Abstract

Purpose

This study explored the relationship between employees' cognitive capabilities and firm performance by exploring the moderating role of decision-making style and the mediating effect of knowledge creation. Understanding the role of cognitive capabilities in value creation is crucial for human resource management to achieve the anticipated organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling, cognitive skills theory, cognitive skills acquisition theory and a knowledge creation framework were applied.

Findings

The first finding suggests that only A-shaped skills predict higher knowledge creation, while T-shaped skills do not. Second, knowledge creation predicts higher financial performance and a lower level of financial uncertainty. Third, T-shaped skills have no indirect effect on financial performance or financial uncertainty. Fourth, A-shaped skills exerted significant indirect effects on financial performance and uncertainty. Fifth, the rational decision-making style did not moderate the link between knowledge creation and financial performance, as opposed to the intuitive decision-making style.

Originality/value

A review of existing research indicates a lack of studies examining the effect of cognitive skills on organizational outcomes and contingencies under which cognitive skills lead to superior outcomes. This study advances research on T-shaped and A-shaped skills and knowledge creation by empirically exploring their interrelationships with financial performance. Managerial implications and suggestions for future research are also highlighted.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to investigate the impact of servant leadership on knowledge management and its subsequent connection to cost-saving innovation. The study further explored these relationships by examining the mediating roles of innovation capabilities and technological volatility.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is applied in purpose and employs a descriptive-survey method for data collection. It follows a qualitative-quantitative approach, utilizing expert interviews in the qualitative phase. The sample consists of 35 managers and expert professors with knowledge management experience in universities and high-tech industries, selected through the snowball method. Data collected from Iranian organizations were analyzed using AMOS software.

Findings

The results revealed a positive correlation between servant leadership and knowledge management. Knowledge management demonstrated a significant positive relationship with cost-saving innovation. Additionally, technological volatility and innovation capabilities were identified as crucial factors influencing the connection between knowledge management and innovation, particularly in promoting frugality.

Originality/value

While this research provides a comprehensive model, it acknowledges specific limitations that warrant further investigation. The study predominantly focused on Iranian organizations, suggesting an opportunity to broaden its scope to include diverse organizational perspectives from various cultural and geographical contexts. Moreover, a promising avenue for future research involves exploring entrepreneurial orientation as a potential mediating variable. Given its significant impact on organizational dynamics, introducing entrepreneurial orientation could enhance our understanding of its effects on both knowledge management and the promotion of frugal innovation. This expansion may illuminate the intricate interplay between entrepreneurial orientation, knowledge processes and innovative practices, contributing to a more sophisticated discussion on effective organizational strategies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the perception of successful entrepreneurs and resource providers regarding the minimum operational time necessary to legitimize an enterprise as an established company, as well as the tactics used by the entrepreneurs to minimize the distrust of society during this initial period of the life cycle of the organization.

Design/methodology/approach

Data collection from two groups: (i) interviews with 62 entrepreneurs and founders of established companies; and (ii) a questionnaire completed by 77 sales managers of companies that provide businesses with resources (they practice business-to-business). Regarding analyses: (i) to analyze information, this study applied the content analysis technique; and (ii) for data, this study applied the one-sample t-test, mean comparison t-test, Pearson’s correlation test, chi-square test of association, Mann–Whitney U test and correspondence analysis technique.

Findings

In this study, a period of 42 months was identified for the legitimization of enterprises by society, in other words, the time necessary for enterprises to be recognized as an established company and a company of low risk by customers and resource providers. A set of managerial and behavioral actions practiced by successful entrepreneurs to face the difficulties they experience during the legitimization period was also identified.

Practical implications

In addition to establishing a period of 42 months for the legitimization of an enterprise in the eyes of society, a set of 15 strategies used by successful entrepreneurs was identified to combat the prejudice associated with the youthfulness of their companies. Of these, 12 are linked to managerial actions and 3 to the entrepreneur’s behavior. It should be highlighted that eight of these strategies are innovative and have yet to be addressed in the literature on mitigating risks associated with the liability of newness principle.

