Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide a theoretical account of how firms make choices between dynamic capability-based and ad hoc problem-solving approaches toward strategic change.

Design/methodology/approach

A model has been developed to answer the questions of how and under what conditions firms develop appropriate approaches to handle strategic change.

Findings

Drawing upon structural inertia theory (SIT) and the resource-based view (RBV), the model predicts that firms, regardless of their age and size, are more likely to adopt an ad hoc problem-solving approach to handle change in both highly dynamic and low-dynamic environments. However, in moderately dynamic environments, a dynamic capability-based approach may be more appropriate, depending on which theoretical logic (SIT or RBV) the decision is made.

Originality/value

The paper builds on the useful distinction made by Winter (2003) in terms of the ways to handle organizational change and extends the recent research on temporary vs sustainable competitive advantages to investigate how firms tackle strategic change within the contexts of both environmental dynamism and organizational attributes.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the proposal of a Product Line (PL)-based approach for Business Process Management (BPM) projects that cover the entire BPM lifecycle and proposes integrating it with dynamic techniques still not used together.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors carried out this work using the design science research methodology. The authors assessed the proposed approach using a classification procedure created through a series of specific attributes, which enables a comparison of the proposed integrated approach with related works selected from a systematic literature review.

Findings

The comparative assessment has shown that the proposed approach presents the most comprehensive solution than any other similar one suggested for the same purpose, mainly in terms of the coverage of the entire BPM lifecycle and dynamic techniques.

Research limitations/implications

Due to the high-level conceptual nature of the proposed approach, the authors could not evaluate it also in terms of some controlled experiment or a case study.

Originality/value

The proposed approach aims at improving the management of business processes in organizations in a systematic way using concepts and techniques that exist in other areas, but not widely used together yet, such as BPM, service-oriented computing, and Software PL.

Purpose

The paper aims to analyse typology of dynamic management studies and their specificity.

Design/methodology/approach

The study analyses more than 200 studies published in English, French and Romanian management literature in the last 15 years. The data analysis follows a qualitative methodology.

Findings

The study provides: four classifications of the dynamic managerial approach and their specificity; and the main advantages and limits of dynamic management analysis.

Research limitations/implications

Further research should use the classifications, advantages and limits identified to investigate certain dynamic management analyses and formulate conclusions and recommendations for better dynamic managerial analysis.

Practical implications

The paper highlights the specificity of different types of dynamic management analyses, that are often underestimated by researchers, professors, managers, students etc. The findings could be used by management practitioners to better understand the management evolution and performance of different organizations, to elaborate company strategy and policy, to change organizational culture a.s.o.

Social implications

The increasement of social evaluation and prognosis quality.

Originality/value

In the international management literature, the paper provides the first classification of dynamic management studies and their specificity and the synthesis of the main advantages and limits of dynamic management studies for both management theoreticians and practitioners. These elements are useful to increase the value of dynamic management studies and to improve management practices in organizations.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the concept of translation equivalence in extant research on translation in accounting: What is the equivalence that is expected of translation, and how is it assumed to come into being? This paper presents a coherent, theoretically informed approach to how different views on equivalence are connected to the objective of international comparability in financial accounting and how related, often-underlying assumptions intertwine in this discussion.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper takes an interdisciplinary approach by utilizing equivalence theories from the discipline of translation studies. It canvasses two dichotomy-like approaches – natural versus directional equivalence and formal versus dynamic equivalence – to compose a theoretical framework within which to analyze 25 translation-related papers discussing accounting harmonization published from 1989 to 2018.

Findings

This paper presents evidence of theoretical contradictions likely to affect the development of translation research in accounting if they go unrecognized. Moreover, the analysis suggests that these contradictions are likely to originate in the assumptions of mainstream accounting research, which neglect both the constructed nature of equivalence and the socially constructed nature of accounting concepts.

Originality/value

Despite the significance of translation for the objective of international comparability, this paper is the first comprehensive theoretical approach to equivalence in accounting research. It responds to a recognized demand for studying equivalence and its limitations, challenges many of the expectations accounting research places on translation and discusses the possible origins of related assumptions.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to review, evaluate and classify the academic research that has been published in facility layout problems (FLPs) and to analyse how researches and practices on FLPs are.

