Purpose – Brings together a panel of experts to discuss the future of virtual worlds learning – the training platform whereby learners become “avatars” in a 3D computer animated world. Design/methodology/approach – Considers it important not to focus on technology and to see virtual worlds not as a replacement for other techniques but complementary to them. Considers that virtual worlds goes beyond role-play and provides the opportunity to build realistic training scenarios, noting its use by companies like Shell and BP to test people’s reactions to dangerous situations. Looks at how virtual worlds learning encourages peer support and communication between people who would never otherwise meet. Stresses that there is a range of virtual worlds which will match different individual and organisational needs. Findings – Considers that organisations need to experiment with virtual worlds to identify its benefits. Originality/value – Discusses one of the latest types of electronic learning.