Originality/value

The authors discuss the legitimization of enterprises based on the perception of actors who play a fundamental role regarding entrepreneurial action: resource providers for companies, customers and successful entrepreneurs. This is a triangulation of sources, as well as a triangulation of collected data and qualitative and quantitative techniques, which sought to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information that resulted from this analytical process.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the impact of organizational culture of medical institutions on employee motivation and professional burnout, with occupation (i.e. doctor, nurse and administration employee) being a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative method (survey) was used for this study in Lithuania (EU), with a sum of 235 fulfilled questionnaires being obtained online. IBM SPSS software was used for statistical analysis and testing hypotheses.

Findings

The research results reveal that organizational culture is significantly related to both employee motivation and professional burnout in Lithuanian medical institutions. Moreover, theoretical and executive implications highlight the requisite role of and manner in which organizational culture and employee motivation can reduce employee turnover, retain talent, limit employee burnout and overall strengthen the design and implementation of long-term human resource management planning.

Social implications

This research delineates, explicates and directs crucial aspects of medical institutions’ effective functioning, a concern of even the most developed nations, as health sector performance, individually, organizationally and collectively, is a natural principal factor of social well-being and health.

Originality/value

Further and unique to the extant research, the authors analyzed specific organizational interactions, which revealed different statistical relationships between organizational culture and doctors’, nurses’ and administration employees’ overload, lack of development and neglect. The authors, thus, identified that organizational culture does not have a statistically significant impact on neglect of doctors, nurses and administration employees; however, it does significantly influence overload and lack of development in all respondents’ groups.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the everyday life information seeking behavior of transgender people in Pakistan.

Design/methodology/approach

A quantitative study, based on a survey design, was conducted to explore the everyday information needs of transgender people along with the types and frequency of using information sources. This study further explored the barriers to seeking everyday life information. Data were collected from 378 transgender people from Pakistan.

Findings

Music related information was the most important daily life information need and television appeared as one of the primary information sources frequently consulted by the transgender people. The respondents revealed a variety of challenges in accessing information including lack of education, lack of understanding about available information sources, biased treatment by the public and lack of technological skills. Furthermore, a statistically significant difference was found in everyday information needs and sources consulted on the basis of their age and education.

Originality/value

The findings provide a guideline to educate information providers, government agencies and other stakeholders about the information needs of this marginalized community in Pakistan. This study also suggests ways in which stakeholder may improve information systems and services to better assist transgender people.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the effects of transformational leadership on learning organization and nurses' innovative behavior. Furthermore, this study aims to explore the mediating role of learning organization in the relationship between transformational leadership and nurse innovative behavior in the healthcare context. As there is a paucity of research examining these relationships, this study bridges the research gaps in the literature.

Design/methodology/approach

A cross-sectional survey was used. Using convenience sampling, the data of 228 nurses from 5 public hospitals in Vietnam were collected via questionnaires. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to empirically test the hypotheses.

Findings

The findings show significant positive effects of transformational leadership on learning organization and nurses’ innovative behavior. Furthermore, a significant positive relationship between learning organization and nurses’ innovative behavior was also supported. Finally, the partial mediating role of learning organization is significant in this study.

Originality/value

To the best of the author's knowledge, this article is the first of its kind to identify the minimal literature available on the impact of transformational leadership on learning organization and nurses’ innovative behavior. This article also contributes to extending knowledge about the mediating role of learning organization in the healthcare context. Highlighting the importance of transformational leadership, the findings offer guidance for healthcare organizations that aim to strengthen nurses’ innovative behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore the associations between leadership styles (i.e. transformational and ethical) and innovative work behavior within higher education institutions (HEIs), additionally investigating the mediating role of work engagement and the moderating role of psychological empowerment.

Design/methodology/approach

The basis of this study rested upon adopting a cross-sectional research framework. The data were acquired from a sample comprising 825 academic staff and 275 leaders across 226 HEIs in China. Employing a quantitative methodology, the researchers used AMOS version 26.0 and SPSS version 22.0 for statistical analysis.

