Abstract
An autoethnographic account is given in order to depict the building of the author's musical subjectivity through the specific modes of cross-generational and peer-to-peer interaction involving material and emotional investments, discursive constraints, and transgressions. The event of discovering the “sound of silence” is brought in contrast to the more encoded experiences of classical music, especially operatic. Emotionally charged musical events and rituals are revisited (narrated) together with accounts of transgressing the boundaries of inherited musical environments and learned patterns of musical appreciation.

Abstract
Purpose
The magnetic characterization of electrical steel is typically examined by measurements under the condition of unidirectional sinusoidal flux density at different magnetization frequencies. A variety of iron loss models were developed and parametrized for these standardized unidirectional iron loss measurements. In the magnetic cross section of rotating electrical machines, the spatial magnetic flux density loci and with them the resulting iron losses vary significantly from these unidirectional cases. For a better recreation of the measured behavior extended iron loss models that consider the effects of rotational magnetization have to be developed and compared to the measured material behavior. The aim of this study is the adaptation, parametrization and validation of an iron loss model considering the spatial flux density loci is presented and validated with measurements of circular and elliptical magnetizations.
Design/methodology/approach
The proposed iron loss model allows the calculation and separation of the different iron loss components based on the measured iron loss for different spatial magnetization loci. The separation is performed in analogy to the conventional iron loss calculation approach designed for the recreation of the iron losses measured under unidirectional, one-dimensional measurements. The phenomenological behavior for rotating magnetization loci is considered by the formulation of the different iron loss components as a function of the maximum magnetic flux density Bm, axis ratio fAx, angle to the rolling direction (RD) θ and magnetization frequency f.
Findings
The proposed formulation for the calculation of rotating iron loss is able to recreate the complicated interdependencies between the different iron loss components and the respective spatial magnetic flux loci. The model can be easily implemented in the finite element analysis of rotating electrical machines, leading to good agreement between the theoretically expected behavior and the actual output of the iron loss calculation at different geometric locations in the magnetic cross section of rotating electrical machines.
Originality/value
Based on conventional one-dimensional iron loss separation approaches and previously performed extensions for rotational magnetization, the terms for the consideration of vectorial unidirectional, elliptical and circular flux density loci are adjusted and compared to the performed rotational measurement. The presented approach for the mathematical formulation of the iron loss model also allows the parametrization of the different iron loss components by unidirectional measurements performed in different directions to the RD on conventional one-dimensional measurement topologies such as the Epstein frames and single sheet testers.

Abstract
Purpose
Early career teachers (ECTs) of Color are key in making change, resisting racism and pushing back against white supremacy in K-12 education, specifically in English Language Arts (ELA) classrooms. Through a narrative telling inquiry (Clandinin and Connelly, 2000) of Nora, an Asian American ELA ECT in the Midwest, and by drawing on Fisher’s (2011) Critical Integral Pedagogy of Fearlessness, this study aims to recognize the narrative power within teaching praxis as Nora stories herself toward becoming a critical pedagogue.
Design/methodology/approach
Using narrative inquiry methodology and methods (Clandinin and Connelly, 2000), the authors simultaneously considered the commonplace tenets of narrative inquiry – temporality, sociality and place – of the intertwined relationships of the participants and observers. The field texts included in the corpus of data include myriad tellings of Nora’s experiences in her initial years of teaching ELA. Data were analyzed in stages of parsing out narrative blocks and structures.
Findings
The findings indicate that Nora, as an ECT, went through recursive cycles of fear as conceptualized by Fisher (2011) – bravery, courageousness and being fear-less – of working toward radical love (Hooks, 2000) within her ELA instruction. The authors argue that Nora confronted her personal and professional fears as she strove to become a critical pedagogue in her ELA classroom.
Originality/value
Current scholarship portrays ECTs as lacking agency in their development and/or effectiveness in the classroom and little is said about Asian American ELA ECTs and critical instruction. The authors present Nora’s counter-narrative to make visible what is right with ELA ECTs, specifically teachers of Color, as they transform their fear into courage to fight for educational equity.

This is an article about American academic fiction. By academic fiction, I mean novels whosemain characters are professors, college students, and those individuals associated with academia. Abstract
Supplemental Instructions (SIs) were introduced into the San Francisco State University College of Science & Engineering curriculum in 1999. The goal was to improve student performance and retention and to decrease the time to degree in STEM majors. While for the most part we followed the structure and activities as developed by the International Center for Supplemental Instruction at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, we discovered several variations that significantly improved our outcomes. First and foremost, we created SI courses that require attendance, which results in higher students’ performance outcomes compared to drop-in options. Second, at SFSU the SI courses are led by pairs of undergraduate student facilitators (who are all STEM majors) trained in active learning strategies. Each year, more than half of our facilitators return to teach for another year. Thus, each section has a returning “experienced” facilitator who works with a new “novice” facilitator. Third, the SI courses were created with a distinct course prefix and listed as courses that generate revenue and make data access available for comparison studies. Results are presented that compare SI impact by gender and with groups underrepresented in STEM disciplines.

Abstract
Purpose
Despite the increased level of national conflict around the world, outward foreign direct investment (FDI) targeting these areas has increased. This study aims to adopt a dynamic capability lens to examine the relationship between firm capabilities and the level of conflict in their FDI portfolio. The paper argues that conflict zones may be an attractive destination for a subset of firms, given their capability profile.
Design/methodology/approach
The authors draw from a sample of US Fortune 500 firms (2019) to examine their FDI destinations; specifically, they collected data on the locations of their foreign subsidiaries, which resulted into a final sample of 118 diversified US firms. The model was analyzed using ordinary least squares multiple regression to predict the extent to which their FDI portfolios have ongoing domestic and international conflict and the impact of expansion in such conflict-stricken markets on firm financial performance (ROA).
Findings
The authors find that firms with greater international geographical diversification capabilities, as depicted by their geographic spread, and those with greater local stock management capability, as depicted by their initial public offering maturity, are more likely to launch subsidiaries in high ongoing conflict zones. Furthermore, the authors find that while it may be unprofitable for firms to seek FDI in high-conflict zones, firms that operate in strategic industries (manufacturing, infrastructure, natural resource extraction) experienced positive performance. This can be attributed to the fact that firms operating in these sectors are more likely to directly profit in the reconstruction/rebuilding of such conflict-stricken markets.
Originality/value
While previous literature focused on macro-level factors, this study sought to highlight firm-level factors that determine FDI decision in conflict zones. The authors capture different dimensions/sources of firms’ dynamic capability, one resulting from foreign experience (i.e. geographic diversification) and the other from local experience (i.e. domestic stock management) to assess how each correlate with multinational corporations’ level of conflict in their FDI portfolio. Furthermore, the authors contribute to the understanding of the relationship between expansion in conflict zones and firm performance and highlight that industry does matter. Implications from this study highlight the importance of building risk management capabilities to handle not just expansion in conflict zones but also during challenging times like those brought about by pandemics.
