As a further measure for improving the use of chlorinated solvents, Elf Atochem has developed a functional container for solvents which it claims affords improved safety during transport, storage and use by preventing all leaks and emissions. Following successful trials in Germany and Switzerland for the past year and marketing in France since the beginning of 1998, this container is now available on the UK market as the Eco-Per® container.

A traditional drum containing the solvent is placed inside a double-skin container acting as a true mobile spillage trough. The galvanised steel container is fitted with a tight seal and a fast-locking system which prevents any mechanical damage in case of impact or overturning. The transport, storage and handling of this container, we are informed, involves no risks of accidental contamination, and complies fully with the most stringent European regulations, including the future directive on VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds).

Designed to ensure emission-free transfers into and out of equipment, the container is reported to have a leakproof connection to machines through instant drip-proof cut-off caps and a gas return device. Filling takes place using the container's integral pump. Discharge is controlled by a float level. In order to prevent any error during handling, the system allows for clear differentiation between containers of new product or containers designed for spent product earmarked for recycling. Both types of containers are shuttle containers.

According to Elf Atochem the functional Eco-Per® container therefore represents an optimum technical choice for guaranteed leakproof transport, storage and transfer operations (filling and discharge of machines), hence:

  enhanced protection of operators who run no risk of accidental contamination or exposure to solvent vapours during handling;

  optimum sealed circuits of chlorinated solvents in terms of equipment and at the beginning and end of cycles.
