Abstract

Purpose

The usage of additive manufacturing (AM) technology in industries has reached up to 50 per cent as prototype or end-product. However, for AM products to be directly used as final products, AM product should be produced through advanced quality control process, which has a capability to be able to prove and reach their desire repeatability, reproducibility, reliability and preciseness. Therefore, there is a need to review quality-related research in terms of AM technology and guide AM industry in the future direction of AM development.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper overviews research progress regarding the QC in AM technology. The focus of the study is on manufacturing quality issues and needs that are to be developed and optimized, and further suggests ideas and directions toward the quality improvement for future AM technology. This paper is organized as follows. Section 2 starts by conducting a comprehensive review of the literature studies on progress of quality control, issues and challenges regarding quality improvement in seven different AM techniques. Next, Section 3 provides classification of the research findings, and lastly, Section 4 discusses the challenges and future trends.

Findings

This paper presents a review on quality control in seven different techniques in AM technology and provides detailed discussions in each quality process stage. Most of the AM techniques have a trend using in-situ sensors and cameras to acquire process data for real-time monitoring and quality analysis. Procedures such as extrusion-based processes (EBP) have further advanced in data analytics and predictive algorithms-based research regarding mechanical properties and optimal printing parameters. Moreover, compared to others, the material jetting progresses technique has advanced in a system integrated with closed-feedback loop, machine vision and image processing to minimize quality issues during printing process.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is limited to reviewing of only seven techniques of AM technology, which includes photopolymer vat processes, material jetting processes, binder jetting processes, extrusion-based processes, powder bed fusion processes, directed energy deposition processes and sheet lamination processes. This paper would impact on the improvement of quality control in AM industries such as industrial, automotive, medical, aerospace and military production.

Originality/value

Additive manufacturing technology, in terms of quality control has yet to be reviewed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to speculate how recent and emerging trends in information and communication technology (ICT) could change the way tourism businesses and organizations communicate with and manage their guests.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper applies elements of futures and design thinking to analyze current tourism management practices and identify critical touchpoints that link tourist decisions to management strategies.

Findings

Fictional travel stories were used to identify and analyze how technology might affect tourism through five touchpoints– choice, connection, co-creation, customization and compliance. These stories were analyzed to identify changing forces and suggest potential paradigm shifts that tourism managers need to consider. These included increasingly complex content, the importance of compatible connections, and the critical role of coordination and cooperation in future tourism systems.

Originality/value

While there have been numerous discussions of how tourists and tourism businesses access and use technology, there is little evidence of scholars and practitioners applying formal futures thinking to ICT and tourism. This paper used design thinking and stories to predict and illustrate ways in which technology could be embedded into tourism experiences and services. It suggests that technology can, and probably will, fundamentally change the way in which we manage tourists and their experiences.

This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.

Abstract

Caching is commonly used to improve the performance of mobile computers. Due to the limitations of wireless networks (e.g. low bandwidth, intermittent connectivity), ensuring the consistency of cached data becomes a difficult issue. Existing research have shown that broadcast‐based cache invalidation techniques can effectively maintain cache consistency for mobile applications. However, most existing performance analysis of cache invalidation algorithms were carried out through simulation. Therefore, an analytical study is important to provide a deeper understanding of broadcast‐based invalidation techniques. In this paper, we present detailed analytical models of the major existing cache invalidation schemes. The models provide a basis to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the different schemes and facilitate further investigation into cache invalidation for mobile environments. Extensive simulation has also been performed, and verifies the accuracy of the models developed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to present a new solution algorithm for updating of finite element models in structural dynamics. A random search method is applied to improving the correlation between the numerical simulation and the measured experimental data.

Design/methodology/approach

Dynamic finite element model updating may be considered as an optimization process. It is solved using modified accelerated random search (MARS) algorithm. The effectiveness of the approach is first tested on benchmark problems. Next, several objective function formulations for dynamic model updating in modal and frequency domains are investigated for numerically simulated vibrating beam. Finally, the algorithm is applied to a real beam‐like structure using measured modal data.

Findings

The MARS algorithm is able to provide very good results in a reduced time even for hard optimization problems. It behaves very well also for the FE dynamic model updating, highly coupled problems. The efficient updating criterion has been proposed and the approach has been validated experimentally.

Research limitations/implications

The method is supposed to be time consuming for large size or complicated objective function problems but the choice of optimization parameters can accelerate the convergence.

Practical implications

The MARS algorithm can be applied to model updating in civil and mechanical engineering.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to apply the MARS algorithm to the problem of FE model updating in dynamics and enables one to obtain very good results. Efficient criteria for model updating have been proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

Discrete choice modeling has been discussed by both academics and practitioners as a means of analytical support for B2C relationship marketing. This paper aims to discuss applying this analytical framework in B2B marketing, with an example of cross‐selling high‐tech services to a large business customer. This example is also used to show how an algorithm of genetic binary choice (GBC) modeling, developed by the author, performs in comparison with major techniques used nowadays, and to analyze the financial impact of these different approaches on profitability of B2B relationship marketing operations.

Design/methodology/approach

Predictive models based on the regression analysis, the classification tree and the GBC algorithm are built and analyzed in the context of their performance in optimizing cross‐selling campaigns. An example of business case analysis is used to estimate the financial implications of the different approaches.