Design/methodology/approach

The review is based on 166 papers published from 1953 to 2021 in international peer-reviewed journals. The literature review on FLPs is presented under broader headings of discrete space and continuous space FLPs. The important formulations of FLPs under static and dynamic environments represented in the discrete and continuous space are presented. The articles reported in the literature on various representations of facilities for the continuous space Unequal Area Facility Layout Problems (UA-FLPs) are summarized. Discussed and commented on adaptive and robust approaches for dynamic environment FLPs. Highlighted the application of meta-heuristic solution methods for FLPs of a larger size.

Findings

It is found that most of the earlier research adopted the discrete space for the formulation of FLPs. This type of space representation for FLPs mostly assumes an equal area for all facilities. UA-FLPs represented in discrete space yield irregular shape facilities. It is also observed that the recent works consider the UA-FLPs in continuous space. The solution of continuous space UA-FLPs is more accurate and realistic. Some of the recent works on UA-FLPs consider the flexible bay structure (FBS) due to its advantages over the other representations. FBS helps the proper design of aisle structure in the detailed layout plan. Further, the recent articles reported in the literature consider the dynamic environment for both equal and unequal area FLPs to cope with the changing market environment. It is also found that FLPs are Non-deterministic Polynomial-complete problems, and hence, they set the challenges to researchers to develop efficient meta-heuristic methods to solve the bigger size FLPs in a reasonable time.

Research limitations/implications

Due to the extremely large number of papers on FLPs, a few papers may have inadvertently been missed. The facility layout design research domain is extremely vast which covers other areas such as cellular layouts, pick and drop points and aisle structure design. This research review on FLPs did not consider the papers published on cellular layouts, pick and drop points and aisle structure design. Despite the possibility of not being all-inclusive, the authors firmly believe that most of the papers published on FLPs are covered and the general picture presented on various approaches and parameters of FLPs in this paper are precise and trustworthy.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper reviews and classifies the literature on FLPs for the first time under the broader headings of discrete space and continuous space representations. Many important formulations of FLPs under static and dynamic environments represented in the discrete and continuous space are presented. This paper also provides the observations from the literature review and identifies the prospective future directions.

Abstract

Purpose

Forecasting the future movement of yield curves contains valuable information for both academic and practical issues such as bonding pricing, portfolio management, and government policies. The purpose of this paper is to develop a dynamic factor approach that can provide more precise and consistent forecasting results under various yield curve dynamics.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper develops a unified dynamic factor model based on Diebold and Li (2006) and Nelson and Siegel (1987) three-factor model to forecast the future movement yield curves. The authors apply the state-space model and the Kalman filter to estimate parameters and extract factors from the US yield curve data.

Findings

The authors compare both in-sample and out-of-sample performance of the dynamic approach with various existing models in the literature, and find that the dynamic factor model produces the best in-sample fit, and it dominates existing models in medium- and long-horizon yield curve forecasting performance.

Research limitations/implications

The authors find that the dynamic factor model and the Kalman filter technique should be used with caution when forecasting short maturity yields on a short time horizon, in which the Kalman filter is prone to trade off out-of-sample robustness to maintain its in-sample efficiency.

Practical implications

Bond analysts and portfolio managers can use the dynamic approach to do a more accurate forecast of yield curve movements.

Social implications

The enhanced forecasting approach also equips the government with a valuable tool in setting macroeconomic policies.

Originality/value

The dynamic factor approach is original in capturing the level, slope, and curvature of yield curves in that the decay rate is set as a free parameter to be estimated from yield curve data, instead of setting it to be a fixed rate as in the existing literature. The difference range of estimated decay rate provides richer yield curve dynamics and is the key to stronger forecasting performance.

Abstract

Purpose

To propose and to evaluate a new genetic algorithm (GA) for solving the dynamic pickup and delivery problem with time windows (DPDPTW).

