The Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) was founded in 1970 by Xerox Corporation to define the “Office of the Future”. Developing technologies including laser printing, the Ethernet, the graphical user interface, and ubiquitous computing, PARC now conducts pioneering interdisciplinary research in physical, computational, and social sciences. One of their research aims is to design, build and control hundreds of degrees of freedom in modular and self-reconfigurable machines ( http://www2.parc.com/spl/projects/modrobots). They are developing massively distributed control for tightly coupled uniform modules with sensing and actuating functions. The objective is to develop novel electromechanical system design principles that achieve extreme versatility and robustness of hardware and software systems to improve future product offerings.

This is a superb Web site, containing an abundance project information, pictures and movies.
