Learning laboratory: social entrepreneurship offers innovative cost-effective development solutions

Article Type: Abstracts From: Development and Learning in Organizations, Volume 27, Issue 3

Dees J.G.Finance & Development, December 2012, Vol. 49 No. 4, Start page: 14, No. of pages: 4

Offers examples to show how social entrepreneurs are working to address problems common in developing countries, such as HIV/AIDS, youth unemployment, and lack of reliable electricity, where their wide scope of activities covers microfinance, sustainable forestry, water purification, sanitation, agricultural productivity, women’s employment, education, and health care. Explains that sometimes their work is effective, and sometimes it is not, but success often depends on credibility and relationships with major players, notably government agencies, prominent foundations, multilateral development organizations, large established non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and corporations. Argues that social entrepreneurs bring private resources, ingenuity, determination, business skills, and, in some cases, deep local knowledge to the problems that hold societies back, while innovating, testing, and refining new approaches. Includes the account in a special issue partly devoted to the theme: “Philanthropy: catalysts for change”.ISSN: 0145-1707Article type: ViewpointReference: 42AC128 (Permanent URL)
