Abstract

Purpose

The study investigates how sustainability reporting constructs a narrative about an organization that provides its members with a reality they can accept, with the consequence of producing organizational stability.

Design/methodology/approach

The article reports a research engagement concerning the “backstage” of sustainability reporting in one Spanish savings bank, which the researchers engaged with for more than three years.

Findings

The article describes how sustainability reporting operates as a boundary object occupying the space between the organization’s loosely coupled systems and facilitating the cooperation of members with different interpretations of the organization. Different translations of discourses and actions ensure that the sustainability report conveys a ductile narrative that can be tailored to specific interpretations. At the same time, the editing inherent in sustainability reporting ensures that any narrative that may challenge the organization’s dominant perspective is ignored and marginalized. In this way, sustainability reporting produces a discourse that inscribes a narrative of the organization and eventually ensures organizational inertia.

Research limitations/implications

The article highlights the relevance of investigating sustainability reports by exploring the backstage of their production rather than solely the final document.

Originality/value

In contrast to prior research that has been concerned with exploring the extent to which sustainability reporting is associated with organizational change, this study applies different lenses to show how and why sustainability reporting is implicated in the construction of the organization and the maintenance of its stability and inertia.

Abstract

This chapter discusses how immigrants adopt translanguaging practices (i.e., the flexible use of linguistic resources by bilinguals or multilinguals to make sense of their worlds inside and outside classrooms) to scaffold learning, clarify concepts, facilitate communication, and promote academic understanding. Even inside the campus, outside the classroom discourse, translanguaging can be used to navigate bureaucratic systems, such as filling out forms, engaging in social gatherings, or accessing library services, that require proficiency in the language of the host country. Whereas the academic context is not always a positive space for translanguaging practices, everyday communications usually create a positive space for translanguaging. This chapter discusses translanguaging practices in academic and nonacademic contexts. We also provide an overview of the negative pedagogical attitudes toward translanguaging in higher education institutions, where challenges commonly faced by mobile and immobile non-native English scholars pertain to strict strategies. Reflections on the restrictive publishing policies that constitute a negative translanguaging space, acceptable and nonacceptable translanguaging practices in academic publications and the role of translanguaging facilitators, such as artificial intelligence (AI) applications, are also deliberated based on the field experience of a professional copy editor.

Abstract

In this paper, the authors study artistic improvising from a routine dynamics perspective, with a specific interest in how the performance of improvising is strategically enacted. While this dynamic is difficult to empirically study in the case of live improvisation on stage, as we know it from jazz, the specific situation of the recording studio allows the authors to investigate the research puzzle in great detail. First, the authors show how the performance of one specific routine, which the authors identify as the looping routine, makes systematic improvising possible. The authors describe how looping enables improvising through mobilizing the digital equipment in the recording studio. The authors further discuss how the performance of the looping routine allows for individual musical performances in improvising, as well as their emergence into and assembling of a coherent song and record. During the looping routine, the authors find not only artistic improvising but also strategic enactment. Therefore, the authors show how performing the looping routine in the studio enables the strategic enactment of the emerging musical patterns by the musicians and the producer. Thereby, the artistic ideas and performances of the musicians and producers involved are competitively valued and strategically positioned in view of industry-specific contexts.

Abstract

Purpose

This exploratory, descriptive study examines the factors that might influence the success or failure of online peer production communities during their inception stage. It focuses on community-building activities, the roles of users and the dynamics of user interaction, aiming to shed light on practices that could contribute to a community's success at the inception stage.

Design/methodology/approach

By comparing two Stack Exchange Q&A communities with the same timelines but opposite outcomes during their beta testing phases, the research utilizes quantitative methods to categorize community activities, define user roles via k-means cluster analysis and examine interaction networks using social network analysis.

Findings

Our findings suggest the successful Mathematics Q&A community exhibited several distinct practices during its inception, such as the utilization of both external and internal tools, the development of community-specific tutorials and the strategic use of flagging functions for moderation. Eight user roles were discerned, with roles like content editors, metadata curators and gatekeepers being particularly prominent in the successful community. Additionally, a more densely interconnected user network characterized by active participation was observed in the successful community.

Originality/value

Concentrating on the inception stage of online communities, this study uncovers insights into the dynamics at play in the early life of peer production environments and provides empirical observations that may assist in shaping strategies for new online communities. It stands out by comparing communities within the same period to understand factors that may influence their early success.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the digital information repackaging process from the perspective of library website operators. The digital info repackaging process consists of analysis, synthesis, editing and presenting.

