Abstract

Purpose

Quality management systems (QMSs) are well established in multinationals and small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs). For establishing and improving these systems, a variety of guidelines have been established. Furthermore, there are software tools allowing a self-assessment of the current state of the implemented systems. However, these approaches are not appropriate for microenterprises and start-ups as their processes are rather informal or not yet specified. Moreover, these companies are often in a phase of strong growth and have only one person in charge; hence, they face the difficulty to decide if and how a QMS should be implemented. The purpose of this study is to report a first guideline for implementation of a QMS for microenterprises and start-ups.

Design/methodology/approach

The first step comprises a definition of microenterprises and start-ups and an analysis of their specific characteristics. An overview of the DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and its requirements is given below. Next, the relevant requirements that can be implemented in microenterprises and start-ups are analyzed. Accordingly, a guideline for decision-making is developed to examine if an application of the analyzed standard is useful or necessary for these companies. Moreover, the guideline illustrates how the requirements can be implemented.

Findings

A literature review, an analysis of the DIN EN ISO 9001:2015, and of microenterprises and start-ups have been carried out. Thus, the need to decide whether to implement a QMS and assistance for the implementation process has been revealed to be essential for the companies that were considered. The literature mostly deals with implementing a quality and/or project management system in multinationals and SMEs but not for very small companies. Furthermore, the practical examples have shown that microenterprises face difficulties when choosing and implementing a QMS; thus, a practical implementation guideline for these companies is lacking.

Originality/value

Although there is a lot of research dealing with quality management (QM) in SMEs, research about QM in microenterprises and start-ups is scarce. This paper offers a first approach for a guideline of implementing an appropriate QMS and possibly an additional or alternative project management system in microenterprises and start-ups. This should facilitate the process of deciding if and how to implement an adequate management system for such companies.

Purpose

Quality management systems are well established in multinationals and SMEs. For establishing and improving such systems, there is a variety of guidelines. Furthermore, there are software tools allowing a self-assessment of the current state of the implemented systems. However, these approaches do not fit for micro-enterprises and start-ups. Their processes are rather informal or not yet specified. Moreover, these companies are often in a phase of strong growth and have only one person in charge. Hence, they face the difficulty to decide if and how a (quality) management system should be implemented. This paper aims to show a first guideline for implementation.

Design/methodology/approach

The first step comprises a definition of microenterprises and start-ups and an analysis of their specific characteristics. Following, an overview of the DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 and its requirements is given. Next, it is analysed which requirements are relevant for or can be implemented in microenterprises and start-ups. Based on this, a guideline for decision-making is developed to examine if an application of the analysed standard is useful or necessary for the regarded companies. Also, the guideline illustrates how the requirements can be implemented.

Findings

A literature review, an analysis of the DIN EN ISO 9001:2015, the standards for project management, microenterprises and start-ups have been carried out. Thereby, the need to decide whether to implement implement a quality management system and assistance for the implementation process has been revealed as essential for the companies considered. Abstract

The revised ISO 9001 requires companies fundamentally to restructure their existing quality management system and to adapt it to the processes taking place in the individual company. In this context, it is of utmost importance not only to identify current weak points but also to retain the positive effects of the present quality management system. Based on the results of an empirical survey, this article outlines the main weak points the companies had named which are therefore points of departure in eliminating them. The article demonstrates that the new requirements of ISO 9001 do not present many companies with a difficult challenge, because they are already able to fulfil them.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is the further development of an Excel-based integrated management system for the tool and cutlery industry regarding sustainability. The tool’s actual status allows integrating and implementing requirements considering work safety, environmental and quality management and a self-assessment for checking the level of requirements’ fulfilment. However, the topic of sustainability and requirements and risks going along with it are of great importance for the mostly small and medium companies of this industry. Therefore, the Excel-tool is being enhanced by integrating the requirements of risk, energy and sustainability management. The paper presents the advanced Excel-tool.

Design/methodology/approach

The base for advancing the Excel-tool has been analysing the status quo of sustainability management in the companies. Moreover, a matrix for comparing the requirements has been enlarged regarding the standards for sustainability, risk and energy management and builds the base for further developing of the Excel-tool.

Findings

This analysis has shown the need for action, regarding the topic of sustainability. Hence, the Excel-tool has been enlarged regarding the assessment of fulfilling the requirements of different management systems. It allows small- and medium-sized enterprises a detection of need for action to comply with the requirements of different management systems with minimal afford. By this, an easily evaluation and improvement of the companies’ management systems is enabled.

