Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the effect of cultural controls and environmental strategy (ES) on environmental innovation (EI). Second, this study examines the role of eco-learning (ECOL) in ES.

Design/methodology/approach

This research sample was composed of 150 publicly traded Brazilian companies that participated in a survey. The hypotheses were analyzed through structural equation modeling and fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis.

Findings

The results showed that cultural controls have a negative effect on ES and a positive effect on EI. This study highlights the importance of ES and ECOL in mitigating the negative impact of cultural controls. The results suggest that organizations adopt a high degree of ECOL and ES to achieve high EI.

Originality/value

This study expands the understanding of the ambivalence of cultural controls and contributes to the literature by suggesting combining them with ES and ECOL to generate environmental benefits.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is, first, to examine environmental, economic and social sustainability. Second, to build upon Jones et al.’s (2011) preliminary investigations into the sustainability agendas of the world’s top ten retailers through an examination of Marks and Spencer’s (M&S) Plan A sustainability strategy. Third, to complement this with a case study examination of its first eco-learning store.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study of M&S’s first eco-store using a consideration of the published literature and interviews with members of staff.

Findings

Retailers exert a significant influence on sustainability issues due to their position in the supply chain between producers and customers. It is argued that M&S’s Plan A environmental strategy demonstrates evidence of an economically successful “strong model of sustainability” compared with the world’s top ten retailers. In total, 15 factors emerged which may provide a checklist for organisations undertaking and managing their own sustainability change programmes.

Research limitations/implications

The research examined only public material produced by M&S and was not privy to internal documentation. Also, due to the traditional limitations of the case study approach findings about the first eco-store may not have transferability to other situations.

Practical implications

Environmental strategies can produce positive financial and social benefits. The grounded approaches used by M&S’s Plan A and first eco-store provide many illustrations of the possible future directions of retailing. Whole life accounting overcomes some of the limitations of annual accounting methods.

Originality/value

The triple bottom line and whole life accounting at M&S have been little discussed. The prototype eco-learning store in Sheffield provides practical insights into a holistic strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine nature-based tourists’ experiences in tree houses using user-generated content in Web reviews. The research objectives were to identify the main dimensions of tree house experiences and test whether these dimensions vary according to different traveller-type market segments.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample of 722 Web reviews was analysed using mixed content analysis methods. Leximancer software provided computer-assisted qualitative data analysis that identified the main themes, after which further qualitative analysis identified the key narratives associated with experiences.

Findings

The results reveal that tourists are extremely satisfied with their stays in tree houses. The main themes that encompass the dominant narratives are tree house, Costa Rica, staff, morning, walk, wildlife, rainforest, opportunity to learn, trip, experience and recommendation. The narratives vary according to type of traveller.

Originality/value

The valuable insights gained emphasise the advantages of using user-generated content in tourism studies. The results also offer a better understanding of the key dimensions of this type of nature-based tourism, including a graphic representation of the main themes and concepts in guests’ narratives. In addition, the findings emphasise that nature-based tourists are not a homogeneous group and that they can be segmented according to type of traveller.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the capacity of ecotourists to exhibit behavior that aligns with the ecotourist scale using the Rasch model measurement.

Design/methodology/approach

The data was gathered using an online survey incorporating the five tenets of ecotourism using a seven-point rating scale on domestic tourists in Indonesia. Descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation and Rasch model measurement were used to analyze the data.

Findings

The ecotourist identification scale measurement items were reliable and satisfactory. The most challenging behavior for ecotourists was using the services of a tour guide who was concerned about the environment. Meanwhile, respecting cultural differences around the tourist destination was the most accessible behavior. Most respondents demonstrated a fit response pattern and satisfactorily met the validity and reliability criteria.

Research limitations/implications

This study did not compare ecotourists’ ability to behave by the type of conservation visited as its limitation. However, it provides a significant methodological contribution to developing a measurement of ecotourist behavior implemented in well-established behavioral theories.

Practical implications

Integrating ecotourism into education, incentivizing eco-friendly tourism practices, promoting awareness, supporting local businesses, respecting local values and ensuring safe travels.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to be conducted in Indonesia. It uses a unique and innovative method to reveal the unobserved variables in ecotourists’ behavior. The findings confirm that tourists’ behaviors align with the five tenets of ecotourism.