Design/methodology/approach

Interviews with 17 library website operators regarding their experience in information repackaging. The library website observation also conducted to gather the data on information repackaging.

Findings

Librarians who manage library websites repackage digital information using a process of user analysis, content analysis, editing and transforming and translating. Librarians who are in charge of repackaging usually collect, check, group and present information based on the raw data and information. Librarians rarely did criticize or argue the information. They just deliver it in the pact and attractive format. In the future, librarians can add critical comments on their digital information content, such as give recommendation, provide point of view, add some suggestion or make comparison.

Practical implications

This paper can provide an overview of the process of repackaging digital information carried out by university libraries which can be provided by libraries via websites. Apart from that, it is hoped that the presence of this research can help librarians in carrying out the process of repackaging digital information.

Originality/value

This paper can add to the scientific development of information science and library studies related to the field of information repackaging, especially in the repackaging of digital information in creating website content to efficiently meet the information needs of university library users.

Abstract

Purpose

Advanced big data analysis and machine learning methods are concurrently used to unleash the value of the data generated by government hotline and help devise intelligent applications including automated process management, standard construction and more accurate dispatched orders to build high-quality government service platforms as more widely data-driven methods are in the process.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, based on the influence of the record specifications of texts related to work orders generated by the government hotline, machine learning tools are implemented and compared to optimize classify dispatching tasks by performing exploratory studies on the hotline work order text, including linguistics analysis of text feature processing, new word discovery, text clustering and text classification.

Findings

The complexity of the content of the work order is reduced by applying more standardized writing specifications based on combining text grammar numerical features. So, order dispatch success prediction accuracy rate reaches 89.6 per cent after running the LSTM model.

Originality/value

The proposed method can help improve the current dispatching processes run by the government hotline, better guide staff to standardize the writing format of work orders, improve the accuracy of order dispatching and provide innovative support to the current mechanism.

Abstract

Purpose

This study investigates the potential effectiveness of ChatGPT in enhancing the academic writing skills of Saudi EFL undergraduate students. It also examines the challenges associated with its use and suggests effective ways to address them in the education sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a sequential mixed-methods approach, which involved distributing questionnaires to gather data from students, followed by conducting semi-structured interviews with a purposeful selection of eight students and six teachers.

Findings

The findings revealed that students were generally satisfied with the effectiveness of ChatGPT in enhancing their academic writing skills. However, they also pinpointed some challenges associated with using ChatGPT, including plagiarism, overreliance, inadequate documentation, threats to academic integrity, and inaccurate information. To alleviate these challenges, effective strategies include deploying detection tools, equipping students and educators with training sessions, and revisiting academic policies and assessment methods. It is recommended that ChatGPT be used responsibly as an assistant tool, in conjunction with students' ideas and teachers' feedback. This approach can significantly enhance students' writing skills and facilitate completing their research projects and assignments.

Practical implications

ChatGPT can be a valuable tool in the educational landscape, but it is essential to use it judiciously. Therefore, teachers' effective integration of ChatGPT into their classrooms can significantly enhance students' writing abilities and streamline their research process.

Originality/value

This study contributes to recent AI-based research and provides practical insights on the responsible integration of ChatGPT into education while addressing potential challenges.

Abstract

Purpose

Current knowledge and research on students’ utilization and interaction with generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their academic work is limited. This study aims to investigate students’ engagement with these tools.

Design/methodology/approach

This research used survey-based research to investigate generative AI literacy (utilization, interaction, evaluation of output and ethics) among students enrolled in a four-year public university in the southeastern USA. This article focuses on the respondents who have used generative AI (218; 47.2%).

Findings

Most respondents used generative AI to generate ideas for papers, projects or assignments, and they also used AI to assist with their original ideas. Despite their use of AI assistance, most students were critical of generative AI output, and this mindset was reflected in their reported interactions with ChatGPT. Respondents expressed a need for explicit guidance from course syllabi and university policies regarding generative AI’s ethical and appropriate use.

Originality/value

Literature related to generative AI use in higher education specific to ChatGPT is predominantly from educators’ viewpoints. This study provides empirical evidence about how university students report using generative AI in the context of generative AI literacy.
