This is aimed at students – on advanced undergraduate or MBA courses – but serves as a useful introduction to practitioners. This book brings together the strategic role of the supply chain, key strategic drivers of supply chain performance, and the underlying tools and techniques for supply chain analysis.

The student‐focus and practical nature are shown by extensive use of Excel to illustrate methodologies for network design, demand and supply planning, inventory management, and transportation management. Excel has been used and explained in a way that should allow students to easily implement these models for themselves.

There are numerous exercises supporting each chapter and, for this revised edition, many of these are new. The intention is that students will solve some in class but have some left over for “homework”.

Identification of key supply chain metrics (related to each supply chain driver) is followed by a discussion in the rest of the text. This supports the student understanding of how best to judge supply chain performance and use this as the basis for positive change.

This is a comprehensive book – and it is about supply chains and not just logistics. However, some of the material will be scanned quickly by many readers … especially, perhaps, some of the mathematical modelling. This comprehensiveness – and the assumption of mathematical knowledge – means that this is a book that requires prior consideration of the underpinnings. It is not for the casual reader who wants only the main concepts explained … this is for those who need to know the detail, and are prepared to put the effort in to understand.
