Abstract

Since the first Volume of this Bibliography there has been an explosion of literature in all the main areas of business. The researcher and librarian have to be able to uncover specific articles devoted to certain topics. This Bibliography is designed to help. Volume III, in addition to the annotated list of articles as the two previous volumes, contains further features to help the reader. Each entry within has been indexed according to the Fifth Edition of the SCIMP/SCAMP Thesaurus and thus provides a full subject index to facilitate rapid information retrieval. Each article has its own unique number and this is used in both the subject and author index. The first Volume of the Bibliography covered seven journals published by MCB University Press. This Volume now indexes 25 journals, indicating the greater depth, coverage and expansion of the subject areas concerned.

Abstract

Presents the analysis of a two‐unit cold standby system in which the standby unit takes a random amount of time for operation whenever the operative unit fails. Each unit is first repaired by the assistant repairman and is then taken up for post‐repair if necessary. The failure and repair times of each unit are assumed to be correlated and their joint density is taken as bivariate exponential. Uses regenerative point technique to obtain various reliability characteristics of interest. Studies the behaviour of steady‐state availability through graphs. Verifies earlier results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore numerical scrutinization of micropolar and Walters-B non-Newtonian fluids motion under the influence of thermal radiation and chemical reaction.

Design/methodology/approach

The two fluids micropolar and Walters-B liquid are considered to start flowing from the slot to the stretching sheet. A magnetic field of constant strength is imposed on their flow transversely. The problems on heat and mass transport are set up with thermal, chemical reaction, heat generation, etc. to form partial differential equations. These equations were simplified into a dimensionless form and solved using spectral homotopy analysis method (SHAM). SHAM uses the basic concept of both Chebyshev pseudospectral method and homotopy analysis method to obtain numerical computations of the problem.

Findings

The outcomes for encountered flow parameters for temperature, velocity and concentration are presented with the aid of figures. It is observed that both the velocity and angular velocity of micropolar and Walters-B and thermal boundary layers increase with increase in the thermal radiation parameter. The decrease in velocity and decrease in angular velocity occurred are a result of increase in chemical reaction. It is hoped that the present study will enhance the understanding of boundary layer flow of micropolar and Walters-B non-Newtonian fluid under the influences of thermal radiation, thermal conductivity and chemical reaction as applied in various engineering processes.

Originality/value

All results are presented graphically and all physical quantities are computed and tabulated.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impacts of higher memory dependencies on a novel semiconductor material that exhibits generalized photo-piezo-thermo-elastic properties. Specifically, the research focuses on analyzing the behavior of the semiconductor under three distinct temperature models.

Design/methodology/approach

The study assumes a homogeneous and orthotropic piezo-semiconductor medium during photo-thermal excitation. The field equations have been devised to encompass higher order parameters, temporal delays and a specifically tailored kernel function to address the problem. The eigenmode technique is used to solve these equations and derive analytical expressions.

Findings

The research presents graphical representations of the physical field distribution across different temperatures, higher order plasma heat conduction models and time. The results reveal that the amplitude of the distribution profile is markedly affected by factors such as the memory effect, time, conductive temperature and spatial coordinates. These factors cannot be overlooked in the analysis and design of the semiconductor.

Research limitations/implications

Specific cases are also discussed in detail, offering the potential to advance the creation of precise models and facilitate future simulations.

Practical implications

The research offers valuable information on the physical field distribution across various temperatures, allowing engineers and designers to optimize the design of semiconductor devices. Understanding the impact of memory effect, time, conductive temperature and spatial coordinates enables device performance and efficiency improvement.

Originality/value

This manuscript is the result of the joint efforts of the authors, who independently initiated and contributed equally to this study.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore and prioritize the barriers that affect weather index-insurance (WII) adoption among customers by utilizing interpretive structural modelling (ISM) and fuzzy-MICMAC.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper utilized the combined approach in two phases. In first phase comprehensive literature study and expert mining method have been performed to identify and validate WII adoption barriers. In second phase, ISM has been utilized to examine the direct relationships among WII adoption barriers in order to develop a structural model. Further, fuzzy-MICMAC method has been utilized to analyse indirect relationships among barriers to explore dependence and driver power.

Findings

This study has identified 15 key barriers of WII adoption among customers and developed a structural model based on binary direct relationship using ISM. Later, the outcomes of ISM model have been utilized for analysing the dependence and driver power of each WII adoption barriers in cluster form using fuzzy-MICMAC. The customer awareness related WII adoption barrier are mainly at the top level, WII demand related barriers are in the centre and WII supply related barriers at the bottom level in ISM model.