Findings

The results indicated that leadership styles (i.e. transformational and ethical) positively affected innovative work behavior, both directly and indirectly (via work engagement). Also, psychological empowerment moderated the linkage between leadership styles and innovative work behavior but not the association between work engagement and innovative work behavior.

Originality/value

Despite some existing literature having discussed the correlation between leadership styles and innovative work behavior, there appears to be a conspicuous dearth of research endeavoring to explore the mediator (i.e. work engagement) and the moderator (i.e. psychological empowerment) within the above nexus, especially in the context of HEIs. Thus, this study can be considered original, introducing novel perspectives and substantial contributions to the management literature on HEIs. In addition, it offers insights for organizational managers.

Abstract

Purpose

Many pregnant and post-natal women do not meet physical activity (PA) guidelines. One barrier to PA for these women is finding suitable sports bras because of the numerous changes the breasts undergo. This study aims to assess current maternity/nursing sports bras in terms of purchasing activity, likes and limitations of products and determine the essential characteristics and features required for future product developments.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed-methods deductive sequential approach was taken using an online questionnaire and in-person focus group interviews. A total of 308 participants who were pregnant, had given birth within the last 12 months or were nursing at the time of data collection completed the questionnaire, and 13 participants also took part in focus group interviews.

Findings

Only 15% of maternity/nursing sports bra purchasers found exactly what they wanted with most problems relating to support, design and fit. Support and comfort were the most important characteristics with 94% and 98% of participants rating them as very important or absolutely essential. Easy nursing access, adjustability, product longevity and value and availability, in terms of where products can be purchased and sizing range, must also be considered for future products to meet user groups’ needs and reduce barriers to PA.

Originality/value

This study investigates the requirements and preferences of maternity/nursing sports bras for both pregnant and post-natal women, including an assessment of a range of commercially available products. These findings provide important implications for future product developments.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study uses dynamic capabilities and micro foundations theory to unearth the emergence of multilevel innovation in service sector organizations. Transformational leadership (TL) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) are proposed as human resource (HR) based antecedents. The study also aims to reveal the role of collective organizational engagement (COE) as a mediator in developing dynamic capabilities and contingent pay policy (CPP) as a moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is a multilevel study where employees are nested within organizations. We used multilevel modeling in Mplus V. 8.7 to perform the analyses.

Findings

Results of multilevel structural equation modeling revealed that TL, CSR, and COE are vital microfoundations through which innovation emerges in an organization. COE acts as a partial mediator in the relationship between CSR and innovation. The level of CPP in organizations moderates these relationships at the employee level rather than at the firm level.

Originality/value

This research is one of the few multilevel and multisource studies to empirically test the impact of HR-based antecedents on innovative work behavior and firm innovativeness simultaneously. It also contributes to engagement literature by furthering an understanding of the nascent concept of COE.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to distinguish how unabsorbed and absorbed slack affects market and financial performance via proactive and reactive supply chain resilience (SCRES), particularly under varying conditions of organizational ambidexterity.

Design/methodology/approach

By collecting survey data from 277 Chinese manufacturers, we verify the conceptual model applying structural equation modeling.

Findings

Proactive SCRES mediates the positive impacts of both unabsorbed and absorbed slack on market and financial performance, whereas reactive SCRES mediates only their positive effects on financial performance. High levels of organizational ambidexterity strengthen the indirect effects of both types of slack on market and financial performance via proactive SCRES, but not when mediated by reactive SCRES.

Originality/value

We introduce a new theoretical perspective to view fits (as mediation) between the use of unabsorbed/absorbed slack in different ways when switching attentions to proactive or reactive SCRES, both of which can be improved through organizational ambidexterity. This study offers novel insights into how managers can switch attentions between proactive and reactive SCRES knowing when to appropriately use unabsorbed/absorbed slack for which purposes, and the use of different learning modes (explorative vs exploitative).
