Abstract

Discusses the responsibility of the librarian to maintain and protect the library’s building and contents as well as its collection. Without the proper amount of property insurance, the head librarian may be held professionally liable for any damages not covered by the library’s property insurance in the event of a loss. To combat this problem, more and more librarians today are relying on the insurance appraisal as a critical tool in planning for and recovering from a crisis. Also covered is what to look for in purchasing an appraisal and how to choose a qualified, reputable firm. Includes a sample library appraisal for reference.