Findings

B2B relationship marketing, although differing from B2C in many aspects, can also benefit from analytical support with discrete choice modeling. The financial impact of such support is significant, and can be further increased by improving the predictive accuracy of the models. In this context the GBC modeling algorithm proves to be an interesting alternative to the algorithms used nowadays.

Research limitations/implications

The generalizability of the findings, concerning performance characteristics of the algorithms, is limited: which method is best depends, for example, on data distributions and the particular relationships being modeled.

Practical implications

The paper shows how B2B marketing managers can increase the profitability of relationship marketing using discrete choice modeling, and how implementing new algorithms like the GBC model presented here can allow for further improvement.

Originality/value

The paper bridges the gap between research on binary choice modeling and the practice of B2B relationship marketing. It presents a new possibility of analytical support for B2B marketing operations together with financial implications. It also includes a demonstration of an algorithm newly developed by the author.

Abstract

Purpose

The quality and quantity of data are vital for the effectiveness of problem solving. Nowadays, big data analytics, which require managing an immense amount of data rapidly, has attracted more and more attention. It is a new research area in the field of information processing techniques. It faces the big challenges and difficulties of a large amount of data, high dimensionality, and dynamical change of data. However, such issues might be addressed with the help from other research fields, e.g., swarm intelligence (SI), which is a collection of nature-inspired searching techniques. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the potential application of SI in big data analytics is analyzed. The correspondence and association between big data analytics and SI techniques are discussed. As an example of the application of the SI algorithms in the big data processing, a commodity routing system in a port in China is introduced. Another example is the economic load dispatch problem in the planning of a modern power system.

Findings

The characteristics of big data include volume, variety, velocity, veracity, and value. In the SI algorithms, these features can be, respectively, represented as large scale, high dimensions, dynamical, noise/surrogates, and fitness/objective problems, which have been effectively solved.

Research limitations/implications

In current research, the example problem of the port is formulated but not solved yet given the ongoing nature of the project. The example could be understood as advanced IT or data processing technology, however, its underlying mechanism could be the SI algorithms. This paper is the first step in the research to utilize the SI algorithm to a big data analytics problem. The future research will compare the performance of the method and fit it in a dynamic real system.

Originality/value

Based on the combination of SI and data mining techniques, the authors can have a better understanding of the big data analytics problems, and design more effective algorithms to solve real-world big data analytical problems.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose efficient algorithms for structural grouping over Extensible Markup Language (XML) data, called TOPOLOGICAL ROLLUP (T‐ROLLUP), which are to compute aggregation functions based on XML data with multiple hierarchical levels. They play important roles in the online analytical processing of XML data, called XML‐OLAP, with which complex analysis over XML can be performed to discover valuable information from XML.

Design/methodology/approach

Several variations of algorithms are proposed for efficient T‐ROLLUP computation. First, two basic algorithms, top‐down algorithm (TDA) and bottom‐up algorithm (BUA), are presented in which the well‐known structural‐join algorithms are used. The paper then proposes more efficient algorithms, called single‐scan by preorder number and single‐scan by postorder number (SSC‐Pre/Post), which are also based on structural joins, but have been modified from the basic algorithms so that multiple levels of grouping are computed with a single scan over node lists. In addition, the paper attempts to adopt the algorithm for parallel execution in multi‐core environments.

Findings

Several experiments are conducted with XMark and synthetic XML data to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms. The experiments show that proposed algorithms perform much better than the naïve implementation. In particular, the proposed SSC‐Pre and SSC‐Post perform better than TDA and BUA for all cases. Beyond that, the experiment using the parallel single scan algorithm also shows better performance than the ordinary basic algorithm.

Research limitations/implications

This paper focuses on the T‐ROLLUP operation for XML data analysis. For this reason, other operations related to XML‐OLAP, such as CUBE, WINDOWING, and RANKING should also be investigated.

Originality/value

The paper presents an extended version of one of the award winning papers at iiWAS2008.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide an analytical model for low carbon supplier development. This study is focused on the level of investment and collaboration decisions pertaining to emission reduction.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors’ model includes a fuzzy c-means (FCM) clustering algorithm and a fuzzy formal concept analysis. First, a set of suppliers were classified according to their carbon performances through the FCM clustering algorithm. Then, the fuzzy formal concepts were derived from a set of fuzzy formal contexts through an intersection-based method. These fuzzy formal concepts provide the relative level of investments and collaboration decisions for each identified supplier cluster. A case from the Indian renewable energy sector was used for illustration of the proposed analytical model.

Findings

The proposed model and case illustration may help manufacturing firms to collaborate with their suppliers for improving their carbon performances.

Research limitations/implications

The study contributes to the low carbon supply chain management literature by identifying the decision criteria of investments toward low carbon supplier development. It also provides an analytical model of collaboration for low carbon supplier development. Though the purpose of the study is to illustrate the proposed analytical model, it would have been better if the model was empirically validated.

Originality/value

Though the earlier studies on green supplier development program evaluation have considered a set of criteria to decide whether or not to invest on suppliers, these are silent on the relative level of investment required for a given set of suppliers. This study aims to fulfill this gap by providing an analytical model that will help a manufacturing firm to invest and collaborate with its suppliers for improving their carbon performance.
