Abstract

Recent scholarship has focused on the schooling experiences of Black boys in early childhood; however research on the experiences and outcomes of Black girls in early childhood remains virtually nonexistent. More research is needed to ensure that every Black girl excels in early childhood education. Through three reflections from Black early educators, written iteratively through a process of reflection, discussion, writing, and revision, this chapter highlights aspects of Black girls' schooling that can promote Black girls' rapidly developing social, emotional, regulatory, and moral capacities. Within each reflection, the educator's advance our understanding of culturally relevant pedagogy by showing how educators can “teach to and through” Black girls’ funds of knowledge. Additionally, the reflections highlight the powerful role schools play in the lives of Black girls, underscoring the need to more deeply investigate teacher's perceptions of Black girls in addition to the positive and the negative policies and practices enacted in classrooms. The chapter concludes with critical and timely recommendations for research, practice, and policy.

Abstract

The effect of structural damping on panel flutter has received little treatment in the literature but the available information suggests that such an effect may be destabilizing. By considering a two‐dimensional, simply‐supported panel and using linear piston theory for the aerodynamic forces an analysis is presented in which the effect of hysteretic structural damping is considered. The main emphasis is on flat unbuckled panels, although a brief investigation of buckled panels is also presented, and it is concluded that there is an interdependence of structural and aerodynamic damping, which in the range of Mach numbers for which piston theory is valid, shows the destabilizing effect of structural damping. This effect is apparently more pronounced at high altitudes. A comprehensive bibliography of panel flutter is also included.

Abstract

Purpose

To explore how young men operating within influential discursive regimes construct their identity projects and come to know themselves through their engagement with consumption and leisure practices.

Methodology/approach

Foucauldian theory is drawn upon to conceptualise men as intertwined within their social environs, the recipients of socio-cultural inscription. By situating the micro-social context of the male consumer in a larger socio-cultural context, this study endeavours to go beyond consumer narratives to incorporate the influence of market and social systems on individuals’ identity work.

Findings

This study shows how identity projects are subject to the workings of power coursing through social networks. Individuals prescribing to a particular identity become subjected to the regulatory mechanisms of their community. However it is shown how subjectification operates differently in the highly structured community of sport compared to the less structured community of a hometown dwelling.

Social implications

This sociological perspective on men’s identity practices highlights the dynamic power forces penetrating social communities, in turn showing the necessity for consumer researchers to anchor the individual consumer experience within their influential environment to gain a more robust understanding of consumer behaviours and consumption practices.

Originality/value of paper

This paper explores the individual’s constructions of identity as situated within historically and locally particular cultural practices. This approach allows a better understanding of how consumers negotiate the world around them, keeping in mind the socio-cultural forces that serve to constrain and enable their activity, both in their daily lives and in the marketplace.

Abstract

Social scientists often speculate that both acculturation and socioeconomic status are factors that may explain differences in the body weight between Mexican Americans and whites and between Mexican Americans and Mexican immigrants, yet prior research has not explicitly theorized and tested the pathways that lead both of these upstream factors to contribute to ethnic/nativity disparities in weight. We make this contribution to the literature by developing a conceptual model drawing from Glass and McAtee’s (2006) risk regulation framework. We test this model by analyzing data from the 1999–2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Our conceptual model treats acculturation and socioeconomic status as risk regulators, or social factors that place individuals in positions where they are at risk for health risk behaviors that negatively influence health outcomes. We specifically argue that acculturation and low socioeconomic status contribute to less healthy diets, lower physical activity, and chronic stress, which then increases the risk of weight gain. We further contend that pathways from ethnicity/nativity and through acculturation and socioeconomic status likely explain disparities in weight gain between Mexican Americans and whites and between Mexican immigrants and whites. Study results largely support our conceptual model and have implications for thinking about solutions for reducing ethnic/nativity disparities in weight.

THE outer surfaces of aircraft are often constructed of thin sheet panels attached to a ‘rigid’ inner framework. Acting on such panels are the lateral forces due to air pressure and inertia, and there are mid‐plane forces due to aerodynamic heating or internal pressurization effects. Due to this combination of forces it appears that such panels can suffer either static or dynamic deformations known, respectively, as panel divergence and flutter.

Abstract

The present paper deals with the numerical calculation of the behaviour of vertical wind‐loaded cylindrical shells (large liquid storage tanks) with a very flexible bottom plate resting on an elastic foundation. The base of the tank, i.e. the lower boundary of the shell and the bottom plate, may partially uplift due to the shell deformations under the dead load, a hydrostatic pressure and due to wind forces. This behaviour represents non‐linear boundary conditions of the tank wall. Hence, the stability of the wind‐loaded tank is extremely influenced by the uplift conditions. This non‐linear problem (large deformations and variable contact) is solved by the FE method.
