Purpose – to look at how scenario planning can help aid decision making. Design/methodology/approach – puts forward how by adopting scenario planning, different options can be explored and strategies assessed; describes the “traditional” view of the scenario process and presents two case studies of how scenarios can be used for the development of younger professionals. Compares the adoption of scenario planning at ICl and at a large local government authority; highlights how the scenario setting enabled the organization to develop insights into the threats and opportunities that can impact on an organization. Originality/value – provides examples of how scenario setting was used in two organizations focused on the development of “high flyers”.ISSN: 1350-6269
