Abstract

Purpose

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes is a puzzle-based video game that allows Leadership educators to facilitate a highly interactive and behaviorally intense experience within a traditional classroom environment. In this manuscript, we discuss appropriate use cases, curricular alignments and provide a sample lesson plan outlining one way of using the game.

Design/methodology/approach

The cooperative and team-based nature of this game provides opportunities to create interactive lessons on a variety of topics, such as communication, group dynamics, leadership, conflict strategies and cognitive load.

Findings

Our primary reflection is that this game provides a good balance between fun engagement and rigorous learning. While deploying this game in several leadership and psychology courses, students have shown excitement and enthusiasm about playing the game, especially when we have built up some anticipation for it while discussing cognitive load theory (CLT) or other content in the classes leading up to the experience.

Originality/value

The game provides a unique behavioral experience that is useful in several different educational outlets. Fundamentally, the game provides the opportunity for creating three dynamics among small groups of students: cognitive overload, intergroup stress and conflict and communication in stressful environments. Each of these three could be applicable in various courses and curriculum.

Abstract

Purpose

The traditional VeoVa10-VAc copolymer latex, which prepared via the emulsion polymerization of the mixed monomers of VAc and VeoVa10, has the poor water resistance and thermal stability because of the migration of the conventional emulsifier molecules and the low bond energy of C-C bond. The purpose of this work is that the fluorinated monomer is used to modify the latex. The film of the resultant latex has the C-F bond with high bond energy and low surface energy, which can effectively improve the heat resistance and water resistance of the resultant film. In addition, the reactive emulsifier is used to replace the conventional emulsifier. The drawbacks of the conventional emulsifier molecules migrate and desorb can be avoided when the polymer latex is stored, thereby also improving the water resistance.

Design/methodology/approach

The modified VAc-VeoVa10 latex has been successfully synthesized via the semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization, which VAc and VeoVa10 is used as the main monomers and HFMA was used as the functional monomer. KPS and reactive surfactants of SE-10 were used as the initiator and emulsifier, respectively. The structure of resultant latex film was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The latex films were tested by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and contact angle (CA). The particle size and its distribution of the latex were measured by the nano particle size analyzer.

Findings

The factors that had an influence on the properties of the latex and the film were investigated in detail. The stability of the resultant latex is good. The average particles of the latex and its distribution are small and uniform, respectively. In comparison with the conventional latex film, the thermal stability and hydrophobicity of the resultant latex film are improved obviously.

Practical implications

The resultant latex can be used in both the waterborne interior and exterior wall coatings, pickering stabilized waterborne polymer dispersions, polymer powders, environmentally friendly polymer-modified waterproof mortar and other fields, which can be satisfied with the high demand of thermal stability and hydrophobicity.

Originality/value

The modification of poly (VAc-VeoVa10) by reactive surfactant and fluorinated monomer is seldom reported. In this study, the fluorinated poly (VAC-VeoVa) latex is prepared via the reactive surfactants, which VAc and VeoVa10 is used as the main monomers and hexafluorobutyl methacrylate is used as the functional monomer. Potassium persulfate (KPS) and allyl nonyl phenoxy propyl alcohol polyoxyethylene ether ammonium sulfate are used as the initiator and emulsifier, respectively.

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to describe the association between sedentary time and social engagement among older adults living in megacities in India.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in New Delhi and Chennai were used for analysis. In the total sample (n = 528), 65% of older adults self-reported engaging in high (180 min/day) volumes of sedentary time. There were no associations between sedentary time and social engagement in older females.

Findings

Among older males, those reporting high levels of communicating or visiting with family and friends had lower odds of reporting 180 min/day of sedentary time (OR: 0.51, CI: 0.27–0.98) compared to those reporting low levels of this type of social engagement. Older males reporting high levels of participating in a club (OR: 2.27, CI: 1.19–4.3) or participating in religious activities (OR: 1.97, 1.01–3.85) were approximately two times more likely to report 180 min/day sedentary time compared to those reporting low levels of these types of social engagement.

Originality/value

These data suggest that the type of social activity appears to significantly affect self-reported sedentary time among older males, but not females. These findings have implications for interventions aimed at improving active aging among older adults living in megacities in India.

Purpose

We highlight three approaches for structuring data analysis to aid leadership educators and researchers in investigating differences between populations, considering the variable of age.

Design/methodology/approach

Utilizing real data, we exemplify the three approaches to illustrate how insights might be gained.

Findings

We offer illustrative empirical findings in this reflective essay to demonstrate the three approaches. Our empirical examples are real, but not designed to be the purpose of this essay.

Research limitations/implications

We provide three methodological approaches to analyzing leadership data that can assist leadership educators and researchers in determining an appropriate method for meaning-making with their data.

Originality/value

We seek to describe three different approaches to data analysis that are likely accessible and convenient as well as could lead to insight for leadership educators and researchers.

Findings

Victoria shared stories from her life, and how her experiences have shaped her life and herself.

Research limitations/implications

Narratives such as this give us an overview of only a single person’s experiences. However, they allow the person with lived experience to explore their story in depth.

