Abstract

Purpose

The technological disruption from artificial intelligence (AI) within the economy requires intelligent property professionals for tomorrow. This paper proposes that the direction of interaction between AI and tomorrow's property professional, the property graduate, should be AI-empowered rather than AI-directed.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper reflects on the growing influence of AI in property combined with literature on technological adoption in the workplace. It proposes a way forward in navigating future decision-making.

Findings

An AI-empowered paradigm promotes the importance of industry-specific knowledge to determine factual information in decision-making. In contrast, an AI-directed paradigm leads to over-dominance of the user on pre-specified knowledge available through AI tools that could lead to AI-directed output that carries significant risk for the property industry.

Practical implications

Navigating the future requires a paradigm that moves from a computational focus driven predominantly by technological tools to one where tomorrow's professionals have a cognitive focus that leads to AI-enabled property graduates that can apply the correct tools in the right circumstances.

Originality/value

This paper reflects on the increasing role that technology and AI have within the property profession and brings to light the importance of learning through experience and the transparent use of AI tools in property.

Abstract

New technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), have helped us begin to take our first steps off Earth and into outer space. But conflicts inevitably will arise and, in the absence of settled governance, may be resolved by force, as is typical for new frontiers. But the terrestrial assumptions behind the ethics of war will need to be rethought when the context radically changes, and both the environment of space and the advent of robotic warfighters with superhuman capabilities will constitute such a radical change. This essay examines how new autonomous technologies, especially dual-use technologies, and the challenges to human existence in space will force us to rethink the ethics of war, both from space to Earth, and in space itself.

Abstract

Smart scenarios related to industries or cities, characterized by intensive technology transfer and use of innovative and disruptive technologies, have been in the spotlight either on academic or organizational discussions, especially those with a technocentric focus. Among these technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) emerges as the most challenging one due to its complexity. Therefore, this chapter aims to address AI, in particular the future of the labor market, exploring the challenges regarding the skills required in the context of AI technology, addressing its uses, challenges, and benefits. In order to achieve this goal, a systematic review was conducted on the extant literature using the methodology Methodi Ordinatio. The results show that the current literature is gradually changing from a more critical and negative view of AI to a more optimistic one, with more positive approaches and expectations regarding its benefits. As practical implications, the findings can be used as a guide for governments to develop strategies aiming to deal with upcoming challenges, especially regarding future jobs and employability.

Abstract

Purpose

With the emergence of digital twins, the construction industry is looking toward improving the inspection and maintenance of all kinds of assets, such as bridges, roads and utilities. The purpose of this paper is to provide insights into how the development of an interactive digital twin creates a variety of interactions between users of this technology and assets to be monitored.

Design/methodology/approach

The development of a digital twin inspection model, focusing on the specific case of a sewage pumping station, is chosen as the subject of a case study. Through the development of this model, this study explores the various user–technology interactions that can be designed in a digital twin context.

Findings

Users interact with digital twins by following virtual instructions in a certain way, which creates a “quasi-other” relationship. A digital twin based on virtual reality (VR) also make users feel as if they are within the created VR of an inspection site, thereby immersing them in the VR environment. The design of a VR-based digital twin, which is determined by decisions made during the development process, shapes the context in which users interact with the technology and assets.

Originality/value

This study shows that a digital twin in construction practice may play different “actant” roles having different types of influences. Analyzing these actant roles and influences in terms of force and visibility adds a new perspective on the interaction between users and digital twins in construction and asset monitoring practice.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review the extant hospitality and tourism literature on the state of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) in the service industry. The aim was to highlight the current areas of research on this emerging topic and identify areas for future application and study.

Design/methodology/approach

A list of hospitality and tourism journals was used to identify articles related to AI and robotics using the terms AI, robots, robotics, hospitality and tourism, and several combinations thereof. Additional sources were identified through the literature reviews from the identified works.

Findings

The findings revealed several studies on the current state of robotics and AI in hospitality and tourism. Additional research examines and discusses implications for internal and external customer service, legal and ethical issues and theory.

Originality/value

This paper provides a compilation of the current studies that examine the impact of robotics and AI in hospitality and tourism. It offers scholars an overview of the current knowledge in the field on this rapidly emerging and evolving topic.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the paper is to develop an algorithm based on fuzzy logic (FL) systems for reconstructing cracks shapes, which will be faster and simpler to learn than neural networks, especially in case of large training set.