Abstract

This case is based on 30 interviews with participants in a seven-year sustainability project at a leading North American manufacturer. The project enhanced financial value and positively impacted the natural and organizational environments. The case draws attention to innovative methods to increase non-executive employee engagement in technical innovation for sustainability. In particular, many interviewees noted how eco-action learning had motivated them to persevere. However, their intense commitment also exacted a cost, most significantly in time away from family. The process by which these results were achieved is discussed as an example of “appreciative intelligence” to suggest how leaders and employees can reframe business, connect elevated personal purpose to day-to-day business tasks, and consequently create a more sustainable future.

Abstract

Purpose

With the exponential growth of problems linked to the natural environment, healthcare facilities are increasingly faced with ecological challenges in their operations. In this regard, they progressively need to improve their environmental performance like other industries in recent years. Applying the natural-resource-based view (NRBV) and dynamic capabilities literature, the purpose of this paper is to investigate this eco-capability which fully leverages human, relationship, and technology resources.

Design/methodology/approach

Applying the NRBV and dynamic capabilities literature, this paper investigates this eco-capability which fully leverages human, relationship, and technology resources. Using survey data from staffs across 15 hospitals in north of Iran, researchers estimated a latent moderated structural model that provides support for these three resource components.

Findings

Results obtained from structural equation analysis revealed that human, technology, and relationship resources have positive impact on eco-capability. Also eco-capability has positive impact on market and financial performance and the perceived quality of the hospital’s offering.

Research limitations/implications

As the model consist just of three kinds of resources, future studies could include examining the effect of additional resources and other internal and external factors on eco-capability.

Practical implications

This paper includes suggestions for facility’s managers to develop environmental strategy in three areas: human, technology, and relationship resources.

Originality/value

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to develop frameworks to support implementation and competitive leveraging of distinct sustainable supply chain operations. This derives from conceptual definition of the dynamic capabilities required to support Hart’s (1995) natural-resource-based view resources in the supply chain.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual study uses qualitative content analysis to extract capabilities from review and analysis of literature related to natural-resource-based view (NRBV) and sustainable supply chain management. Intercoder reliability assessments support conceptual development of such capabilities into dynamic capability frameworks.

Findings

Specific interrelations between each NRBV resource and corresponding supply chain strategies are conceptualised. From this, capabilities are categorised to corresponding resources, dynamic capabilities activities and internal–external focus. This results in definition of 107 dynamic NRBV capabilities.

Research limitations/implications

Contributions are threefold: distinct frameworks for competitive sustainable supply chain management is offered; the NRBV benefits from enhanced practical guidance via the definition of its dynamic capabilities, addressing the theory-practice gap; and understandings of dynamic capabilities and their role in both the NRBV sustainable supply chain management is advanced.

Practical implications

This paper offers four frameworks to allow firms to tailor sustainability strategies to suit their needs and guide competitive leveraging. Definition of capabilities offers practical guidance to operationalise NRBV resources.

Originality/value

This is the first holistic interpretation of NRBV capabilities and explicit application of dynamic capabilities. This forms the basis of a broader research agenda for the NRBV in sustainable supply chain management.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the drivers of three main eco-innovation types within the manufacturing small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Egypt, as well as to examine the impact of these types in sustaining competitive advantage.

Design/methodology/approach

The positivist methodological paradigm is adopted in this study, with 183 valid questionnaires collected from the owners and executives of manufacturing SMEs. The SmartPLS has been used to analyse the data.

Findings

Results show that internal drivers (organisational capabilities, absorptive capacity and strategically environmental orientation) affect eco-innovation types. External drivers (regulation, eco-friendly products demand and competitive advantage) do not significantly affect eco-innovation types. The results also reveal that both eco-organisational and eco-process innovations significantly affect sustainable competitive advantage.

Practical implications

This study has presented valuable insights for owners and executives of SMEs and policymakers in the business and manufacturing industry.

Originality/value

This study has presented valuable insights for literature on eco-innovation, owners and executives of SMEs and policymakers manufacturing industry to depth-understanding of drivers of eco-innovation types. in addition, the role of eco-innovation types in sustaining competitive advantage for SMEs has been a significant contribution to eco-innovation literature.