Originality/value

The tool enables companies to easily evaluate the state of their integrated management system by themselves and assists when implementing additional management systems.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe the state-of-the-art in ISO 9001 research in healthcare service sector and propose the future research agenda.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive literature review of the ISO 9001 studies in healthcare service sector was carried out.

Findings

The effectiveness of ISO 9001 implementation in healthcare service sector is still not clear. Previous researches show common stages for implementing ISO 9001 in a healthcare service organization. However, there is no previous research that reveals the content of the system implemented. In addition, there is no previous research that reveals the interpretation of ISO 9001 based on the practice of ISO 9001 implementation in an organization. Based on the review, eight future research agendas were proposed.

Originality/value

The paper is believed to be the first to discuss the state-of-the-art of ISO 9001 researches in healthcare service sector.

Abstract

Purpose

Against statutory duties to introduce quality management systems, the increased importance of this subject has led to numerous activities in various public health institutions. Following the International Standardization Organization (ISO 9001:2000) prerequisites, Frankfurt Goethe University Hospital ENT clinic staff introduced a quality management system. This paper aims to investigate this process.

Design/methodology/approach

Designing, planning and implementing the quality management system is described. Under the supervision of an executive quality management board, clinic quality goals were defined. Thereafter, several quality management teams performed an actual state analysis as well as developing and realising improvement proposals. Finally a quality management manual containing binding standards and working instructions concerning all patient care, research and teaching aspects was written.

Findings

Successful certification by a neutral body ascertained that the clinic's quality management system conformed to current national and international standards while restructuring and reform improved procedural efficiency.

Originality/value

The paper shows that mplementing the quality management system requires considerable effort but patients as well as staff profit considerably from the innovation. On the whole, the positive impact on structure and workflow in a specialist clinic predominates. Therefore, implementing a quality management system in all the clinic's wards and departments is recommended.

Abstract

Making Fine Powders ‐ Extremely fine and uniform particles, of 5–50 nanometers, have been produced by a process being developed at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories. Researchers have used the technique to synthesize new, highly dispersed catalysts with a high surface area. It offers a way to make other products which have improved properties: ceramic ball bearings and gears which are stronger and more durable than those available today, and pigments for paints and inks.

The purpose of this paper is to integrate process complexity as an object of analysis within effective quality management (QM).

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to integrate process complexity as an object of analysis within effective quality management (QM).

Design/methodology/approach

This paper systematically analyzes different conceptions of complexity theory and characterizes process complexity from a QM perspective producing new insights how to address process complexity for continuous improvement.

Findings

The authors identified and specified four complexity characteristics, which we integrated in a holistic process complexity model (PCM). The author further developed the idea of internal and external process complexity and demonstrated that internal complexity needs to balance external complexity. Based on the PCM, internal process complexity can be analyzed and suitable management approaches can be selected, while conventional QM practices showed to be inefficient or even contra-productive when applied in the context of process complexity.

Research limitations/implications

This research is adapted to fit the needs of production processes. The PCM is designed from a QM perspective.

Practical implications

The developed model allows companies to specify and characterize process complexity in order to reflect on the appropriateness of their process management approaches. Furthermore, it gives an additional perspective on process analysis for tapping the full potential of process improvement programs.

Originality/value

This paper combines complexity theory with QM.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper focuses on the use of ISO 9000 standards for the introduction of quality management in information services, with a special emphasis on the Brazilian experience, aiming to provide support to information services managers in the use of quality management.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is based on a comprehensive review of the literature, from the earliest citations to those published more recently, principally articles relating to the application of quality programs in Brazilian information services.

Findings

The paper presents and discusses the main benefits (ordered according to the eight principles of quality management), the concerns and the difficulties of the use of ISO 9000 mentioned by the analyzed literature.

Research limitations/implications

Although the literature describes several practical experiences and theoretical studies that analyze the application of ISO 9000 in information services, each organization has its own typical characteristics and their internal and external environments may differ, helping or making it more difficult to implement projects related to quality management.

Practical implications

The paper observes a general predisposition towards the principles defined on the ISO 9000 standard series, which can be used as a parameter to guide and support quality improvement initiatives.

Originality/value

The research supports the idea that ISO 9000 standards are a guideline for the implementation of quality management in organizations of different types and sizes. The exponential growth on the number of ISO 9000 certificates in Brazil has created a scenario that has certainly favoured the option of several information services towards the ISO 9000 standard series.
