The purpose of this paper is to introduce the value of attending the Guadalajara Book Fair and a Sister Library program.

The paper takes the form of an overview by a public library director attending an international book fair and Sister Library program.
Findings
Attending the Guadalajara Book Fair is an invaluable experience not only for the attendee but for the library that the attendee represents. Participation in a Sister Library program is a cooperative venture that is beneficial to both parties.

The paper highlights the value of international collection development and networking, especially the Sister Library program.

A case study of the Tulane Recovery Center in New Orleans that was created after Hurricane Katrina in cooperation with Library Associates Companies (LAC).
Findings
Institutions may have a disaster plan outlined as to what to do in an emergency but in actuality one is never fully prepared for a natural disaster.
Originality/value
This paper examines the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on the Howard‐Tilton Memorial Library at Tulane University and the creation of the Tulane Recovery Center, which can serve as a model for other to follow.

The employee‐supervisor's relationship is crucial to a library's success. The purpose of this paper is to explore how supervisors interpret staff traits and behaviours including the “setting up‐to‐fail syndrome.”
Design/methodology/approach
The approach is a literature review of the set‐up‐to‐fail syndrome.
Findings
Supervisors are not aware that their first impressions of an employee is formed within the first few days of employment. Labeling the employee may be setting the employee up for failure from the start. Supervisors should be aware of this syndrome.
Originality/value
The paper makes library supervisors aware of the set‐up‐to‐fail syndrome and how to alleviate this syndrome in their workplace.
