patterns often put strain on organizations and staff alike. In the short run, related emotional regimes tend to make service delivery proceed smoothly, yet in the long run they may have corrosive effects and problematic repercussions on macro-level developments.

Originality/value

The study highlights the role of emotions in publicly regulated human service settings by intermingling macro- and micro-level processes and thereby broadens the perspective of welfare state research as it reveals the impact of (managerialist) regulation on the dynamic organizational chemistry of such settings.

Abstract

The thinking of the philosopher Baruch Spinoza is gradually entering the field of social science. In this paper, we are particularly interested in applying his theory of affects to the analysis of passionate collective behaviours at work in the field of financial markets. The general hypothesis that underpins our work is the idea that, in a context of radical uncertainty about the future, the succession of common affect regimes translates into passionate sequences that determine investor behaviour and produce market dynamics. Using an analysis of the stock market cycles of Taffler, Bellotti, and Agarwal (2018), Taffler, Agarwal, and Wang (2019), we show that the Spinozist concept of common affects can help us to understand the mechanisms in the production of collective emotion and to account for the speculative dynamics at the origin of the great financial bubbles.

Purpose

In response to instrumental cultural policy agendas in the United Kingdom, the paper explores the practice of collaborative cultural work in the criminal justice system through the lens of professional ethics in prison libraries. It seeks to balance narratives on the value of arts and culture in cross-government policy agendas with a nuanced consideration of the realities of such work in non-conventional organisational settings.

Design/methodology/approach

“Instrumental Values: Professional ethics in collaborative cultural work” was a two-year empirical study (2017–2019), including ethnographic fieldwork in three case study sites representing prison library services in England. Following a “communities of practice” conceptual framework, research methods included participant observation of day-to-day cultural work and specific events; successive research interviews with library and prison service staff and volunteers; and interviews with key collaborating organisations from extended professional networks.

Findings

Data from three prison library case studies show consistent ethical implications relating to the extent of collaborative complexity in the field and its impact on participants’ emotional resilience; navigation of the prison regime by cultural workers; consequences for emotional labour and care in the field; and the re-negotiation of ethical boundaries and practices.

Originality/value

The research makes an original contribution to debates on the instrumental value of arts and culture via its intimate focus on prison libraries as microcosms of situated, truly integrated cultural work, both from a physical, organisational perspective and in their representation of a cross-policy function for arts and culture.

Abstract

This chapter aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the ways in which emotions, emotional regulation and emotional labour are treated by various theoretical perspectives that influence the work of school-level leaders. Notions of professionalism and the scientific/rationalist roots of administrative theory (e.g., Taylor, 1911) relegated emotions and other subjective leadership qualities to the sidelines of the seminal debates in the educational administration field. That has changed since the turn of the twenty-first century as scholars have begun to acknowledge that the very nature of school-level leadership involves emotional components and success as a school-level leader demands effective emotional regulation. The chapter includes an evidence-based analysis of the role(s) that emotions, emotional regulation and emotional labour play in school-level leaders' work. I also discuss two broad categories of theoretical perspectives surrounding the emotional aspects of school-level leadership. The first primarily considers how school-level leaders personally experience emotional phenomenon in schools, while the second prioritizes how socio-contextual elements that influence their emotional experiences in the workplace. I conclude the chapter by discussing how school-level leaders manage emotions they experience as part of their job is an important piece missing from the models and frameworks.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this Guest Editorial is to position the special issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The Guest Editors reflect on critical perspectives on the relationship between emotion and learning in the workplace, and also present the four papers that constitute the special issue.

Findings

Emotion and learning are deeply intertwined in the workplace. To understand this inter‐relationship, it is essential to examine the cultural and political context of particular organisations and the countries in which they are located. Class, gender and race are also highly influential factors that need to be taken into account in such studies.

Originality/value

The special issue gives space and consideration to under‐explored and under‐developed areas in the literature on emotion and learning in the workplace: how emotional suffering can block workplace learning, race, emotion and learning in the workplace, and emotion in relation to ICT support for learning.