Design/methodology/approach

First, a grouping genetic algorithm (GGA) for the (static) PDPTW is described. In order to solve the dynamic problem, the GGA then is embedded in a rolling horizon framework. Special updating mechanisms are provided which assure that reusable solution knowledge is preserved over the plan revisions. The approach is evaluated using a large number of test instances with varying degrees of dynamism.

Findings

The experimental results have demonstrated that the proposed approach is able to find high‐quality solutions when compared with two comparative heuristics.

Research limitations/implications

Future research will be dedicated to the following issues: testing the proposed method using larger problem instances, using more sophisticated objective functions in order to further improve and evaluate the approach, integrating fast local search techniques into the genetic search, speeding up the algorithm by optimizing its implementation.

Practical implications

In order to meet the increasing demands on the flexibility and the promptness of transportation services, algorithms are needed for dispatching transportation requests that arrive dynamically during the planning period. The findings of this contribution justify the employment of GAs in such dynamic transportation planning environments.

Originality/value

Although the application of GAs in dynamic environments attracts growing attention, up to now no such algorithm has been published for the DPDPTW. To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first time a GA has been applied to the DPDPTW.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to explore how dynamic capabilities of sensing, seizing and reconfiguring shape the way in which service business is developed in a broad range of capital goods industries.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper takes an interpretative multiple‐case study approach. It seeks to develop primary organizing themes around the key dynamic capabilities and support them with research propositions.

Findings

The findings suggest that companies either exploit or explore the opportunities when it comes to service business development. Moreover, dynamic capabilities differ between the two approaches and predict which way a company chooses.

Research limitations/implications

Research limitations are mainly due to the nature of qualitative research. The dynamic capabilities identified here are by no means exhaustive; rather, they indicate directions for future research.

Practical implications

The research findings provide guidance to managers as to how the strategic shift towards services is influenced by dynamic capabilities.

Originality/value

Despite difficulties associated with service business development, the literature remains relatively silent on dynamic capabilities. However, dynamic capabilities are essential to the strategic shift towards service business.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of a dynamic analysis of the development and management of strategic capabilities and resources in manufacturing. It aims to present dynamic resource/capability systems as a means to understand an issue from manufacturing strategy.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study from a standard textbook on manufacturing strategy is used to illustrate the approach that is mainly based on Warren's strategy dynamics. Extensions to this approach are introduced.

Findings

Diagrams of dynamic resource/capability systems are valuable tools for understanding issues of interconnected and changing strategic resources and capabilities. Resources and capabilities can be interpreted as stocks in dynamic simulation models following ideas from system dynamics.

Research limitations/implications

The exact nature of strategic capabilities and their relationships needs to be further investigated. Approaches need to be developed to measure and to quantify these concepts. The connection between Hill's order winners/qualifiers and the inflows/outflows of capability and resource stocks should be further examined.

Practical implications

Static analyses of strategic issues are often difficult to interpret. The dynamic nature of strategic issues needs to be reflected in the tools used for analysing them.

Originality/value

Applies a dynamic analysis to manufacturing strategy and uses a textbook example in a new way to illustrate the relevance of the approach.

Abstract

Purpose

Considering the significant necessity of organization's conformity with environmental changes and also the importance of predicting the result of managerial decisions, this research has been accomplished with the purpose of designing a dynamic business model. In today's ever changing business environment, the simulation of different decision making scenarios is obligatory for managers in order to create the possibility of studying the effects of decision results on business model (BM) components, interrelation of component and total benefits in an organization. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to take advantage of the dynamic system approach as an operational, quantitative and flexible approach for business model simulation.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on this purpose, related literature was thoroughly reviewed and proportionate with the level of study and research approach, Business Model Ontology (BMO) was chosen. The model designed using the system dynamics approach and its structure was evaluated via expert judgment. In the next step, some scenarios were developed and executed to confirm the behavior of the model and also to evaluate the importance of applying the dynamic approach in business model simulation.

Findings

These results show that decision making for a BM change leads to complexities and dynamic behavior of business components and also other actor reactions which are usually nonlinear and complex. In this regard this paper suggests dynamic simulation utilization to predict and analyze the results.

Originality/value

The system dynamic approach has precedents in business studies; however, this research makes this approach operational in BM design and analysis.
