Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify corrosion types and corrosion transitions by a novel electrochemical noise analysis method based on Adaboost.

Design/methodology/approach

The corrosion behavior of Q235 steel was investigated in typical passivation, uniform corrosion and pitting solution by electrochemical noise. Nine feature parameters were extracted from the electrochemical noise data based on statistical analysis and shot noise theory. The feature parameters were analysis by Adaboost to train model and identify corrosion types. The trained Adaboost model was used to identify corrosion type transitions.

Findings

Adaboost algorithm can accurately identify the corrosion type, and the accuracy rate is 99.25%. The identification results of Adaboost for the corrosion type are consistent with corroded morphology analysis. Compared with other machine learning, Adaboost can identify corrosion types more accurately. For corrosion type transition, Adaboost can effectively identify the transition from passivation to uniform corrosion and from passivation to pitting corrosion consistent with corroded morphology analysis.

Originality/value

Adaboost is a suitable method for prediction of corrosion type and transitions. Adaboost can establish the classification model of metal corrosion, which can more conveniently and accurately explore the corrosion types. Adaboost provides important reference for corrosion prediction and protection.

Abstract

Selecting the most suitable, cost‐efficient alloy for a given application should not be difficult if the methodology described in this paper is followed. The first step is to identify those alloys with the desired corrosion resistance. Factors other than chemical composition have a bearing on an alloy’s corrosion resistance. Service environment and nature of the product application must also be considered. These conditions are discussed in the text. Consideration should be given to other key issues such as mechanical properties required as well as method of fabrication, design, condition and availability of the candidate alloy. To simplify selection, the author discusses severe corrodents and aggressive environments that are commonly encountered in the process industries, and describes the characteristics of alloys that might be considered for each type of corrosive service. Cross referenced charts position these alloys to show their relative resistance to each type of corrosion attack. While the paper is not designed to replace the technical expertise of a corrosion engineer, the author feels it can serve as a good starting point in the alloy selection process.

Generally, of all the properties, corrosion resistance can be a prime consideration in determining whether a given alloy or metal is adequate for a proposed use. With the increasing ability to fabricate many alloys and metals into fibre material of extremely small diameter, a better knowledge of their chemical properties as related to their unique size becomes more essential since many of the potential applications involve exposure to corrosive environments. Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a theoretical basis to evaluate the suitability and integrity of corrosion pipes.

Design/methodology/approach

The three-dimensional models of the P110S oil pipe with local corrosion damage, general corrosion damage, pitting corrosion damage are established based on the API 579 standard using the nonlinear finite element analysis method for parametric research.

Findings

The reliability of the model is verified based on the experimental data from the existing literature. The effects of the oil pipe’s size and the corrosion damage’s type on the residual internal pressure strength are simulated and obtained. What’s more, a basic method for predicting the remaining life of corrosion damaged pipes is proposed.

Originality/value

The authors evaluated the residual strength of various corroded tubing, compared the tubing with different corrosion types and proposed a basic method for predicting the remaining life of the corroded tubing from the corrosion depth.

Abstract

Several process stages in the pulp and paper industry are undergoing changes. This is done partly for optimization, and partly to discontinue the use of substances hazardous to the environment. A side effect of these measures is that the problem of corrosion has increased. Explains why certain environments in the pulp and paper industry represent corrosion risks, with some examples given of corrosion failures, and suggests appropriate materials for these process stages.

Fixed‐roof, as well as floating‐roof tanks, are considered. Methods for corrosion prevention and control are discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to verify the capability of pigmented coatings to mitigate the effects of thermal sensitisation of 430 stainless steel.

Design/methodology/approach

Experimental weld joints of non‐stabilised ferritic corrosion resistant steel type AISI 430 were prepared. Protective coatings in several variants were applied to a number of weldments, subsequently subject to corrosion tests in SO2 and NaCl. The anticorrosive efficiency of the coatings was evaluated by means of normative visual assessment and metallographic analysis of the mechanism and depth of corrosion damage.

Findings

Anticorrosive efficiency of the tested coatings was experimentally established under conditions where differences were identified in structural changes caused by welding, or resulting from mechanical damage to the coating. Differences in the progress of corrosion damage caused by phase changes in the heat‐affected zone were established.

Practical implications

Tests of anticorrosive efficiency of coatings of selected types provided information about possible reduction in sensitisation of welded non‐stabilised steel. The effect of the investigated processes on degradation of anticorrosive resistance was identified.

Originality/value

A specific effect of phase changes accompanying welding on the corrosion mechanism was described and so were the reasons underlying development of corrosion damage at visually identical character of surface damage.
