Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore both the drivers (performance expectancy and perceived usefulness of ChatGPT) and the barrier (effort expectancy) that Indonesian youth encounter when adopting generative AI technology, such as ChatGPT, as they pursue digital entrepreneurship.

Design/methodology/approach

This study utilizes Hayes' Process Model to evaluate the proposed hypotheses through survey data collected from 518 Indonesian youth.

Findings

This study's findings highlight a paradoxical relationship that emerges when effort expectancy intersects with performance expectancy and perceived usefulness of ChatGPT. Specifically, we discovered that when young individuals perceive the adoption of generative AI technology as requiring significant effort, their motivation to engage in digital entrepreneurship is significantly enhanced if they also view the tool as highly useful and beneficial to their future business endeavors.

Practical implications

The findings provide valuable insights for educators and policymakers focused on advancing digital entrepreneurship in developing nations through the integration of generative AI technology.

Originality/value

Our study enriches an underexplored niche within the field of entrepreneurship by examining the intersection of Indonesian youth, generative AI technology and digital entrepreneurship. By incorporating the Expectancy-Value Theory, it brings a fresh perspective to the study of paradoxical relationships in contemporary research in this domain.

Abstract

Purpose

The advent of ChatGPT has fundamentally changed the way people approach and access information. While we are encouraged to embrace the tool for its various benefits, it is yet to be known how to drive people to adopt this technology, especially to improve their life skills. Using implicit self-theories, the current research delineated the distinct way incremental (vs entity) theorists use ChatGPT, which in turn influences their attitude and hence the behavioural intention towards this technology.

Design/methodology/approach

The research employed a between-subject experimental design with 100 prolific participants. The manipulation materials were also pre-tested (N = 50). No confound effects such as content clarity, personal interest, and cognitive load were found. For the mediating effect, PROCESS Model 4 with bootstraps 5,000 and CI 95% were employed.

Findings

Individuals who believed that human ability to use technological applications was malleable, i.e. incremental theorists, were more likely to use ChatGPT to improve their life skills. On the other hand, when people believed that such an ability was fixed, i.e. entity theorist, they were less likely to use this new technology. The reason was that through the implicit belief, attitude towards ChatGPT was (more vs less) positively influenced which in turn motivated the behavioural intention. Further, the effect held beyond the impact of demographic factors such as age, gender, occupation, and educational level.

Originality/value

Even though implicit self-theories have received tremendous interest and empirical support, be it generic or domain-specific, the effect of implicit belief in technological applications was not clearly determined. The current research helps to extend the implicit self-theories into the technological domain, and in this case, the usage of ChatGPT. Moreover, the full mediating effect of attitude offers some thought about the revised models of technology acceptance. That is, perhaps it is the combination of (implicit) belief and attitude that may have better predictive power for technological adoption behaviour.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital innovation requires organizations to reconfigure their information technology infrastructure (ITI) to cultivate creativity and implement fast experimentation. This research inquiries into ITI generativity, an emerging concept demoting a critical ITI capability for organizational digital innovation. More specifically, it conceptualizes ITI generativity across two dimensions—namely, systems and applications infrastructure (SAI) generativity and data analytics infrastructure (DAI) generativity—and examines their respective social and technical antecedents and their impact on digital innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

This research formulates a theoretical model to investigate the social and technical antecedents along with innovation outcomes of ITI generativity. To test this model and its associated hypotheses, a survey was administered to IT professionals possessing knowledge of their organization's IT architecture and digital innovation performance. The dataset, comprising responses from 140 organizations, was analyzed using the partial least squares technique.

Findings

Results reveal that both dimensions of ITI generativity contribute to digital innovation performance, with the effect of DAI generativity being more pronounced. In addition, SAI and DAI generativities are driven by social and technical factors within an organization. More specifically, SAI generativity is positively associated with the usage of a digital application services platform and IT human resources, whereas DAI generativity is positively linked to the usage of a data analytics services platform, data analytics services usability and data analytics human resources.

Originality/value

This research contributes to the literature on digital innovation by introducing ITI generativity as a crucial ITI capability and deciphering its role in digital innovation. It also offers useful insights and guidance for practitioners on how to build ITIs to achieve better digital innovation performance.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the value of cloud computing adoption (CCA) as a proxy for information technology (IT) flexibility (ITF) and IT effectiveness (ITE) among Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Jordan.

Design/methodology/approach

A research framework with five hypotheses has been developed based on the results of previous studies. Partial least squares-structural equation modeling has been used for data analysis.

Findings

The results revealed that elements of ITF in two domains, IT technical resource (connectivity, modularityand compatibility) and IT human resource (IT personnel skills) specific to CCA, were significantly correlated with ITE.

Research limitations/implications

The findings have crucial implications: they contribute to the research community, administrators and cloud computing providers (CSPs) concerning the framework-improved procedure for CCA. The proposed model can enhance the awareness of service providers about why some SMEs accept cloud computing services, whereas actually the same ones having the same type of business do not. In addition, the above providers should enhance their interaction with the SMEs that contributed to the cloud computing knowledge to make a well-organized setting for the CCA, specifically, SMEs need that adopt an on-premise private cloud architecture. Moreover, necessary to determine the challenges in deploying solutions from the perspective of CSPs. The sample has been limited to Jordan respondents.

Practical implications

The research studies about the usage of cloud computing have shown its effects on SMEs today. Also, the different impacts of cloud computing on other sectors are at the center of attention. SMEs could get significant advantages by carefully considering and managing CCA from the ITF and ITE perspective.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first study to develop a framework for CCA based on the standpoint of ITF in two domains, IT technical resources (connectivity, modularity and compatibility) and IT human resources (IT personnel skills) and effectiveness.