Design/methodology/approach

The inverse model in defectoscopy can be considered as reverse model of the whole measurement process (crack‐sensor‐output). The most important disadvantage of the inverse neural models with dynamic networks is that the performance of training is disappointing due to large training set and many inputs of such networks. The paper proposes the FL as the substitute of neural network. The typical ANFIS networks are sufficient only for simulating systems with small number of inputs. For this reason the paper developed the learning algorithm that produces relatively small number of rules and it can be used in case of systems with hundred of inputs and thousands of training pairs.

Findings

This paper provides details about algorithm for reconstructing cracks profiles that produces relatively small number of rules of the fuzzy system. The basis rule of inverse model with moving window for one‐ and multi‐frequency method is described. The results of profile identification in 2D and 3D space for real and simulated data are presented as well.

Originality/value

Generally, the algorithm proposed in this paper can be widely used for simulating multi‐input systems, which are described by a large training set.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the mediating role of knowledge process capability (KPC) between ethical leadership (EL) and administrative innovation (AI) in the banking sector of Ethiopia.

Design/methodology/approach

The study was conducted by a standardized questionnaire survey to collect the data from 266 employees of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia in 93 branches. The study employed structural equation modeling approach with Analyzing Moment of Structures 23.0 to test the hypothesized mediation model.

Findings

The results of this investigation disclose that EL has a significant and direct effect on AI and KPC. KPC also influences AI significantly.

Originality/value

The study revealed that KPC plays a partial mediating role in linking EL to AI, which is a new contribution to the existing literature of EL. This dimension can provide new dimensions to design organizational leadership which is based on sustainability paradigm. This can strengthen the organizational capabilities aiming to increasing innovative behaviors in order to have a deep-seated strategy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this empirical paper is to explore for the first time, in a temporal sequence of events framework, how the various forms of justice (procedural, interactional and outcome) impact on customer satisfaction with service recovery.

Design/methodology/approach

Employing scenarios, an experimental design was employed with data collected from a student sample in an Eastern collectivist culture (Thailand).

Findings

The results reveal that affirmation of perceptions of all three forms of justice positively impact overall service recovery satisfaction. However, unlike previous models of recovery satisfaction, the findings presented here suggest a temporal sequence of events model involving the causal ordering of the three justice dimensions such that distributive justice mediates the relationship between procedural and interactional justice, and ultimate recovery satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

Based on the findings here, future studies using the three forms of justice should consider the temporal element and undertake longitudinal analysis.

Practical implications

The findings suggest that organizations should pay special attention to delivering high levels of interactional and procedural justice as they precede, and have an impact on, subsequent perceptions of outcome justice (i.e. compensation, re‐done work, etc.) in a service recovery situation.

Originality/value

This study adds to the knowledge on how firms can best recover from a service failure situation.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine two channels through which accounting standard differences could affect cross-listing: compliance costs and/or comparability benefits.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use two settings to disentangle the two channels. First, financial reporting requirements are more stringent for cross-listings via direct listings than cross-listings via depositary receipts; as a result, the effect of compliance costs (if any) would be manifested differently in the two venues of cross-listings. Second, some host countries allow foreign firms to report under International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) without mandating IFRS for domestic firms; compared to host countries that mandate IFRS for both domestic and foreign firms, these IFRS-permitting countries provide a setting to test the importance of comparability benefits while holding constant compliance costs.

Findings

The authors find that prior to IFRS adoption, direct listings decrease with accounting standards differences between two countries while depositary receipts increase with such differences, consistent with the costs of complying with host country’s accounting standards affecting firms’ cross-listing decisions. After the harmonization of accounting standards, the authors find that IFRS-mandating host countries gain cross-listings from other IFRS-mandating jurisdictions, while IFRS-permitting countries do not experience such gains. These combined results suggest that accounting related compliance costs and comparability benefits both influence cross-listing decisions.

Originality/value

The paper employs unique settings that enable an in-depth examination of the role of compliance costs vs that of comparability benefits on cross-listing decisions. The settings employed by the authors allow them to disentangle the two channels and provide an important insight that accounting standard-related compliance costs and comparability benefits both affect cross-listing decisions.