Practical implications

What Victoria has written will give readers an insight into her life and experiences.

Social implications

There is so much to learn from a story like Victoria’s, especially in her approach to creativity.

Originality/value

This is Victoria’s own unique story. The value of this is apparent upon reading it.

Abstract

Purpose

This column aims to explore how AI is being used to impact books and help them understand how it may develop in the near future. Exploring these possibilities will help information professionals better understand the ways in which this technology is already being developed to impact books, a technology near and dear to many libraries.

Design/methodology/approach

This column discusses a series of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that are being used to change what books are. They include AI that adds context with the help of experts, AI that leverages the content of the book itself to create an interactive persona, and AI that makes books multi-modal either by adding narration and likely someday visuals inspired by the text.

Findings

Many of these transformations do not require breakthroughs in AI technology. Rather, they only require the application of existing technologies, layering on new interfaces and frameworks.

Originality/value

As a book evolves, libraries, who know their patrons’ needs, have expertise and often operate within ethical frameworks, have an opportunity to participate in the process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purposes of this paper are optimization of high speed reducer in electric vehicles based on the analysis of lubrication and verification of simulation accuracy and optimization results.

Design/methodology/approach

The traditional CFD method presents poor applicability to complex geometric problems due to grid deformity. Therefore, moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method is applied in this study to simulate lubrication of the reducer and analyze the influence of input speed and lubrication system design on the distribution. According to the results, the reducer is optimized. Meanwhile, the experiments for lubrication and churning power loss is carried out to verify the accuracy of simulation and optimization effects.

Findings

The flow field of lubricant inside the reducer is obtained. The lubrication system of reducer needs to be improved. Simulation and experiment show that the optimization is sufficient and efficient.

Originality/value

According to the simulation of lubrication, the reducer is optimized. The lubrication experimental setup is established. The conclusion of paper can provide the method and tool for reducer in electric vehicle.

Abstract

Purpose

Healthcare has undergone multiple phases in gaining understanding, accepting and implementing quality and safety, with the last 3 decades being crucial and decisive in making progress. During that time, safety has always been quoted along with quality, but the cost of error in healthcare (both in human lives and monetary cost) has been continuing to rise.

Design/methodology/approach

This article discusses the authors’ expert perspective in comparison to the industry’s research and practice outputs.

Findings

Healthcare has not yet defined quality and safety. This is allowing the misconception that already established quality management systems (QMSs) are fit for safety purposes as well. Even though aviation has acted as a paradigm for healthcare, further alignment in embedding safety management systems (SMS) has yet to be realised.

Originality/value

In this paper, the distinct nature of safety and its detachment of quality is being discussed, along with the need for clear and safety specific processes. Setting common language is the first step in establishing appropriate safety processes within SMSs, operating in tandem with QMSs, to promote patient safety successfully.

Abstract

Purpose

Competitive examinations, especially in a country like India, are important in deciding careers and access to prestigious institutions. Each year thousands of youth appear for different national and state level examinations, the competition for which becomes progressively tougher. Hence, it is important to study the mental health of youth appearing for competitive examinations. Nagaland, with an unemployment rate of 19.3%, is among the states with the highest unemployment rate in India. Therefore, this paper aims to study Naga youth with special focus on three aspects, namely, the status of mental health, to examine locus of control and to examine the correlation between mental health and locus of control.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was conducted in Kohima town and Dimapur town respectively with a sample comprising of 196 youth. The participants were in the age range of 15–35 years. The tools used included the Rotter’s Locus of Control Scale, Mental Health Continuum (Short-form) and a demographic questionnaire.

Findings

A considerable proportion of the participants (36%) were found in flourishing category whereas majority of the participants were either moderately healthy (46%) or languishing (17%). Age and employment status were found to have a significant relationship with mental health whereas gender was found to have a significant relationship with locus of control. Pearson chi-square showed a significant association between mental health and locus of control.

Originality/value

The present study used the mental health continuum model and locus of control to give a comprehensive view of mental health and the perceived control among Naga youth appearing competitive examinations.

Abstract

Purpose

The layer section of laser additive manufacturing (AM) can be rasterized. Subsequently, the rasterized layer section can be converted into sparse matrix. However, large storage space is occupied due to the high manufacturing resolution. In order to reduce the storage space, the purpose of this research is to propose a lossless compression method to compress the sparse matrix.

Design/methodology/approach

A lossless compression method for additive manufacturing is proposed. According to manifold and irregularity feature of the object of laser AM, a lossless compression method called continuous rows compressed storage (CRCS) based on continuous rows is innovatively proposed. In particular, the better direction strategy of compression method is selected based on the side-projected area per layer.

Findings

Take human teeth as an example, compared with compressed sparse row (CSR), the CRCS has advantage up to 98.88% in storage space. Compared with block compressed sparse row (BCSR), the CRCS has advantage up to 60.04% in storage space.

Originality/value

The proposed CRCS could be employed to compress the sparse matrixes of rasterized layer sections of laser AM. Compared with common lossless compression method of sparse matrix, the compression ratio of CRCS is greater. CRCS is propitious to reduce the storage space usage, thereby improving transmission efficiency.