Practical implications

The findings offered important insights for WII insurers to understand mutual relationships amongst WII adoption barriers and assists in developing strategy to eliminate dominant key barriers in order to enhance their customer base.

Originality/value

Based on best of author's knowledge this paper firstly integrates the ISM fuzzy-MICMAC method into identification and prioritization of barriers that affects WII adoption among customers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a model for a target searching problem in a two-dimensional region with time constraints. The proposed model facilitates the search operation by minimizing the mission time and fuel usage, and the search operation is performed by a set of agents divided into a number of groups.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have applied optimization techniques, Cartesian product, inclusion–exclusion principle, cooperative strategy, Shapley value, fuzzy Shapley function and Choquet integral to model the problem.

Findings

The proposed technique optimizes the placement of base stations that minimizes the sortie length of the agents. The results show that the cooperative strategy outperforms the non-cooperative strategy. The Shapley values quantify the rewards of each group based on their contributions to the search operation, whereas the fuzzy Shapley values determine the rewards of each group based on their contributions and level of cooperation in the search operation.

Practical implications

The proposed model can be applied to model many real-time problems such as patrolling in international borders, urban areas, forests and managing rescue operations after natural calamities, etc. Therefore, defence organizations, police departments and other operation management sectors will be benefitted by applying the proposed approach.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, determining the optimal locations of base stations in a region is not explored in the existing works on target searching problems with fuel constraints. The proposed approach to cooperatively search the targets in a region is new. Introducing the Shapley function and fuzzy Shapley function is a novel idea to quantify the rewards of each group based on their contributions and level of cooperation in the search operation. This paper addresses these unexplored areas.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report the effects of radiation absorption and buoyancy forces on the boundary layer analysis of Casson nanofluid past a vertical plate in a porous enclosure filled with Al50Cu50 alloy nanoparticles.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors reconstructed the controlling equations as a group of nonlinear ODEs and solved analytically using perturbation technique. The vital interest in this analysis is to examine the influence of sundry physical parameters on the common profiles (velocity, temperature and concentration) conferred through the plots. Tabular values are listed to discuss the skin friction factor, heat and mass transfer rates. Dual solutions are observed for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid cases.

Findings

Acquired results indicate that the Casson fluid plays a major role in controlling heat and mass transfer rates as compared with Newtonian fluid. Also, raise in volume fraction of nanoparticles regulates the thermal fields, discerns the velocity fields. The authors established the comparison of present results with previously published results and they are found in good agreement for limited cases.

Originality/value

Because of the substantial properties of aluminium and its alloys such as, extreme corrosion resistance, exalted electrical and thermal conductivities and ease of fabrication they achieved tremendous applications in transportation especially in space and aircrafts, in the production of electrical transmission lines. In view of these, the current literature is perpetrated to probe the impact of radiation absorption and buoyancy forces on the heat and mass transfer analysis of Casson nanofluid in the presence of Al50Cu50 alloy nanoparticles.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the momentum, heat and mass transfer characteristics of magnetic-nanofluid flow past a vertical plate embedded in a porous medium filled with ferrous nanoparticles. The analysis is carried out in the presence of pertinent physical parameters such as aligned magnetic field, thermal radiation, chemical reaction, radiation absorption, heat source/sink.

Design/methodology/approach

The flow governing PDEs are transformed into ODEs using appropriate conversions. Further, the set of ODEs is solved analytically using the perturbation technique. The flow quantities such as velocity, thermal and concentration fields are discussed under the influence of above-mentioned pertinent physical parameters with the assistance of graphical depictions. Moreover, the friction factor, local Nusselt and Sherwood number are discussed in tabular form.

Findings

The results indicate that flow and thermal transport phenomenon is more effective in the case of the aligned magnetic field as compared with the transverse magnetic field. Also, the nanoparticle volume fraction plays a vital role in controlling the wall friction and heat transfer performance. The validation of the obtained results is done by comparing them with the results of various numerical techniques, and hence found them in excellent agreement.

Originality/value

In present days, the external magnetic fields are very effective to set the thermal and physical properties of magnetic-nanofluids and regulate the flow and heat transfer characteristics. The strength of the applied magnetic field affects the thermal conductivity of magnetic-nanofluids and makes it aeolotropic. With this incentive, the authors investigated the flow and heat transfer characteristics of electrically conducting magnetic-nanofluids over a vertical surface embedded in a porous medium. The authors discussed the dual nature of ferrous-water nanofluid in the presence of aligned magnetic field and transverse magnetic field cases. The influence of several physical parameters on velocity, thermal and concentration field converses with the succour of graphs.
